Ten days of Groucho at SSR, lotsa pics

So I guess this whole ramble is to ask... would you wear the Fine Pix, not take a camera bag and take a larger bag to store the smaller camera (and the big camera when it rains?). Definitely getting an Op/Tech strap... maybe I should start wearing it on my daily walk, just to get used to it.
For a PnS camera, the Pro Strap is really overkill. Op/Tech has a whole line of straps on their web site, including straps for all different sizes of cameras.

If I was still using a PnS, I think I'd definitely go with a belt pouch - but I understand that that's usually easier with men's clothes than women's clothes. (Not that I've tried it when wearing women's clothes, but I can tell from what my wife wears! :rotfl: ) But a neck strap might be OK, too. At one point in our trip, my wife tried hanging her small PnS off a small neck strap that was originally an old Epcot water bottle strap, but I think it hung it down too far and it swung around too much.

For me, I needed a camera bag as well because of all the extra gear I was carrying.

Gdad said:
BTW- I like the idea of the pins on the camera bag! I have seen a few pins over the years I really liked but never bothered to buy them since I'm not wearing a pin thing around my neck. Cool idea!
Thanks! Like you, I didn't really have anywhere to put any. The only ones I had were a Magical Express bus (freebie from last trip) and Keys to the Kingdom key (again, freebie from last trip) and I had tried sticking them on the neck strap of the camera but was never really confident that the ME one (which had the simple stick-on pinback) would stay, and sure enough, the pinback popped off one day, fortunately nothing was lost. I still don't have those on the but bag itself seemed like a good place to put this pin and it generally shouldn't get too much bumping on the front, so it should be relatively safe.

This doesn't mean that I'm going to go on a pin-buying rampage though - too expensive! I'm actually very laid-back on souvenirs - several trips, I've come back having bought nothing. Last couple trips I've gotten a few things, but even then, I've almost had to force myself. My wife has no such problems, I think she bought at least four bags during the trip! You can tell what her big weakness is... :rolleyes1

Ha! Kind of like one of us in a camera store- right? :rotfl:

For a PnS camera, the Pro Strap is really overkill.

Oh, I wasn't planning to wear the PnS around my neck. It's credit card sized. I'm more talking about my fairly large, won't fit in a waist pack, prosumer. It's 4"x3" and weighs about a pound. It's an inch-two inches smaller than a DSLR, and about half the weight, but still bulky enough that I can't fit it in a regular bag. When I'm on vacation, I do generally use the neck strap for part of the day. Just never occurred to me to wear it all the time because it's so uncomfortable. So I do appreciate the Op/Tech strap suggestion. Ordered an appropriate strap for my Fuji this morning.

We arrived at MGM to finish up there. There were several streetmosphere CMs wandering around...

Some nice little references around MGM...

2007WDW4-470.jpg

I thought this was a neat sign.

2007WDW4-471.jpg

We stumbled across Lightning McQueen and Mater again. I've probably done more car photography than anything else so I felt at home shooting "ka-chow" as my son calls him!

The Cars appearances are run by the erstwhile "Pete Roleum"...

2007WDW4-478.jpg

We wandered over to Star Tours - I took a pass as I forgot to take my Dramamine that morning and the rides that jerk you around while you watch a movie always do a number of my stomach.

2007WDW4-483.jpg

A quick stop for lunch...

2007WDW4-485.jpg

...and then on to Muppetvision 3D. I better start a new message for those, as I have a bunch of Muppet photos to go through...

Wow! Awesome photos! Great TR too! :thumbsup2

I love taking photos too, but man mine are nowhere near as good as yours. Thanks for sharing!

PS: I'm with your wife - I wouldn't have gone on EE either, glad you got to go on it.

Thanks Mischa!

WOOO-HOOO!
You finally got to ride EE.....TWICE EVEN!!!:woohoo:  :woohoo:
Like I said, I'm pretty tenacious. :thumbsup2 That's a nice thing about a longer trip and one where you aren't in full commando mode... I was ready to camp out there until our plane left! Fortunately that didn't happen...

A side note: I'm finally done processing the photos! At least, the ones I'm putting online... 616 all told, out of total of... 2,559 taken! Plus almost two rolls of old-fashioned 35mm film (haven't gotten it developed yet.) That's actually a pretty darn good ratio, I think... and it's nice to have them done now!

Anyway, after lunch, we headed for...

2007WDW4-488.jpg

Lots of weird-o signs here...

"This trunk property of the all elephant boxing & swimming team"

2007WDW4-491.jpg

Outside... oh, sure, everyone takes a picture of Miss Piggy...

2007WDW4-497.jpg

But what about the rest of them?

2007WDW4-498.jpg

I can't quite make out the full name of this boat... "wreched" something? The rest is underwater.

2007WDW4-501.jpg

We decided that we were done at MGM so headed out... naturally more pics along the way. ;)

2007WDW4-502.jpg

We headed for the boat dock and waited for a little while, passing some ducks sleeping and some just resting.

2007WDW-456.jpg

We hopped on the boat and headed for our dinner at Le Cellier... yum! Details in the next installment...

We arrived at the International Gateway of Epcot via boat and had some time to kill, so we went through a few countries. At the toy shop in England, we found Alice and Mary Poppins. The crowd was light and while we weren't in line to see them, we were close enough that Mary came over to visit with Jack on her own...

2007WDW4-506.jpg

Wife: "Jack, it's Mary Poppins! She's perfect in every way!"
Mary: "Well, practically perfect!"

It was very cute.

We didn't visit with Alice but I did take a picture of her chess set.

2007WDW4-507.jpg

We headed for Canada and watched a little bit of Off Kilter.

2007WDW4-509.jpg

And stopped into the stores.

2007WDW4-511.jpg

We went to see the 360 movie, and as we were waiting, the host cast member came over to see Jack and spent a few minutes talking with us and playing with him. When it came time to do her pre-show spiel before you go into the theater, she made mention of him and made everyone turn around and wave, and he also got greetings during the spiels before and after the movie. It was a lot of fun!

We headed for dinner at Le Cellier...

2007WDW4-515.jpg

It was excellent as usual, and again Jack got special attention from the waitresses again. He was like the star of Canada that night!

Afterwards, I set up the tripod for some night shots...

2007WDW4-525.jpg

I did a little experimenting, too...

2007WDW4-523.jpg

And then... Illuminations (again)!

2007WDW4-527.jpg

2007WDW4-531.jpg

2007WDW4-532.jpg

With this, we bid goodnight to Epcot...

2007WDW4-533.jpg

...and headed back to our room. The next day... finish Epcot, and more Magic Kingdom! Only one full day left... the end is in sight!

Chirp chirp... chirp chirp...

I hear crickets. Anyone still out there? :confused3

It was our last full day and we started doing some cleanup. I took a photo of our DVC tree exchange tree before dismantling it (yes, it's a little crooked up top!)

2007WDW4-534.jpg

Today's day began with breakfast at Kona Cafe, mainly for the legendary Tonga Toast. This meant again taking a bus to the Magic Kingdom, then taking the resort monorail to the Polynesian. When we got there, we told our waiter that we would use it, and he said "you know that it's not a very good value for breakfast, right?" Sure, we did, but what the heck. I asked a couple questions about if we could get certainly things, and everything was answered with a "yeah, sure." He took our order, went in the back, and came back a few minutes later telling us that we only get a drink and entree. That's it.

That really is a lousy use of a table service credit! After some discussion, we decided to pay out of pocket and try to visit the Turf Club Bar and Grille at Saratoga Springs that night, since it probably wouldn't require a reservation.

The food was fine at Kona but the service was mediocre. We weren't impressed with the waiter saying yes to everything then telling us otherwise (at least he told us before the final order went in), then he disappeared for a long period of time. All in all, I'm not sure that we'll be returning any time soon. Jack did love the chairs near the Tambu Lounge, though!

2007WDW4-539.jpg

We hopped on the monorail to head over to the TTC...

2007WDW4-537.jpg

...then on to Epcot to finish up there.

2007WDW4-547.jpg

One of the first things we did was Mission Space.

2007WDW4-549.jpg

2007WDW4-550.jpg

Again I'd forgotten my Dramamine and this is a ride that kicks my butt pretty good. I've done it 2-3 times in the past and it was always more of an "endure" than "enjoy", but my wife can take it in stride, even though she can't do Tower of Terror or Expedition Everest (neither of which bothered me in the least.) It's that "get shook around while watching a movie" thing that really kills me.

So, we decided to do the "wimp" version that doesn't spin. I have to say, it's still a fairly intense ride, even without the spinning! You still get all the same movements, it's just that the g-forces aren't quite as high. Your cheeks don't start flapping but it's still definitely a thrill ride. Overall, I was surprised that it was as close to the full-bore version as it was.

2007WDW4-554.jpg

Next, we did Test Track. Here's a sort of "hidden Mickey", on the top shelf of the cabinet... (the color balance is really strange here, I just couldn't get anything that looked natural.)

2007WDW4-556.jpg

The ride was still fun...

2007WDW4-558.jpg

...and it must be the trial location for the new setup of having ride photos put on your Photopass card.

2007WDW4-559.jpg

I would expect that in the next couple years, all the rides that take your picture will have this setup. You have a certain amount of time (there's a countdown on-screen) to insert your Photopass card, which you'll then be able to take to any of the photo locations around the park, or visit online when you get home, to view your photos. This seems like a fairly good idea, as long as there's still some humans around in case you don't get a chance to put your card in the slot in time.

While we're talking Test Track... GM ought to be really embarrassed at the post-show area. It is, by far, the most shameful self-promotion of any ride sponsor on property. First you're surrounded by GM cars complete with window stickers, then you've got tons of GM-related souvenirs they want you to buy... granted, the "bird and robot" show after World of Motion was a bit of a snoozer, but it's better that just seeing a car on a platform. I dunno, the whole thing just makes me uncomfortable, it's not appropriate for a WDW post-show environment IMHO.

We wandered around the stores a little...

2007WDW4-561.jpg

2007WDW4-562.jpg

Here's another one where you can see me if you look really close! ;)

2007WDW4-563.jpg

Here's one of the more bizarre popcorn carts on property.

2007WDW-521.jpg

Over to Imagination, which is getting longer in the tooth every time we visit. This pavilion could use an overhaul, and bring back Dreamfinder while you're at it! And get rid of the skunk smell!

However, the dancing fountains are fine and should remain no matter what else changes. Jack certainly loved them!

2007WDW4-567.jpg

2007WDW4-572.jpg

(No, that's not Jack in this picture, even though he's got the same backpack!)

2007WDW4-570.jpg

We headed up towards World Showcase to make a couple quick visits...

2007WDW4-577.jpg

2007WDW4-580.jpg

We headed back to Future World and had lunch at Sunrise Seasons, then headed back out of the park.

2007WDW4-582.jpg

...arriving at the Magic Kingdom as it was starting to get dark.

2007WDW4-587.jpg

Next... last night at MK!

Nope we're all still here just enjoying the Pictures/:thumbsup2

I am loving your report, Groucho! Your pictures are simply amazing, not that it means much coming from a non-Photo Board regular. ;) But really, thanks for sharing your photographs with us.

Looks like Jack is quite the Disney boy, we have 4 little Disney-loving boys ourselves! :goodvibes

Oh and one more thing, I'm sure many people would love it if you shared your SSR pix on this thread (hint, hint!):

Whoops, I accidentally screwed up a picture above - one was displayed twice instead of having a different shot there. I just corrected it.

I hope that didn't come off that way, I do appreciate any and all feedback. Writing the TR is a lot more fun with comments/questions from readers!

I'll check it out, but I really didn't get many photos of SSR itself... but I'll see if I have anything worth adding!

This has been an incredible read/view for me! I will be dissapointed when it ends, kind of like finishing a trip myself, or finishing a good book or good movie! I have to say thank you again for sharing all your pictures and comments with us!
:thumbsup2

I found this thread early this morning and have really enjoyed reading it throughout the entire day. I've got my whole family checking out your photos. They really are incredible...so clear-it's like you're really there. You take picture of the stuff I love to look at, but never seem to have the time to really stop and look. Jack is just precious, and what a lucky boy to have a photographer for a dad! Thanks for taking so much of your time to entertain all of us. Can't wait to see more. :flower3:

only one more day? i hate to see this report end. i feel like i was traveling with you. thanks again for the wonderful photos.

Looks like we happened to be at Epcot the same day too....but we didn't get stuck on any rides there.

We also had to come home on the 9th....how sad.
