Texting disaster averted on Speedway

A teenage girl was texting in her car on Tomorrowland's Speedway as she approached the end of the ride. Looking down, she failed to notice her speed as she closed in on the stopped vehicle in front of her. A CM rushed to her car and alerted her before she slammed into the other vehicle. Even though her vehicle was going at less than ten miles per hour, it wasn't a good indicator about her future behind the wheel of a car on an actual road.

Scary. :crazy2:

Well, yes. And, texting while driving in the real world is a national problem.

But, at Disney I have seen "full-speed" crashes at the Speedway un-boarding area dozens of times before anyone had smart phones, etc.

Young kids sometimes don't understand when to slow down,
accelerators stick, people are just not paying attention for various reasons,
some idiots just want to play "bumper-cars" at the speedway.

And, yes, it can be scary... especially for the CM's working the attraction in that area.

She was probably bored silly... Mine likely would have pulled out a book halfway through the ride. :rotfl: After all, it's not like you actually get to steer.

Oy.

Glad everyone was okay! Hopefully she doesn't do that in a real car!

wow, I agree, she was bored. Well, she learned a lasson hopefully.

People hit eachother at full speed all the time, often on purpose. As long as no one was getting in or out of the car she almost hit, I doubt it could have been much of a problem. Those vehicles are made so that cars can hit one another at full speed without injuring anyone.

It always annoys the h-e double hockey sticks out of me when I see people ram each other on purpose. Mostly because there are signs leading up to the exit that say, "Please do not hit the car in front of you" AND they have the announcer lady say the same thing. And it's not like no one will see you. The CM's are RIGHT THERE!

Ugh, this girl takes it to a new level though. I can see the day when they make you put your cell in a bin before going on the Speedway because of ding bat teens who aren't thinking.

Awesome.

You just reminded me of my worst ride ever. My car kept conking out completely, and my ex thought it was hysterrrrrrrical to lag behind and then when I stopped to ram me at full speed, while I sat there helplessly in his path. And to add insult to injury, CMs kept popping out from behind bushes all along the track screaming at me to KEEP GOING DON'T STOP. Then the car completely died at the last turn approaching the unload, and I got some really huffy CM who eyerolled his way down the hill to push me up to the unload, like I was ruining his day on purpose. Super fun times.

PPs are right. While annoying, getting slammed by the car behind you, even at full speed, isn't painful (barring existing neck or back injuries in which case you shouldn't ride in the first place). I think "disaster" is overstating it a little.

With that said: Ugh. Teenagers.

That's exactly how I feel. That would've been insane if there was a crash on Speedway...

Our last trip I was sitting in my Speedway vehicle waiting to disembark when I witnessed a "crash" in the other row of cars. A woman had just lifted her toddler out of the car onto the sidewalk and was stepping out herself. She had one leg in the car and one leg on the sidewalk. The car behind her suddenly lurched forward, hit her car, and caused her to go flying. Luckily, her child was already out of the car, but she ended up with some scrapes and was clearly surprised and taken aback.

I do not understand why the use of a cell phone is not banned while driving, whether text or call, as it is in the UK.
Any driver who causes an accident in these circumstances should be treated as DUI and the should throw away the key after locking them up.

Hopefully the girl learned a valuable lesson for RP life :thumbsup2

There's no excuse for texting while driving - pull over for a minute if it's that important. And as for talking, nowadays there are so many hands-free options that I dont understand why more people don't use them.

In some states it is. But people do it anyway. In Maryland it's illegal to text and to talk on your cell phone without a hands free device. But they still do it anyway.

It is not only the teens doing this but adults also.

Like the man on his phone who hit Medusa?
