Texting in theater

The light is very distracting and annoying in a darkened theater.

Exactly.... And what moron pays 8 bucks to sit in the dark and text? Put the phone away for two hours and enjoy the movie.
I fussed at a lady in front of me last week. She wasnt even texting she was playing on facebook. She finally put it away when I asked.
A friend of mine bought one of those pocket cell phone jammers for 30$ from china. He takes it to the movies with him. If someone starts making calls or texting... Poof no signal.

How long till she realizes she is in that PSA and tries to sue?

Who knows, but I think it'll be hilarious that she won't realize that she's given up the anonymity that the Theater was kind enough to leave her with.

That's so stupid. Why is texting going to bother someone? Put the phone on silent so there aren't any beeps, what's the big deal?

The light that shines in very bright in a dark theater.

Uh.....I don't text in the theater but I check the time which turns on the lit screen. You gonna kick me out? LOL

I agree though......the PSA was great and that girl was profoundly and amusingly stupid. LOL

p.s. Last trip to WDW I did use my phone as a flashlight for several darkened theaters. Ellens Energy Adventure was one of them. Sorry but when you have idiots sitting on the floor in that theater it's downright dangerous for it to be that dark. I'll do it again if I have to because I don't plan on being a Disney-patron-trips-on-stupid-guest-in-too-dark-theater-and-ends-up-2 weeks-in-Celebration-hospital person........I will use my phone as a flashlight so there! LOL

That is awesome. :thumbsup2

When I saw "True Grit" a few months ago, I not only had the annoying screen of someone's phone lit up in front of me, I also heard the 'click-click-click' as he texted for nearly the entire last half of the movie.

Same thing goes for Broadway shows too. When I saw American Idiot back in February, these two girls next to me kept updating their Facebook pages for most of the show...because clearly, their friends needed to know that they just saw Billie Joe Armstrong RIGHT NOW. :sad2:

What was worse is that the mom saw them doing and thought it was funny.

Truthfully it doesn't bother me at all. I think i am used to it because of all my deaf friends. Our communication via phone is completely text not voice. If I do need to take a text I will go out of the room, theater, whatever, but I will occasionally check my phone to see if there is anything I need to urgently reply to.

LOL...go right ahead Granma! It's okay, I post before I finish reading sometimes too. It helps me from letting it get lost in my head.;) If I offended you with said "simmer down" I apologize. :flower3:

No worries, Fred. I actually thought it was funny. :)

I could put up with people who let their phones ring in the theater, but the people who text finally drove me over the edge and I almost never go to see movies anymore. The texting screen is brighter than the movie screen and when it's a couple rows in front of you and on for several minutes (or on and off repeatedly), it can drive you crazy. It's a sheer lack of consideration for other people trying to enjoy the movie.

I've confronted people texting in theaters before if they are right in front of me. Don't you know it's ALWAYS an "extreme emergency." Yeah, sure. I've asked them to please deal with the "emergency" out in the hallway or lobby or I'd get the manager. Funny, they have put their phones away after that. ;)

It is so distracting-- my eyes are drawn to the light of the phone... I can't keep focus on the movie.

What did people do 15 years ago? Why do people act like they cannot breathe unless they have their cell phones in their hands. I make sure to turn my phone off. If there is an emergency, someone can call the theater directly or come and get me. We are becoming way too dependent on them.

Unfortunately movie theater etiquette is a lost art. Their needs to be a re-education program built into elementary schools about how to behave in a movie theater. The importance of this program should rival that of D.A.R.E.

Take your seat, turn your phones off, turn your dvd players off, put your Iphone away, turn off your IPAD, take off your headphones and put your IPOD away, plant your feet firmly on the ground, and shut your mouths!

Totally agree with both of you! :thumbsup2

I remember as a kid going to the movies almost every weekend, it cost 50 cents and the owner's wife would patrol the aisles every so often to keep people in line. She would shush people if they were talking. I just hate paying out good money to see a movie in a theater and having to put up with people talking (and they don't even have the common courtesy to at least whisper), and the cell phone usage has just gotten ridiculous. I just don't understand why people want to pay to go to a movie, and then mess with their cell phone the entire time. :confused3

THe LIGHT!

Texters should be EXPELLED from theaters!

The problem isn't as much with kids as it is with adults. I don't go to kids movies anymore, the ones I usually go to attract an older crowd and its unbelievable how badly these people will behave.

The last movie I went to a cell phone went off and the elderly lady in front of me answered it. I was going to let it go because I assumed it was some kind of an emergency, no she was reciting her recipe for a cheese ball.

They will talk in a loud voice to the ladies they are with. I know what its like to live with someone who is hard of hearing, so they know they are being loud, but because they have reached a certain age, they feel the rules don't apply to them.

Really?! I go to the movies AT LEAST once a week... and have never noticed this!

When the "no talking or texting" message comes up on the screen, I just figured they were referring to the sound effects.

I may be way off here, but are you in your 20's or 30's?

I (in my 40's) am extremely distracted when someone is texting near me in a theater - it's not just the light aspect, but also the action/movement of keying - sorta like if someone is constantly fidgeting in front of you at the movies.

But I would venture to say younger generations are not bothered because it has become a normal everday activity like drining or eating.

I WISH I had an Alamo Drafthouse near me. I'd patronize them just because of their stance on this issue. The pSA is hilarious and that girl is a total moron.

I have one just down the road from me...I haven't visited it yet (newly built), but I think I will look for it as a theater option first when we go see a movie!

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!

I find myself getting anxious if I go somewhere w/o my phone and then I think, really, 2 hours without my phone isn't going to kill me. It's actually nice to go the store & get my groceries without being interrupted. :)

My problem is that I don't have a landline, so that's the only way for people to reach me on the phone.

We got rid of our landline about 3 years ago, when our youngest DD got her cellphone for her birthday. There was just no sense in having it. I haven't missed it since. My DH talks on his cell more than anyone I know. My girls only text pretty much. I maybe talk 40-60 min a month. Gosh,I sound old. "You kids with your portable phones and computers. Back in my day......blah blah blah. I'm not even 40 and i sound like an old lady.

It is SO very distracting ... had four girls constantly texting during Pirates movie. If you paid for the film, how about just WATCH it! :)

At the big film festivals a huge "no no" and they'll warn you once then expell from the theater. (others in audience with hiss also if someone opens screen)
