Growing up, it was always pumpkin and mince meat pie. But no one in my house but me likes mince meat. Lots of families here in Texas do pecan pie, but I'm allergic, so no pecan. For the last few years I've been making a pear crisp, but this year the kids have requested something chololaty.
We are only cooking for 5 this year. My little family of four and my brother. My husband said to me that at least with less people I wouldn't have to cook as much. That we could probably just have one or two desserts instead of 15 (that was an exaggeration...it's usually more like 6 or 7)
To which I said
Cut out a dessert???? What?? This is my chance to go completely overboard (something which I am quite the fan of) and be totally impractical! It's a FEAST! So what if I have 3 kinds of veggies, 2 types of potatoes, and 6 desserts for five people? I loooove to cook and bake. This is my holiday baby!!!
This year it looks like we are having-
Pumpkin pie, Apple pie, Cheesecake, Banana Cream pie (brothers fav.), and cookies that look like corn cobs & cupcakes that look like turkeys (I like to have something for the kiddos to help with...but these will probably end up being shared with neighbor kids)
I will be visiting DIL's in Michigan this Thanksgiving. Three of the 20 or so are severely allergic to nuts. I am sure that my favorite will not be served, so I will have to wait until I get home and bake myself a pecan pie. That's OK, more for me.
At the dinner I am hosting for my family (small family) we are having Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Pie and Jello for the kids.
At DH's parents' house on Thanksgiving day (LARGE FAMILY!) There will probably be:
Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, lemon chiffon pie, cheesecake, pumpkin trifle, jello jigglers, apple pie, and probably something else I've forgotten.
Bake the cake according to package directions; cool and cube into small squares. Make pudding according to package directions; chill. In a large serving dish, place half of the cake cubes. Drizzle half the coffee over the cake, and spread half of the pudding over that. Top with half of the whipped topping, sprinkled with half the crumbled candy bars. Repeat layers in the same order. Refrigerate until serving.
Got this as part of an email message - we usually bring a pumpkin or apple pie to add to the dessert table - guess I got the message that I shouldn't do that this year!
Our desserts this year will be:
Carrot Cake -
Chocolate Pies -
Coconut Pies -
Pecan Pies -
Ambrosia -
All the pies are Granny's recipes!! We haven't had all these in a long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my local groceries has really good pies so I am buying mine this year. Hopefully raspberry or mixed berries. No pumpkin for us. Maybe apple crisp too.
of course my little green jello salad (yes it is desert to us lol). It is lime jello, pinapple chunky, cool whip, and cottage cheese mmmmmmmmm. have a FROZEN apple pie, and will probably pick up a little desert at the store before we pick up my son's guest.
pumpkin cheesecake with my family is a must. My inlaws like my pumpkin triffle so that is what they are getting.
Pumpkin Triffle with Gingerbread
