..........any Texas 2nd grade teachers here? This latest story they've added is ridiculous!

For everyone else, this is a test the kids take 3 times a year. They read a list of words that places them in a story, they read the story, we time them, count their errors and ask them questions. If they make too many errors, they are bumped down a story. This is tracked so we can see the progress they make, but it ends in 2nd grade (begins in K).

The story is about koalas. In condensed form, it goes something like this:

Koalas are marsupials. This means koalas have pouches for their young. Koalas use these pouches to protect and develop their young. Koalas are also mammals. Mammals feed their young milk. Koalas have large, rubbery noses. Koalas do not drink very often, because they get most of their water from the eucalyptus leaves they eat. Eucalyptus grows only in the forest. The koalas are in danger because the forests are dwindling.

It goes on to talk about hunting koalas being against the law and other ways people are trying to protect koalas.

I SWEAR I remember my 5th grade weekly reader having similar stories to this they are expecting the second graders to read (at 90 words per minute and be able to answer the questions). That means they should be able to read what I wrote there in about 45 seconds.
