Texas woman gives birth to tiny miracle
11:16 AM CST on Friday, February 20, 2004

HOUSTON - A Tomball couple has given birth to twin girls, including one who is one of the tiniest babies ever delivered.

Dodie and Vaughn Walpole's daughters were born on Feb. 11, about two months premature. Trinity weighed 2.8 pounds at birth, and Kylie was 12 ounces.

"She will fit in the palm of your hand -- my husband's wedding ring fits over her arm and her leg," Dodie Walpole said of Kylie. "She's a fighter. It's amazing."

Despite their size, Kylie and her sister are doing well.

Though most infants born at that weight and size typically need help breathing, neither baby required a respirator.

"Everything is developed," said Dr. Rose Hernandez, a neonatologist who is treating the girls at the Woman's Hospital of Texas in Houston. "Her brain is fine, her lungs are fine, her kidney is fine, her heart is fine, everything is perfect."

After a decade of being unable to conceive, Dodie Walpole sought help from a fertility specialist. Now that they have two healthy girls, the couple is satisfied they probably won't have more.

"Two is enough," Dodie Walpole told the Houston Chronicle for a Friday story.

It's so hard to imagine how tiny she is, what a little miracle. I'm assuming it's the Daddy'd wedding ring on her arm. Holy cow.

Sending prayers for the family- hopefully everything will turn out OK for the little ones...so precious!

I saw this on the news. Isn't she tiny? She is just the sweetest little thing. She has a twin that is 3lbs. The babies seem to both be doing well.

Wow! A miracle indeed. ::yes::

I'd be so nervous around a baby that tiny. I hope she and her sister gain quickly so that they can go home soon.:)

WOW, brings back recent memories of goddaughter still in NICU in Orlando, she was 1 pound 11 ounces, not as small but still tiny. I can't even imagine 12 ounces, wow... she truly is a miracle.

I hope everything will be alright for the babies!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_5_5v.gif' border=0></a>

My next door neighbor had a baby three months early. It weighed about one pound. They called him their million dollar baby as that is what the hospital bills added up to. Fortunately their medical plan picked up the whole bill.

And, fortunately for all of them, he survived and is just fine. It took him a while to catch up to where he should be, but the last time I saw him, he was starting school.

We just saw a local baby on t.v. last night that is weighing in around 12 ounces. That one started to breathe on his own after about three days. They say it is truly a medical miracle.

It is wonderful what the medical world can do now.

WOW!! I also pray they remain healthy...

Back in 1971 my Mom had twins born at 24 weeks. A girl first born just over a pound and went down to 15 oz and a boy next born under a pound and lived the day. My baby sister is now 30 something, the shortest out of us 7 living, she is 5' 4", has bad vision due to the oxygen in the incubator she lived in for almost 2 months, hates clothes-lol, and has almost no taste buds- they never fully developed. People think it is strange that she lived way back then whent they did not have ultra sounds and had no idea she was having twins-although she did try to tell them. After 6 pregnancies you think they would have listened to her!

Truly a miracle ~ Hope everything works out well.
