This was on the news tonight...A study was done on how effective WORKING smoke alarms were with children.

In the tests random families with small children, up to the age of 12 I would say, non-toxic smoke was forced into homes where children were sleeping. It was enough smoke as to fill the houses and set the alarms off. As fire officials and parents watched....IN EVERY SINGLE CASE...NONE OF THE CHILDREN WERE AWAKENED BY THE ALARMS.....

They tested the children again on another night with the same results. Not one child woke up!

Doctors say that children sleep so soundly they don't hear the alarm! I think it may be time to "beef up" those smoke detectors.

Does that give you a false sense of secrurity???? Dan Murphy...ask Vince about this. See what he knows or has heard about this report. SOMEBODY needs to build a better product. Find just what it will take to wake children out of a sound sleep and get it out there....

Man......this sent chills down my spine when I saw it on TV....

I saw that Tony.....scary !

I just saw this on the World News also. You know...I have always wondered about this because my youngest dd can sleep through the loudest thunderstorms around. I've always been afraid that she would not hear the smoke alarms if they went off. Luckily, our dd's rooms are right across from ours. You are right, someone needs to pursue this and see if something else can be done.

That is scary. Were going to have to try it on the kids.

That is so scary. DH came up with an idea, make them sound like a school bell.

That's incredibly scary! I wonder if the alarms that are in most public buildings now, with the strobe-type lights and the sound, would work a little better. Maybe the combination of light and sound would get them up.

I have a cousin who is profoundly deaf, and what works for her, (for the doorbell, telephone (TDY actually) alarm clock, smoke alarm, etc) is a combination of an audible smoke alarm (her husband and 2 children are hearing) a strobe like light, and her bed will vibrate if the smoke alarm goes off. I am fairly certain this was custom designed for her.

Tony you are right! My dad is a recently retired firefighter, I am going to get his 2 cents on this. (he was on the force for 26 years)
