Has anyone attended the Thanksgiving Day meal at the DLH Grand Ballroom recently? I know it's a bit pricey, but the menu from years past looks great. What are your thoughts on the meal itself? Were the character M&Gs spread throughout at various locations, or did they all rotate at one greeting spot? What characters have everyone seen at the meal? TIA.

From the Disneyland at Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread.....

In this post -- http://www.disboards.com/threads/di...untdown-2015-has-begun.3358217/#post-52730335 -- look under the November 2014 category. Specifically go to cseca's review, dolphingirl47's review and Orbitron's review. I think there might be one or two other Thanksgiving Feast reviews linked there as well. Those are all very detailed and helpful.

We will have a Theme Week coming up in the Superthread where photos from the Thanksgiving meal can be included or shared, along with the other photos.

Thanks!! Exactly the type of info I was looking for!

Not first hand account but I have some friends that regularly do Thanksgiving at DLR. They did the buffet two years ago and were completely disappointed and underwhelmed. Cold bland food and felt like a cattle call is what they described. They said they are sticking to table service reservations from here on out.

We've done it several years and really enjoy it. The meet and greets are spread around the room. It really is a great experience.

My wife and I have done the Disneyland Family Thanksgiving Feast for the last four years, the past two with our daughter. I would normally recommend this event to anybody, and I got my sister and brother-in-law to join us last year. But after last year, I have some mixed feelings recommending it.

Last year, we waited over and hour and a half past our reservation time to be seated! Every year, you check-in in the hallway outside of the ballroom, they find your ticket, pass it onto another CM who takes you in to pay (APs and gift cards accepted, gratuity included), you pay ahead of time (and get event buttons!) and then you're taken into a waiting room where they call you when your table is ready. The waiting room has refreshments, typically water, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and lemonade. There's also some Disney movie playing for the kids, fall decor setup for pictures, and some seats for people waiting. In past years, we usually waited 15-20 minutes after check-in. Last year, like I said, we had to wait over an hour and a half! We usually grab the latest reservation time, as the feast runs from 12 pm to 6 pm (check-in time), and we like to eat this feast as a Thanksgiving dinner. We were told at check-in that there was about a 30 minute wait. Not a big deal. But when half an hour passed, and nothing, we started to get worried. No other party who checked in around the same time as us had been called either. We started asking around and the room was full of people who had waited for over an hour at that point. I went up to a CM and she was obviously slammed, apologized, but couldn't tell me when we would be called. What was infuriating was either the front end CMs were lying to incoming guests about the wait time or the backup in the dining room was not being communicated to them. At an hour past our reservation, we thought the feast must be winding down by now, and I was worried for my wife and child, who expected to be eating by then, and deeply embarrassed to my sister who was pregnant and also hungry at the time and her husband since we always talked up Disney's quality of service. It was only later reading the post mortem on various message boards that we found out wait times slipped disastrously as the afternoon went on, and they had to extend the feast, characters and entertainment to accommodate all the guests who had been kept waiting outside, which was never communicated to us! I actually filled out a complaint to Disneyland about the experience (my first ever complaint to Disney) and a nice CM called me back, apologized profusely, said they had received other complaints and that she would forward my comments to the food & beverage and special events people in hopes of improving the experience this year.

As you said, the buffet menu is fantastic as there is a very wide selection of food. The quality has always been a notch above all the buffet dining restaurants in the parks and hotels. We felt the quality of the food took somewhat of a dip in 2013, but Disney really redeemed themselves in 2014. Large parties are usually seated on round tops, and smaller parties are seated at long rows of tables but with some spacing between different parties. There are several serving areas including a salad, seafood, bread and cheese station; a kids' station; a traditional holiday items and carving station; a made-to-order pasta station; and a desserts table. The same stations are mirrored on two sides of the ballroom for ease of access. Soft drinks and refills are included. Parking at Downtown Disney is also included with your receipt (I can't recall if there are limitations, but we've never had to pay anything extra).

There are several character stations set against seasonal backdrops throughout the ballroom. In past years, there have always been Pocahontas and Meeko, Pinocchio and Geppeto, Chip and Dale, Koda and Kenai. Last year, I believe they replaced the Brother Bears with Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Last year's feast also had Minnie playing host with her own dinner table for the first time in the many years we've attended. The characters do rotate around in pairs and you can take pictures with all of them. There are character attendants who can take pictures for you. The lines are never too long. Unfortunately, we didn't get to take pictures with Minnie last year because we were starving and ate first worried they'd close down the feast soon. By the time we got around to taking pictures, they had closed the line for Minnie.

There's also a live band on stage that plays ballroom music, holiday songs, and renditions of classic Disney songs.

We won't be attending this year because we have a trip to WDW planned for the week after Thanksgiving. I'm interested to find out how the feast is this year because it had become a kind of family tradition for us. The feast itself is wonderful and I'd like for us to do it again but not if we have to wait like we did last year.

So I hope all that helps. Be aware that if you do plan on attending the feast, ADRs historically open up exactly 60 days before Thanksgiving, which would mean September 27 this year, and they fill up FAST (especially the later dinner time reservations). ADRs may have opened up differently last year and I recall the news was posted on the Disney Parks Blog in advance so keep an eye for Thanksgiving announcements. I've always had better luck with reservations by calling Disneyland Dining than with the website.

Good luck on your decision.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think I might have read in one of the previous reviews that last year Minnie was the only character in a special Thanksgiving costume. Just wanted to confirm.

Yes, Minnie is the only one in a special costume -- a blue plaid dress and white apron. I've attached a picture of the logo from last year, which has Minnie in her festive dress. I believe Donald, Daisy, and Pluto were also at her table, but I don't recall them wearing anything special. I'd add some of the other characters who appear at the feast are rarely in the parks, e.g. Pocahontas. They changed the line up a bit last year -- Minnie's table was new, but I think you can count on Pocahontas being there every year.

My experience was the same as Serial's. The meal itself was FANTASTIC; it truly is amazing how wonderful Disney can make buffet food for such a large number of people. But the check-in process was really poorly-run. We had a reservation right at the start of the event time and it was still chaotic and slow. I also felt that the staff inside the ballroom were trying hard, but weren't really prepared or trained properly for their roles (as just one example, we ordered a bottle of wine and it was quite the production getting it, and it was quite obvious our server had never opened a bottle of wine in her life). We've talked about going back this year, but I think the cons outweighed the pros and we're going to try something else for a year or two.

Is there a photo pass photographer at the dinner?

I believe so, but we don't tend to redeem our Photopass photos so we don't have any pictures to check against. There are definitely character attendants who will take pictures for you with your own camera or phone.

We are getting the photo pass + for our Thamksgiving trip. If they had photographers at the meal it would make it even better.

Just to update since I noticed Sherry posted last year's Disney Parks Blog link re Thanksgiving dining reservations in another thread: http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/bl...lights-for-thanksgiving-at-disneyland-resort/.

You'll notice last year's blog post said reservations for the Thanksgiving feast at DLH were being taken on October 8, 2014, but people in the comments reported being able to make reservations along with every where else on September 28, 2014.

CORRECTION FOR ALL! Disney dining is accepting reservations for the Thanksgiving Feast at the disneyland hotel grand ballroom. Reservations began today, September 28, 2014 after a few glitches to the disney computer system. Unfortunately, we were told October 8th when we contacted disney dining on Thursday, September 25th. We took a chance and called today and much to our surprise; reservations began today for the Thanksgiving Feast at the Disneyland Hotel Grand Ballroom.

I rememebered there being something funny about last year's reservations. I believe September 28, 2014 was exactly 60 days before Thanksgiving last year. If you want to book the feast at DLH this year, I'd suggest doing what the above commenter did and just call Disneyland Dining directly (714-781-3463) 60 days before Thanksgiving (September 27, 2015, at 7 am) and ask if and when you can make a reservation -- regardless of what's on the Disney Parks Blog. Reservations for certain dining times can fill up really fast! There can be a long wait time on the call with Disneyland Dining, so perhaps check if you can also book through the website while you're on hold.

There was a mix-up last year. The Parks Blog initially gave one date for reservations to be open, but then people who called to make them discovered from the Dining folks that the DLH meal's reservations were open on a different date (there was some discussion on it in the Disneyland at Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread (which covers Thanksgiving too) as the confusion was happening. Someone somewhere was given the incorrect date. The Parks Blog then updated/corrected it. It was a fluke/mistake last year -- it doesn't happen every year. Normally the reservation start date that the Parks Blog gives is correct.

Except the "correction" was still incorrect. If I remember last year, I relied on the October 8 date posted on Disney Parks Blog and then I saw in the comments and/or Disboards that reservations for the DLH feast had opened up along with everything else on September 28. I called right away and was able to book that day!

The point is, if you really want to book this feast, call Disneyland Dining as soon as reservations typically open up -- 60 days before (September 27, this year) -- and check.

I think it was Disneyland Dining that gave the Parks Blog the incorrect info, or someone higher up at Disney gave both Dining and the Parks Blog incorrect info -- the Parks Blog doesn't just pull dates out of a hat; someone at Disney gives them the info -- but it's neither here nor there. It doesn't hurt to call on 9/27, of course -- except that many of our holiday travelers are calling from other countries, and it's inconvenient for them to call at certain times, just to see if the booking window has possibly opened up. That's why I am saying that usually the date for reservations that is given out is correct, and that last year was a weird fluke. They should probably be okay if they wait until whatever date is announced.

Of course, this year there is already trouble with the reservations for October, and who knows what kind of mayhem will ensue with November....
