Terrorist Laws = Terrorist Victory?

Terrorist try to destroy our lives and limit our freedom and liberties.

By creating laws that enable arrest and conviction without the basic liberties of fair trial and so on, it seems as if at least in one aspect of our lives, they have won.

By protecting ourselves in this fashion, we react in a way that brings us closer to their ideals.

1984 is ever closer.

How much farther can we go down this slippery slope until ascent is impossible?

Oh I agree that the terrorists have won a great deal. More and more of our basic rights and freedoms have been stripped from us. It's very sad.

I wouldn't call it a "victory", since their objective isn't to disrupt our lives, but rather to get their way with respect to their lives. They may perceive the disruption to our lives as a positive thing, out of spite, but it is a petty sentiment, and probably leaves them feeling empty, since their actual objective remaines unsatisfied.

Scary -- their little wins actually may feed their frustration and anger, which in turn inspires them to do more of that sort of thing.

The terrorists' goals are not to con us into taking rights away from ourselves.

The terrorists' goals are to kill the infidels.

Big difference.

I'm a huge proponent of civil rights and keeping the government out of my life, but if the choice is temporarily forgoing SOME of the rights to privacy and SOME of the rights to free speech (eg. NY Times publishing classified info), or being dead... I'll take a little extra government involvement.

When Ben Franklin said "Those who would forgo liberty for safety deserve neither" the world was a much different place. There were no such weapons that could wipe out millions of people at a shot and there was such a thing as "civilized" warfare (for the most part).

Even with the very subtly dimished rights that may have to occur, we STILL would have the freeest (is that a word?) society in the modern world. And, we'd be a little safer.

No one seems to mind that EZ Pass is invading your privacy. Nor do most people seem to mind that in many major cities, there are cameras everywhere. But, when the current administration wants to protect us from terrorism, then there's an outrage. Even when those "infringments" are not wide-spread (like the cameras) and only involve people whose activities are highly suspicious.

Ah, but the motto used to be "Give me liberty or give me death" now it's "What good is freedom if you're dead". At least that's what the left says.

Exactly!

Do tell. Which one of your basic rights have YOU lost??

Last time I checked, Comedy Central is still running, so we still have free speech. :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:
