Everyone must be thinking mattresses this week!
I have a dear friend who decided to surprise her DH for his BD with a new bed and she got the tempurpedic. After three weeks they sent it back.
Despite living in a well airconditioned home and having a ceiling fan over their bed she said that they couldn't stand it. Her complaint was that the foam "holds onto your body heat" and that they would both just sweat. This would be an especially important note to all the ladies in that age range where they experience being over-heated at night.
Her DH has a bad back and while it is true that they reported "not moving around much in their sleep" his back got worse and worse instead of better in the time that they had the bed, BECAUSE he was waking up in the same position in the morning. *An average adult shifts positions an average of 40 times a night some sleep reseach shows. They were very grateful that the store they bought it from offered to trade it back for something else and they are very happy with their new mattress now.
We just bought a new mattress this week ourselves and so far, when we wake up in the morning we spend 10 minutes exclaiming over how great we slept!
We bought a Simmons World Class Farmington Lake Eurotop mattress With the individually pocketed coils. Incredibly minimal "motion transfer"! We really shopped around and did a lot of reading prior to actually making this Big Purchase! (And Never pay the price on the tag! They have plenty of wiggle room.)
I guess after sleeping on the same old bed for almost 20 years ANYTHING would have felt pretty good to us, but honestly when you go to the showrooms to try out the different mattresses, you can cross a lot of them right off your list, a la Goldilocks or The Princess and the Pea. Too hard, too soft, too high, too low, too wide, too narrow, too puffy too flat, etc.
We were able to narrow it down to just a few contenders on the first trip.
Then we looked at the technology and workmanship that went into each mattresses' manufacturing to help us make a decision and combined that with good old internet research. I shouted out possibilities at about 4 different store, finally decided on a store that carried a large variety of brands and then we made 3 trips there altogether before we made our final choice. Once me alone. Once DH alone and finally once together.
A few shopping tips: wear comfortable clothes, skip the makeup if you can, don't wear a belt, remove shoes, pagers, cell phones, don't be shy and take your time.
Feel free to really simulate your favorite sleeping position and use as many pillows to get comfortable as you do at home. Lying on a bed on your back fully dressed with one "show pillow" is NOT the way to pick out something you are going to be sleeping on everynight for the next 10 years or so! A good salesperson will give you the space and privacy you need to let you feel comfortable.
We are really happy with the one we chose.
