Thanksgiving in NYC, How much can you do and see in less than 4 days?

We checked in and they directed us to this mega long line. Wow!

agc1 by Jenseib, on Flickr

That line looks impressive.

We later found out that they have seating times and we all enter at the same time.

That does not sound like a very efficient way of doing things. What a shame that the service was bad as well.

We headed back via Sax 5th Ave so we could see the lights on the side of the building.

That is beautiful.

Claire swore one day she would be moving to New York to live.

You never know.

Those balloons look really neat. I am glad you found them.

I laugh because I don't know if Claire will ever even be able to move out of our house. She doesn't spend the night at friends house often or even my parents as she misses us too much. I thought she would have gotten over it by now, but in the 6th grade and still is a homebody.

As always Jen you took awesome pictures.

I'll admit right now I know absolutely nothing about the whole American Girl thing so I skipped over that.

Neat to see the balloons all ready and the lights being moved.

I have to say I am on Claire's side with the glove. But I am a germaphob myself. Wiping everything down with alcohol wipes when I travel. Pretty sure one day I will forget and come down with a deadly disease!

Thanks.
Up until a few years back I really knew nothing about American girl either. My older daughter never had interest in them.

I am not excited about germs, but I have some germaphobes in my family and those are the ones that get sick more often. LOL. I am not intentionally going out to get germs but I think you have to be exposed to some to be healthier.....and I do live on a farm. hahaha.

Day 3, Nov. 26, 2015

Thanksgiving!!!

We woke up to find Thanksgiving cards slid under our doors from Geoff. I don’t think he ever slept this whole trip. The cards were nice and each had a gift card to Starbucks as well.

With Geoff being a high up Marriott member we also got the perk of breakfast in a conference room area for 2 of our 3 days. So we made a quick stop there to fill up for the morning.

I had to meet up with Book pretty early this morning. The rest of the family had a spot in mind to watch the parade. Gail, Alexis and Geoff went to stake out their territory pretty early as well and set up camp. Claire and I took off on foot and were to meet Brook at a Subway station in Times Square….well that is where she was going to get off and then walk us to the location.

finding by Jenseib, on Flickr

It was another great day and not too cold. Actually it was probably the best weather to watch a parade in if you had to be outdoors for this time of year.

Claire and I started off and we got a message from Brook that they were running late so could we meet them closer to the destination and she gave me directions. With the timing of us walking and them on the subway we should arrive around the same time.

thanks1 by Jenseib, on Flickr

thanks2 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Ironically the corner we were to wait for them was right at the hotel we used to stay at when we visited New York in my Teen years. The Wellington.

thanks4 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We stayed there 3 years in a row and always had a suite since there were so many of us that went and shared a room. We had the same room all 3 years.

The Wellington is right across the street from the Carnegie Deli, which has the best Cheesecake EVER!!! And great sandwiches too. However, Geoff had told me a few months ago that the Deli had been closed for mysterious reasons. Actually a homeless guy said it had some kind of gas leak or something and it had to be fixed.

thanks5 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I was sad to see it still closed….but good news…it did re-open this past spring.

deli by Jenseib, on Flickr

We waited a few minutes and then saw Brook, Joe and Henry and we said our hellos and moved on towards our destination.

thanks3 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We went inside the building and our names were on a list and we got nametags and went up to the correct floor. We were really early so we had a good choice of seats. There were a couple rooms open to us and many people had chosen the room on the corner with more windows, so we went in the bigger room with just one side facing the street and it ended up being a great spot.

I already look dead tired. That’s what happens when you burn the candle at both ends and then try to sleep in a room with someone snoring.

jen75 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I had brought a little goodie bag for Henry and it had some small lego type sets in it and he was keeping himself busy building those.

As it got closer to parade time we perched on the little ledge by the window for better viewing.

So while we were watching the parade I had been texting pictures to my family to show them the great view. There was an unattended suitcase left right by my niece and they cleared the whole block while the bomb squad came and looked it over. Once given the all clear they could come back, however they didn’t get their exact same spot back, which would have totally ticked me off. When I started questioning it they told me they would tell me the details later. OK then. Wow!

What an amazing experience that was. Such a nice view and bathrooms nearby (which we did use), and it was great seeing Brook and family and we also chatted with others in the room and they were all so friendly.

It was now time to move on though. Brook’s family had plans to go out to eat and we had late lunch plans too. We said good byes and thanked Joe for letting us tag along. We would be meeting up with Brook and Henry again tomorrow so we confirmed out time and meeting area and headed off. They did point us the way to Central Park and the Apple store if we wanted to go look but we decided to just head back towards the hotel.

This was where the parade had gone through and it was now so empty.

We purchased some and as we were leaving Geoff texted that he wanted us to wait as he was coming and he wanted to get some M & M’s too. So we waited outside where it was cooler (the store was a madhouse and HOT).

I think we got the choice of 3 different words we wanted to put on the batch we were doing.

thanks133 by Jenseib, on Flickr

With our purchases made we headed out.

jen23 by Jenseib, on Flickr

Geoff then told me the story of the bomb threat.

They had arrived fairly early and got a decent spot. As they waited a stranger came up to the group area and started talking to everyone. My Uncle Geoff said he was pretty sure this guy, Karl, was a bit slow, but was nice. Everyone waiting was talking to each other as they passed the time. Karl talked with all the people around them and from what they gathered he had taken the train in from Seattle and was going to watch the parade and then move on to Boston to visit family. He was toting his suitcase and carry on type bag. At one point Aunt Mary said she heard him say "who will watch my bag while I go to the M & M store." No one replied and at first my family thought he knew the other family he had been talking to, but he didn’t. So Karl left....and left the suitcase right next to 6 year old Abby (my niece). Then after a bit he hadn't come back and someone reported this suitcase was abandoned! You just can’t leave a suitcase somewhere at an event like this. The dogs were brought in, as were many cops toting heavy guns and the bomb squad and secret service. After a bit they cleared the area of people and they had to wait down in a little plaza area for the all clear. The bag was taken and finally they were allowed back to the viewing area, but sadly lost a little bit of their space, but still were pretty lucky to get most of it back. Then Karl returned and my BIL Rob broke the news to Karl that his bag was taken away. Karl went to find out what happened and was never seen again.

Yeah, this is the kind of stuff that only can happen to me and/or my family.

You really had a great place to view parade! Nothing like being comfortable for that. BTW not crazy about Mariah myself.

Why have I never gone to the M & M store? Oh probably because I always run out of time. But I'll have to make the time next visit as it looks fun to personalize them.

Yes it is crazy how a simple friendly, albeit maybe slow, person can cause such a stir. But that is the times we live in and a worry at any such large event. Although I have to say things like that don't only happen to your family. Although I can't think of one to top it myself

Those parade pictures are amazing! I keep saying one of these days I will get to NYC for the parade. It is definitely on my bucket list! You got very lucky with Brook being able to get you such a great place to watch! I did Times Square for NYE once, and said never again, and if I did, Id spring for a hotel where you could watch the action from the room! I am glad the bomb scare was just that! Must have been pretty nerve wracking though! And I am with you, I would be mad if I lost my great spot!

It was a great spot.....she is such a whacko. I was really disappointed with Disney when they made her the godmother to the Fantasy.

What a nice surprise to start the day with.

They spoil us a lot.

That sounds like a nice perk.

it was nice to have breakfast included a couple of those days. It saved some money for sure and we didn't have to go looking for it either.

That sounds like a wise decision.

By the time the parade was over, our room was practically empty. I guess the other room might have had a better view? But we had a great one and it was nice to not be crowded.

This is probably one of the most famous parades so I am so glad to have seen it in person.

It really was. But you can't be too careful these days.

We did see some reasonable pricing for the Olive Garden on the corner near the M&M store for NYE. I want to say it was like $500 a person...but that was a bargain and included some drinks and meals too. And prime location.

We headed back to the hotel to get ready for our Thanksgiving Brunch. I swear this building was swaying but when I asked others they said they didn’t feel it.

thanks134 by Jenseib, on Flickr

I wondered if it was because my ears were popping each time I rode the elevator. But each day the sway became more and more.

Geoff had yet ANOTHER surprise waiting for us on the table.

jen28 by Jenseib, on Flickr

That is a chocolate turkey! He got it from some fancy New York Chocolate place. The girls helped him break it up afterwards and then put the pieces in baggies for all of us. That chocolate was heavenly!!!!!

thanks139 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We took a zillion pictures of the chocolate turkey some with the kids and adults and some of just him. It was funny as Abby was upset about something and she wouldn’t calm down and I told her that if she settled down she could have the “gobbler” part. She did and when they broke up the pieces Claire said she grabbed it because she said I told her she could have it. LOL. She wasn’t going to forget that at all.

The meal was a buffet. It was pretty good. Not as good as home cooking but it was still good. Amanda has a ton of food allergies and she had talked to the chef yesterday and he also has the same allergies so he really fixed her up. He was bringing her out all sorts of special dishes he made just for her. She loved it as sometimes it is really hard for her to eat out due to her allergies. I was a bit disappointed with the desserts. They weren’t bad, but just not enough selection with things I liked….but then again I was so full I was about to burst so I probably should have skipped dessert anyways.

The family.

It was AMAZING!!! If you ever get a chance to see this show…do it! This was my 3rd time. The first being in my teens, the second was in my 30’s and that was a traveling show that came to a local theatre. The girls just loved it too. Claire used to dance, Alexis does dance still and is very involved and Abby is all about being beautiful and it was so magical for her. Gail got some great video of Abby enjoying it and really getting into the magic of it all.

After the show we used the restroom and then took a few pictures.

jen33 by Jenseib, on Flickr

We then headed out. The Cast was outside signing autographs and we didn’t stop but we saw them as we passed by. Abby wanted to ride a taxi back so Gail, Mom, Abby and Alexis jumped in the taxi. Geoff and Amanda had not gone over by Sax last night with us as they were eating at the steakhouse so they wanted to go see the lights so Claire and I headed that way with them.

After watching the lights we stopped off for some pictures.

And there was Trump Tower.

Donny did not invite us in for drinks however.

And the Apple store, which is the coolest thing. It’s a cube on land and you have to go down underground to the actual store.

Claire wanted to go in, so we did. I think we may have used the bathroom there too.

By then, Amanda’s feet were killing her and she wanted to take a taxi back. I was fine walking back as was Geoff, but Claire wanted to hop in the taxi too. Amanda wouldn’t ride alone or with just Claire, so Geoff went with them and I said I would be fine walking back myself. It was a beautiful night and the air felt so nice.

I started my walk back and took some pictures along the way.

Walking through Times Square it was like it was daylight.

I went back to my room and Claire was not there, so I headed down to Mary and Geoff’s room and there she was. We sat and talked a bit and Geoff said his niece, Tracey, was texting him and told us to go down to Times Square and stand in front of the camera and she would watch us. Wow, we didn’t realize there was a web cam.

So Claire, Geoff and I went down (I can’t remember if Amanda went or not). Tracey said the camera faced the black and white hot dog stand so we looked and found like 8 cameras in that area. As we looked around we realized there are cameras all over Times Square….who knew? LOL.

We figured out which one it was finally and waved and Geoff called her and they talked. While standing there several people came up to talk to me. People often come up to me to comment on my hair. It’s often liked by many people, and then others were just coming up to ask why we were randomly waving. Tracey was laughing as she saw all these people come up to talk to me.

We finally said good bye to Tracey and headed back to our rooms. At this point it was like I hit a brick wall and I needed to get some sleep.

It was definitely the best Thanksgiving ever. We did so much and it was all fun. I really liked being able to do so many different things instead of laying around the house and eating 12 meals.

Thanks for the NYC Thanksgiving report Jen! The parade is definitely on my bucket list! How long was the drive from Ohio?

I forgot how ou said the elevate was super fast in your hotel. Last trip we visited Freedom Tower and that was fast (third fastest in world I think they said) and I can understand getting sick of that.

Nice show at RCMH

You know there are cameras EVERYWHERE, right? Funny people asked you about waving. Maybe crazies attract crazies? Ha ha.

What a busy day you had. I love the look of that chocolate turkey. I am glad it was tasty, too. The show looked nice. The story about the cameras made me smile.

I think it was around 9-10 hours. We drove the majority the first day and left just a few hours for our arrival day and then did the same going home, with the longer drive first and the shorter after. We do make a lot of stops though. We told Rob with so many girls, young and old, there would be no complaining about bathroom breaks.

Those fast elevators kind of spook me out. LOL.

Really where I live, you never would even think about a webcam being around. It just never crossed my mind and I was shocked to see so many once I looked.

I still crave that chocolate. I think Geoff needs to get us one every year now. hahaha
