Just back from 5 days at DL and had to relate a story that shows just how special Disney can be. I hesitated at first to post this, because someone could misuse the info. But I'm sure such people don't frequent this board (right?) so it should be ok.
My 6 yr old daughter absolutely loves pin trading and runs excitedly up to any CM she sees with a lanyard. Her very favorite character is Ariel, which is hard to find on CM lanyards. But she's persistent, so over the last 2 years she had managed to acquire 5 Ariel pins on her lanyard (along with several others).
While dining at Ariel's Grotto, she left her lanyard in the bathroom. When we returned, not more than a few minutes later, the lanyard was gone. We filed a lost and found report, but it was obviously stolen. Since we were staying at DLH, we called Guest Services, told them what had happened, and asked if they could possibly leave a little treat in the room to cheer our daughter up.
The rest of the day, every time we say a CM with a lanyard, my daughter would just look away - it was so sad. But when we returned to the room, there on the bed was a letter that read "Dear Megan, Ariel heard that you lost your lanyard and feels very bad. We hope this helps cheer you up. From, your Disney pals." With it, was a signed picture of Mickey and Minney, along with a new lanyard with a few new Ariel pins on it. Needless to say, my daughter was ecstatic.
The next day, she wanted to thank Ariel, so we went to see her at DL. While in line, I snuck over to the CM managing the line and told him the story and asked if Ariel could say something about it. Ariel went on break right before it was our turn, and when she returned, she greeted my daughter by name, asked if she was feeling better, and gave her a few little shells (which it just so happens my daughter loves to collect as well). As you can imagine, it was magical.
Unfortunately, we didn't get the CM's name at guest services who supplied the new lanyard. But in case any CM's read this, here's a big thank you for turning a disaster into a delight. And for anyone who asks why it's worth spending more money to stay at one of the Disney hotels, my answer will continue to be "the magic".
And in case you're wondering, "Ariel" has supplied my daughter with most of the stolen pins. There's only one special one left, and it looks like that's still for sale at WDW, so I'm sure that "Ariel" will send that one while we're there later this year.
