Hi I'm Tracey and I'm brand new here, although I've been lurking for awhile. I stumbled onto running when my son ran his first 5k 2 years ago. To encourage him, I said "If you win, I'll run a 5k" well wouldn't you know it---that stinker came in first in his age group. I've never been an athlete, although I was a pom-pom girl. When we had to run the mile in 7th grade, I cried. How was I ever going to run a 5k? Luckily, I was 8 months pregnant at the time and used that to put it off for 15 months:) . Last year I told my son that I was still planning to run a 5k---he said, "It's ok mom, you don't have to" at which time I realized he didn't think I could. The challenge was on. I found y'all which led me to C25K. An injury sidetracked my Nov. 5K, but we're ready to go for April. And......I just sent in my application for the 1/2 in 2009. I am so thankful to all of you, because through your stories and encouragement for one another----I know I can do this. You are touching so many lives outside of this community. I'm glad I've decided to jump on it---now please assure me that the slightly sick, nervous feeling I have upon sending in that application will go away.:rolleyes1

Hello from another newbie!!

Isn't this a great place? I was reading through the bios the other day and I was just so moved by everyone (not an experience I often have when reading a Forum!).

I think we're pretty much on the same schedule - I'm looking for a 5K in this area in April, and signed up for the half in 2009! I hope that feeling goes away, but I'm on board no matter what. So far I'm enjoying the ride!

Yeah! Welcome both of you! Aren't the people here great!

The Disney half is going to be so much fun!

:welcome: Justsmile :) and Kira G! :rainbow:

Shoooooooooot, (in my best Tow Mater voice)if I can do a 20K trail race as my very first race at nearly 50, y'all can do a little ole 1/2 marathon!! YOU CAN DO IT! Can't wait to meet you in January!

I'm so glad you found us. I was a pom pom girl too. I have NEVER heard anyone else call it that. I always just said drill team and I said on my bio in the bio thread when I tried to do Lacrosse in high school I couldn't run the 1 mile that they required.!!!

I am so glad you joined us!!!

PS - Can I ask where you are from because I have never heard anyone else say pom pom girl, so I'm wondering if it is the area you went to school :confused3

Angie - my stepmother said she was a pom pom girl - she was from Illinois.

Kira and Tracey - welcome. This group is amazing. I had my doubts about being able to finish the TOT 13k but I signed up anyway. Its great motivation to get out there and get it done. So far that is my furthest distance and I jumped in and signed up for the 2009 full marathon with this group I am sure we will all make our goals.

We had a Pom Pon Squad in High school in NW IN and DS' high school has a PomPon squad also - they do Dance Competetions - and do very well actually!! :thumbsup2

Welcome Tracey and Kira!!

Another newbie here, too and I've gotta tell ya, you'll love it here. Did my second 5K at AK during the marathon weekend this year and just have become hooked. My next 5k is March.

As for the slightly queasy feeling from sending off the 1/2 app :scared: ... 2009 is my first one as well and it took about 2 days of hanging around on here for it to go away.

Thanks for all your sweet words. I can't wait to get to know everyone better. I read your stories and tears come to my eyes. They are so moving.

Angie-I'm in Missouri---I wonder if it's a Mid-West kind of thing! Oops, I see you're in Florida. We did some drill too, but were technically called the Pom pom squad. Twenty years later and I'm still saying I was a pom pom girl.

I am in FL now but went to high school in Maryland! I'm not too far behind you, 17 years a go I was a pom pom girl. :)

First welcome to all newbies.

Second, I've yet to do a half or full marathon, nor have I ever been a pom-pom girl (but I did check them out on occassion during the course off football games, wrestling matches, etc.)

Third, subject to the caveat above, from my former jock life, the queasy feeling (i.e., butterflies) is not necessarily a bad thing. It is a sign that you are taking this seriously. Even after you train and are prepared, the butterflies may be back as a sign of anticipation and excitement. As I used to tell team mates, if you don't have butterflies, you're either over-confident or just don't care.

Of course, if the queasy feeling lasts more than 48 hours or is accompanied by fever, extreme nausia or hives, consult with your doctor or other licensed healthcare professional.

My husband and I are going to Disney for a "relaxing" 5th anniversary trip and doing all kinds of deluxe new-experience things (I drag him to Disney every year...)
When I asked another couple if they'd like to join us, they agreed on the condition that we all run the ToT 13K. I haven't seen a gym in years, so this is really intimidating! But we started the CB25K program tonight, and I'm still walking (barely =)) after finishing the week 1 program. 8 months will be plenty of time to get used to running 13k, right? =)

You're all awesome and inspiring; I hope to see some of you there!

If any of you newbees are not on a miles and hours team you might want to consider joining. It will help you stay motivated to keep training all year.

A bunch of us did the ToT last year and it was awesome. Disney dropped the ball on their after race party but we WISHers have tons of fun anyway.

Welcome to the WISH and to the maddness we lovingly call "Events andCompetition". Yes we all have a few screws loose on here, some more than others.

I definately think you have enough time to train for the 13k. Last year I started running in June and signed up for the 13k shortly thereafter and I was able to make it through the 13k and actually didn't feel bad afterword!! You just have to make sure you get your training in - but this team with help you stay motivated that is for sure.

Hope to see you at the 13k in Oct. I can't WAIT!!!

Oooo, how do I sign up? I saw that there WERE teams, I just figured it was too late to sign up since it's February already!

I heard about the issues with the ToT last year; I'm just hoping they get straightened out for this year (I went to Disney January 2nd, 2005, which was the very start of the (old) new DDP - trust me, there were tons of issues with that, too...so I'm just thinking they needed an inaugural year to work out the kinks...)

Regardless, the next day is DH and my fifth anniversary, so staying out late to party and then coming home to crash at the Beach Club for a day sounds like a lovely time!

I thought that the hours and miles groups were started already and that I was coming in too late. I'd like to join as well.

vscohenYou will be fine on time. I was not overly athletic or even underly athletic.:rotfl2: I always liked to walk, but started with the C25K at the end of July and it was a great program. I felt myself getting stronger everyday. Some days were harder than others. The first time I had to run the 2 miles---I remember thinking "no way" and when I did it---I raised my hands in victory. You will be able to do the ToT13k in October. I could do it now. You have plenty of time. I found comfort in knowing that I could walk if I needed to. We're hoping to do the 13k(it's going to depend on transportation being provided) and I've signed up for the 1/2 in Jan. You can do it and happy running.:cheer2:
