Thanksgiving in America is next month. Any notable moments you enjoy?

Today was Thanksgiving in Canada (hence the reason we had NHL games at 1pm on a Monday). It's the United States' turn next month. Have you had any great experiences during this special time?

For me, 2022 was quite a weird one. I spent my US Thanksgiving in Canada, where I hung out with my cousins and munched on lots of great stuff, including tons of Timmies iced capps and Mirage bars. Due to that differing timeline, I had to make do with a Korean BBQ that year since there wasn't really much turkey left by that time. However, I did have an early thanksgiving dinner in the form of a Wawa hot turkey bowl with all the fixings on the day before I left. I also had the rare moment of going to a shopping mall on US Thanksgiving Day since it was business as usual in Canada that day.

It was mostly a great experience but not entirely perfect.

I love the smells of thanksgiving-the turkey, the pies (and the KFC my youngest eats in place of turkey ). I like cooking a large meal that means for several days I don't have to worry about cooking anything (except the obligatory leftover casserole) so I can focus on decorating for christmas.

before the grands and some other family members passed (and prior to our move from our home state) we used to host everyone for Thanksgiving and while I miss those family gatherings I have to say that preparing the same menu in my fleece jammies and the only 'dress-up' in the day being a change into a clean set of similar fleece wear after a liesurly bath while the turkey cooks makes for a much more relaxed day.

I love Thanksgiving. It is my absolute favorite holiday. I enjoy the prep, the lists, shopping for food, cooking, cleaning and the whole nine yards. The more people the better!

Well, growing up, Thanksgiving was not a day off work for my mom, and she worked graveyard shift, so we did Thanksgiving, it just mean she gave up some sleep to make it happen. She finally moved to a day shift my Sophomore year of High School, but it still was a normal work day for her.
Fast forward to adulthood, Thanksgiving was a regular work day for my wife and I too. When we started our family, about the time our kids were 4 and 8 we decided to shift our Thanksgiving to the Saturday afterwards. That allowed some out of town friends to have their Thanksgiving, then travel here to join our families. Nice gatherings. The menu had to change over time, My daughter stopped eating meat. My daughter in law is allergic to turkey, so we haven't roasted a whole turkey since 2011, just a turkey breast, and Tofurkey roast.
But time has taken it's toll, 3 of the regulars have passed. 2 are no longer able to travel, and both our kids have moved away where it is not practical for us to get together. Just my wife and I. So just a turkey breast, stuffing, and one homemade pie. But those group gatherings were special.

Did Macy Days Parade couple of times, if done right can be enjoyable.
I'm a Lions fan, so there's been some bad years and some good ones.

We have hosted Coast Guard Recruits for nearly every Thanksgiving and Christmas since 1998. These men and women train in TRACEN Cape May NJ.
One activity we often enjoy doing together is to decorate Gingerbread Houses. We have met many young men and women from all over USA and Puerto Rico!

One year we were watching Philadelphia news and the story of the recruits was being run. “Our” recruits saw themselves on TV that year!

We celebrate Thanksgiving all weekend long. I like to get a mix of family time, baking and cooking, board games or a hike, and maybe a little football and/or reading. This year, I will also be watching the first episodes of Stranger Things 5. I put up my Christmas decorations Thanksgiving weekend.

Now it's all family but for years while I was a Army wife we would have tons of soldiers over who were unable to go home. I've had close to 50 at times. When my kuds were in college it was in our area and we did the same for students who didn't go home *more have jobs they have to work than one would think or they couldn't afford to go home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas). Those 3 ir 4 turkey holidays were a ton of work bit also a ton of fun!

I love watching the Macy's Parade, the smell of turkey filling the house, and an unusual amount of attention to preparing desserts that we're always too full to eat. I'm thankful that we will have my family visiting for the holiday this year. I'm also a turkey hoarder (stock up on them when the prices drop for Thanksgiving) and I'm reminded that I still have one in the deep freeze. Yes, even the act of turkey hoarding is a fond memory. I haven't been up for feasting like that of late so if it's big enough, I may just save it for the holiday and skip the hoarding this year.
