The honors course this semester was a criminology class and she required us to do a 10-15 page research paper on some topic related to crime. People did topics like drunk driving laws and whether certain types of music influenced the likelihood of someone to commit a crime. I opted to do mine on breed specific legislation (the banning and restrictions of certain breeds of dogs). I did some research and quickly realized that I would have to change my direction since there is no such thing as accurate dog bite statistics. Bites by pit bull type dogs are sensationalized by the media, breed identification is based off of what the victim or owner says (and that is completely unreliable, i once had a guy argue with me that a dog he claimed to be a stray rottweiler was actually a pit bull), and people don't report a lot of attacks. If a chihuahua bites, it is less likely to be reported than if a larger dog bites simply because it is less likely to require medical attention. I explained all this to my professor. We discussed the topic. She has no idea what she is talking about ("What do you mean they are getting rid of the pit bulls?" "I mean they are killing any dog that remotely resembles a pit on the spot"). Yet she is still insisting on me getting these bite records and doing a case study on Denver (which has BSL) and Boulder (which doesn't). And it's due in less than 2 hours (so I've procrastinated a bit, but I have been doing research, I just can't find what she wants). I'm just so frustrated with this whole thing and am so glad that once I hand this in I will be DONE with her!!!
