Why is it that in a county with a population of nearly 4 million people, the Texas DPS can't have more than 12 offices to process driver's license renewals?????

Out of 4 million people, 2/3 are probably drivers. At $24 a pop in driver's license fee, that's 64 million dollars in driver's license revenue every 6 years. But they have only 12 offices for license renewal.

Sheesh....

Is your record clean? You may be able to renew online.

And if you go to the office and get your renewal you have the lovely wait!!!
My ds isn't able to drive so we got him a state ID. It was actually harder to get than the dang driver license!!! And I had to stand in line for 90 minutes and stupid me did it within 2 weeks of my hysterectomy:scared1:
I will definitely renew online when it's time.
I can't bash TX too harshly though-it was worse in Ohio-the only difference was we didn't have as many non English speaking people trying to get drivers licenses:scared1:

Every other time you renew, you have to do it in person - regardless of your record. I renewed online/by mail last time. So I have to show up in person.

And none of the 12 offices are open on Saturday. Mon - Fri, 8am - 5pm. A few of them are open until 7pm on Thursday.

Another option (i think) is going to an outlying county.

I feel your pain. Lived in Houston 20+ years then moved to New Braunfels which was SO cool (& easy) to get renewals for various things...a lovely courthouse on the Plaza.

Now that we're in Austin, I think we can run out to Williamson Co to get renewals.

Nope, in Texas, as Chuck said, you can renew on line, or by mail (they just use your previous picture). We have a lot of quirky rules here in Texas!
