I just wanted to thank you, Corey, for your explanation of life-guarding at Disney World on the July 21st episode of the podcast.

It was very sad to hear the news of a child drowning just a few days ago. Of course, there was chatter on the boards about it (without anyone knowing any of the details) and everyone voicing their opinion.

Drowning is often a very "quiet" episode... in other words, drowning doesn't happen like it's depicted in the movies, with arms flailing and loud gasps for air. Once you get water in your nose and lungs, or your head can't stay above water, there is no wasted effort in calling for help...because you can't. You are just trying to stay alive at that point.

Thank you for explaining the rigorous training and seriousness of life guarding at Disney. I think that it must be the most stressful job out of all, and quite honestly, guards should be compensated as such. I appreciated your honest first-hand experience into the training of life guards and what they are and aren't responsible for at the pools.

I am just glad that you shed some light on the whole subject, from the life guard's point-of-view and from Disney's.

I agree Lisann. Corey's take on lifeguarding at WDW was very informative. You could tell by his demeanor how seriously he took the responsibility of lifeguarding while working there.

I recommend everyone who hasn't seen it watch the American Red Cross drowning video. It's very graphic; it shows actual drownings. It is absolutely galvanizing to see how silently and unobtrusively it happens. It may help you save a life.
