I worry every time I hear this on the news. When it comes to chemical and biological weapons I can't even imagine the devestation it will cause. This is some of what MSNBC says:

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Wednesday that new information on a terrorist threat against the United States “talks about an attack” but said there is no need to raise the national alert level.

Appearing in advance of a news conference scheduled later Wednesday by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller, Ridge said that some potential terrorists may already be on U.S. soil.

U.S. counterterrorism and law enforcement officials had said Tuesday that new intelligence indicates that a group of terrorists already deployed inside the United States is preparing to launch a major attack this summer. This information was described by a senior counterterrorism official, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as extremely credible and backed by an unusually high level of corroboration.

The intelligence does not include a time, place or method of attack but is among the most disturbing received by the government since the al-Qaida attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the senior counterterrorism official said.

‘A steady drumbeat of information’
“There is clearly a steady drumbeat of information that they are going to attack and hit us hard,” the official said.

At Wednesday’s 2 p.m. ET news conference, Ashcroft and Mueller were to outline an intensive effort by law enforcement, intelligence and homeland security officials to detect and disrupt any potential plots. And the FBI was dispatching a bulletin to some 18,000 state and local law enforcement agencies warning of the threat.

Beginning with Saturday’s dedication of the new World War II Memorial in Washington, the summer presents a number of high-profile targets in the United States. They include the G-8 summit in Georgia next month, which will attract top officials from some of America’s closest allies, the Democratic National Convention in Boston in July and the Republican National Convention in August in New York City.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department also are concerned about so-called soft targets such as shopping malls anywhere in the United States that offer a far less protected environment than a political convention hall.

Of special concern, the counterterrorism official said, is the possibility that terrorists may possess and use a chemical, biological or radiological weapon that could cause much more damage and casualties than a conventional bomb.

I read it this morning and it has me spooked... :(

I know it's scary. I wish they had more information. They hear all this "chatter" and yet no one ever slips up and says exactly what they are going to do?

I think they report it now because of the complaints about what they did not report prior to 9/11. I just stay in prayer, not fear, about it.

I worry about it, especially with our upcoming trip, but I try not to think about it too much. It's difficult to put it out of your mind, though. :(

I couldn't agree more with that.

Honestly I do not care to hear these anymore. I sort of understand why they tell about all these warnings, but it half way reminds me of the boy who cried wolf... I've heard the warnings for so many possible attacks so many times, that I just stop listening I guess. I see no point in worrying about life like that... if it is going to happen, it will. I won't live in fear of what could possibly happen, as it would only keep me from enjoying life the way I do now.

On my way to the Lincoln Tunnel today I saw a bus pulled over with about 15 police officers around it and a k-9 unit too. No clue what it was about though...glad they are vigilant, but I don't believe we can truly stop them if they are determined.

ITA! I do not listen to them any more either. I would be so stressed all the time. I will deal with it when/if it happens. Life goes on. :)

ignoring the warnings defeats the purpose of them.. I agree life goes on, but rather than ignoring the warnings, everyone should just try to be a little more observant when they are out and about, an average citizen, reporting something that looks out of place, just might be the thing that prevents a terrible attack from occuring...

I could not agree with you more Mickey88.

I don't live my life in fear by any means. But every time I hear these warnings, it does make me more alert. As I do know the possibility of another attack is very real.

I heard this and it does have me a little concerned... I will not stop what I am planning but will be more aware...

I am going to WDW this friday for the weekend and it will have me on my toes....

Being aware and being afraid are two different things. Fear brings panic, and that's totally non productive.

Most of us will never see or be privy to any information that will help stop an attack so sitting around worried about it is stressful and draining.

I grew up in a town where being aware of everything around you was part of daily survival. I don't know how to live any other way. But to fear it is not what I was brought up to do. Remember, that's what they want.

I know this is silly but when I heard this on the news, all I could think of was 24 where the last couple of episodes were about bio terrorism and releasing a killer virus on America...OK so I might not sleep tonight....keep thinking the DNC is in Boston this year and way too close to home!

this is without a doubt the most serious and credible warning to date..we should all be much more aware of our surroundings

I don't watch the news on a regualar basis. I can't handle all the gloom and doom. Yes, I know it is a reality and that is the world we live in, but I don't need to hear/see about every murder, kidanapping, rape, Iraq prisoner photos, etc. I am aware of these things and probably overly cautious w/ my DD.

The fact that I know that there is a 'new' terrorist threat is enough for me. I don't need all the details.

you should know the details to take this one very seriously,,
and be more aware wherever you go..

Fear, no, worried YES!!!!
My husband was right in the middle of it all on 9/11. For months after he worked on the site. He works for Verizon and had to repair all the damage done at the site. The smell, the body parts, it was horrific for him and so many others. Life for all of us has not been the same since, but especially New Yorkers who have all of this "in our face". My DH said he has seen an increase in security around the city and on his way home many trucks, vans pulled over with dogs sniffing and police searching them.(for about a week now) He is aware but living through that on 9/11, how could you not have some fear? I know he does. I know he hates working there and yes life goes on but when the threat is there and so real it's hard to have that attitude. NY is the major target and something probably will happen here again and I'm sorry but the thought of my husband being in the middle of it is scary to me.

We had a tractor trailer pulled over here yesterday. FBI, Homeland, police, etc... had this thing surrounded. It turned out to be nothing, but I am glad they are investigating things that do not look right or they get info on.

Doesn't anyone ever wonder about the West Nile Virus. A simple mesquito bite?

It also seems everytime a major civil holiday approaches they put out warnings.

Last week, one of our local tv channels in WI had a interview with Tommy Thompson who is from Wisconsin and he talked about small pox vaccinations. He said the post office and his department went into an agreement about shipping out the small pox vacinnation to areas in the country that would need them in case an outbreak occurs. He said not to alarm anyone but this is just precautionary measures to get the vacinnation to a location as soon as possible. So small pox must still be a large threat.

Side Note: Tommy Thompson said he is going to retire soon. They asked him what he was going to do and he said go into the private sector and technically he couldn't talk about it. He said it would be unethical to look for a job, before he retired. This was last week, in our news last nite and it said got Tommy Thompson got hired as a President of the University of Oshkosh. So much for ethics.

I never said I wasn't aware of my surroundings, but truthfully what should I be looking for with these "specific" warnings??? Should I be wary of a certain race because that is where "the bad ones come from" or a certain dress or religion as many people I know are? No thanks... to any of that (and no, that was NOT directed at any person in particular, but people I know in RL). I am aware of anything that might be bad for myself and others arround me. If I see someone who looks like they will "cause trouble" then I will be the first to try to do something about it. However these warnings are so terribly vague that I have NO CLUE what I could possibly look for. I have always done my "job" and if someone/thing didn't seem right I would report it, but I am sure that if something is going to happen that I will have no clue it is about to happen because I am not a trained person to find the "bad people" out there.

My true feelings are these are more of a "cover yourself" so no one can say they weren't warned. I am sure like Robin said I will not have any possible way of seeing anything "out of the ordinary"

I am not saying that people shouldn't be aware of a situation, but for the most part, this type of thing is out of my hands. If something is meant to happen, it wll and there is no way I can stop it. You have your opinons on it, and I have mine as well, and trust me anything I see will be reported... but then again after living on a major college campus for 4+ years, you learn to be aware always and don't need the news to shove it down your throat.
