Here is the issue my ds 14 will be going to high school this up coming school year (wow the time really flies:sad2:) We normally take the kids out of school for our family vacations (please no flames, :teacher:school is of utmost importance to my family and my kids have great grades, but family time is also precious and fleeting) he is only allowed to miss 9 days for the entire year or it will effect his grades, as they will penalize him by taking %'s away. We don't like to travel with all the crowds:scared1: Yikes what are we going to do?:scared: We thought about Thanksgiving any thought or end of August? Help!:rotfl:thnks Netii:goodvibes

I think I would choose Thanksgiving. Yes, it WILL be crowded though! Late Aug is when teachers are just getting their rythem going and the kids are finally understanding what is expected of them for the year (or semester, however your school works it out.)

Here Thanksgiving break is 3 days, so you would only miss 2, and as a high school teacher, I can tell you that those 2 days are crazy with the kids and teacher so hyped about the break that not much gets done anyway.

That is my .02 anyway.

Did you talk with the principle? In our school vacations count as follows first two days count then every other day counts after that. That is if you fill out the proper paperwork and get it excused. Do they allow for pre-approved excused vacations? 9 days the entire year seems harsh!

I am also a high school teacher, and we go at thanksgiving b/c i just can't tolerate the heat in summer due to a medical condition. This is the absolute best time I have found to take off from school if you are gonig to do it. Missing a whole week in High school can often be a disaster, but a couple of days is fixable. We leave the Wed. before thanksgiving and come back the Tue. after so I only miss 2 days. It is much less crowded after than before.
I would suggest going at thanksgiving to minimize time out of school.

Our school does not start back untill Septemper 8th, so in Aug he would not miss any school. The heat would be that BAD?!?

We live in NH and have gone in August several times. I honestly didn't think the heat/humidity was all that much worse than it was at home. I made sure we all stayed hydrated and we did take a mid-afternoon break each day. What I found worked best for us was to get up early, get to the parks and stay until about 1 pm. We then had lunch and went back to the resort for swim/rest and then went back around 4-5 pm and stayed until the parks closed. We also take advantage of the airconditioned shops, restaurants and rides. I also think late August will be much less busy than Thanksgiving. Also, if you go in August you may get free dining:cool1:.
