What do you wanna know Meg?
So, I still can't think of what to write for Liverpool... This is what i've written so far:
How to Rebrand.
Sport
A city can rebrand themselves by building new sports facilities, or updating older ones. An example can be Stratford, where they will build the London Olympic Village and the Olympic Park, for the 2012 Olympics. The Olympic Park will have 5 sports facilities. The Olympic Stadium, which will host the track & field events, the opening & closing ceremonies, and has a planned capacity of 80,000. The Aquatics Centre, which will host diving, swimming, synchronised swimming, water polo, and has an expected capacity of 17,500. The London Velopark will host track cycling and BMX racing, with a capacity of 6,000 inside, and 6,000 outside. The Olympic Hockey Centre will host hockey, and have a capacity of 20,000. There will be 2 indoor areas for Basketball and Handball. The London Olympic Village will have 17,320 beds and provide each athelete with 16m² floor space. After the Olympics is over, the Olympic Village will be converted into 3,600 apartments and the area will become a district of the Stratford City development.
Cultural Facilities
Another route adopted in rebranding a city, can be adding in cultural facilities, such as museums or art galleries. Liverpool was recently voted as the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
Technology & Science
Retail Developments
You can rebrand an area by adding in new shops, or a shopping centre. When a chalk quarry in Greenhithe was no longer needed, they built Bluewater Shopping Centre. It has a sales floor area of 154,000m² in two levels, making it the second largest shopping centre in the UK, the largest being the Metrocentre in Gateshead. It opened on 16th March 1999. It has 330 stores, 40 cafés & restaurants and a 13 screen cinema. It has about 7,000 employees and serves over 27,000,000 people a year.
Education
Schools and universities can be re-imaged or added in, when rebranded an area. An example can be our own college, *blank*, which used to be *blank*, but was rebranded as a Catholic College, starting in 2003, and ending in 2008.
Leisure & Entertainment
Most often when rebranding, leisure & entertainment facilities are added, from concert venues, to swimming centres. The Millenium Dome was originally to hold special exhibits for the Millenium. It was highly critized, and there was no use for it after the Millenium celebrations ended. In December 2001, Meridian Delta Ltd was chosen by the government to turn the Millenium Dome into a sports & entertainment centre. It was renamed as the O2, in a £6,000,000 a year deal with the O2 mobile company. It finally reopened on the 24th June 2007 with an indoor arena, a music club, a cinema, an exhibition space and bars & restaurants.
