They had arrived fairly early and got a decent spot. As they waited a stranger came up to the group area and started talking to everyone. My Uncle Geoff said he was pretty sure this guy, Karl, was a bit slow, but was nice. Everyone waiting was talking to each other as they passed the time. Karl talked with all the people around them and from what they gathered he had taken the train in from Seattle and was going to watch the parade and then move on to Boston to visit family. He was toting his suitcase and carry on type bag. At one point Aunt Mary said she heard him say "who will watch my bag while I go to the M & M store." No one replied and at first my family thought he knew the other family he had been talking to, but he didn’t. So Karl left....and left the suitcase right next to 6 year old Abby (my niece). Then after a bit he hadn't come back and someone reported this suitcase was abandoned! You just can’t leave a suitcase somewhere at an event like this. The dogs were brought in, as were many cops toting heavy guns and the bomb squad and secret service. After a bit they cleared the area of people and they had to wait down in a little plaza area for the all clear. The bag was taken and finally they were allowed back to the viewing area, but sadly lost a little bit of their space, but still were pretty lucky to get most of it back. Then Karl returned and my BIL Rob broke the news to Karl that his bag was taken away. Karl went to find out what happened and was never seen again.
