My DH is a volunteer fire fighter...his pager has been going off since 8am...the first one came in saying FIVE FEET of water in the basement (ie - will take the FD forever to pump out)

There hasn't been ONE FIRE in town...but everyone has flooded basements.

I never even knew you could call the FD for water in your basement.

and dang...there goes the sun...ah well...at least I got to see it for 2 hours today

I never knew you were suppose to call the FD either. What do they do, pump it out???? Learn something new every day!

I didn't know you could call the FD for flooded basements until last weekend, when the chief of one of the towns that got flooded here was on the news and he said that flooded basements were not their priority this time around; they'd get to them once they got people rescued. But he did say that normally they'd pump them, if they didn't have the other priorities.

I guess so.

No offense to anyone who has called the FD for this purpose...but I remember way back when my mom's washer (in the basement) flooded the wash room...we just hooked up a pump (we had one) and a hose and pumped it out ourselves...finished up with a wet/dry vac.

I always thought this fell under the category of "not an emergency - pump it yourself"...but I guess I'm wrong.

We have been opersating since 11pm last night with flooded basements. We ended up closing a major road outside the base due to flooding and over 25 cars in the parking lot were under water.
Our department is now sending pumps to the city of New london to assist them with flooding. We use portable pumps to get the water out of basements.
And yes, you can call 911 for a flooded basement. You have to remember you have your oil burner, furnance or gas water heater down there and once the water reaches it it causes a very hazardous condition in your home.
We're always here for you :firefight :firefight

Rock on fireman!
Thanks for the clarification. (I'd ask DH...but...you know...he's out pumping basements)

Did it stop raining over there yet for you? We have spotty sunshine now.

When I found the water actually running through the electrical outlets in the basement, I figured it was time to have the fire department check things out. When they arrived, they said they had been pumping basements all day. I would never have thought to call them except for the electrical danger involved. (All is OK now. Several circuit breakers had to be shut off to the affected sockets. Lots of soggy, ruined carpet and lots of clean-up but we're better off than many others.)

Call ELEVEN just came in

DANG!

thank god we A. live on a mountain and B. our house is REALLY high! (walk-out basement...very little actually "underground")

Let's all hope the sun stays out!!! We are seeing it now for the 2nd time today! We aren't wet...but the yard is pretty mucky! We now have 3 wet...muddy...stinky Newfs! If the sun comes out tomorrow it's baths all around!

A big "thank you"! to your DH for helping those in need!

omg - evidently our little 'princess' hates the rain. It's been raining since, what, last saturday? she HATES doing her buisiness in the rain.

well - I guess DH wasn't keeping an eye on how often she did #2.

last night...she did ALOT of #2...in the hallway (thank god it was on the hard wood floor!)

I'm surprised that much came out of her! (we didn't have the heart to punish her though)

Actually water in the basement can cause electrical fires, so it's a good idea to call the fire dept because they can get it done quicker than you can.

we've called the FD before, when it got really bad

still no sun here..........it's been pouring buckets alllllll last night and alllll today

We have roads flooded all over. On our way home we saw a whole section of a neighborhood closed off. The neighborhood fire department was busy pumping the street and I am sure plenty of basements out.

We did the flooded basement calls, but sure would pack up and leave for another call.

On the news lat night they had a police office tellign him to call them if then if they are flooded bad. I know certain parts on NJ and NY got hit really bad also. It sounds like its up north a little hitting you guys. I hope it passes fast. Yesterday was the first day we saw sun in over a week. It seemed like it was stuck over NJ.
