TEMPORARY Refrigerator Removal from Walt Disney World

We will be at AoA LM room for 3 days in Aug then moving over to BLT (we are DVC members). I really hope there is a fridge in our AoA room at that time. We will be bringing drinks with us we would like to refridgerate. I feel bad for all the guests who aren't on the Disboards! Disney should send a letter or email out to their guests about this! Maybe even post it somewhere on their website!

AoA will be completed in the next 2-3wks. Per a CM from AoA. Not sure if that is 100% reliable but I am hoping it will be by mid Aug.

Thanks! We'll be there on the 16th so hopefully it will be done by then. :thumbsup2

Back when fridges were not standard in the rooms and I was too cheap for $10/night, we would place our order with garden grocer - and include in the order 2 styrofoam coolers. They did the trick. Just filled them with ice every evening if needed.

While this stinks for WDW....it's not a make or break. Hope they are able to get it solved quick though - I am sure they will deal with some cranky people.

I agree with a pp - there is no ventilation for those fridges tucked in the cupboards - I have always wondered when one would catch on fire. I wonder if they will have to cut out a portion of the surround to let them ventilate more?

My concern is the ice machines won't keep up.

It's only recently that refrigerators were added to all rooms. Prior to that, people used coolers. I do not recall reading about ice shortages.

But most people didn't depend on coolers or know to bring them before refrigerators. Now that people are expecting a fridge and not being notified in advance that they won't have one, it could be a sharp increase in people wanting ice. I am sure they are preparing for that though.

Brought a cooler starting in 2001 based on a DIS tip. I highly doubt we were the only ones.

Unless the ice machines were removed when refrigerators were added to the rooms, I don't think this will be a problem.

It isn't like Disney planned for this to happen... there is a problem and they are doing their best fix it.... can't imagine trying to replace the 23000 just at WDW let alone the other parks.... sometimes things just happen and we need to go with the flow... it wasn't that long ago when the only places that had them were the deluxe resorts... we did the cooler thing.... your going to be on vacation... relax and have fun

Bell services at Disney resorts can keep perishables refrigerated if your room isn't ready . . .

1) Each resort has a Subzero-type fridge/freezer.
2) Storage is on a space-available and first-come basis.
3) Would be tough to store 1,000-3,000 rooms of groceries in any of those.

Garden Grocer is going to lose a fortune over this!

So glad I am staying at SSR for the week in Aug but I do move to AoA for 3 days. It is one thing if you are staying in a basic room but I will be annoyed if I paid for a suite to get breakfast/lunch stuff only to find out there is no fridge.

I read on another thread about this that GG has styrofoam coolers for sale. I bet alot of people who were planning on getting groceries are just going to end up adding a cooler to their order. I bet most people would just pay the $8 vs. days of paying for breakfasts, snacks and drinks. Problem is, they arent going to be notified before their arrival.

Colleen was saying most people have garden grocer come at their check-in time so they can unload food while unpacking. bell services holds your food for you if you are not in your room to come pick it up yet, flight gets delayed etc... This happens all the time and has been done for me twice. They store it for you and leave a message to come pick up. So if people do not know NOT to cancel garden grocer, what is garden grocer/Disney and customer going to do once they check in and are told "woops, no fridge!" I would be really ticked off that Disney didn't notify me in advance. I hope they do, or at least garden grocer should notify onsite guests. The only reason we know is because of these boards. Many don't know.

I agree that it needs to be done, will take awhile and shouldn't really be that big of deal, but Disney needs to notify their guests ahead of time that they most likely won't have a fridge so guests can plan accordingly. Breast milk, meds, garden grocer orders may need to be canceled etc... To not notify and just hand a letter at check-in, is poor customer service.

Yes so does Garden Grocer take the initiative to notify it's customers and hope people order coolers or are they going to keep hush too because they are not at fault and people will probably cancel or at least alter their order some if they know in advance. It will be interesting to see.

I believe they do have them available for medical purposes.... and I agree an email or mailing would be a good idea.... no matter what they do they will miss someone.... it will go to their spam, they will miss it in their mail... etc....

I just checked the WDW site for the Pop Century resort. They are not listing a refrigerator as an amenity. I did not check before this broke, so I do not know if it was listed before.

When they were putting the "refrigerators" into the values, there was on uproar on this site that they were being call "beverage coolers" by Disney and would not keep food cold. If they listed them as "beverage coolers" on the WDW site, before I just looked, then most guests would not be expecting to keep full meals in their rooms.

People on here know about the refrigerators and now they know they are gone. Plans do change and we need to change with them.

1) But, it is still on a space-available basis.
2) Without room fridges, the Bell Services fridge could get full quickly.

FYI - - -

1) Someone brought in a chunk of cheese yesterday morning.
2) They put it behind the Front Desk counter.
3) One of our College Program girls asked if that was for Mickey.
4) The CM said, "No. It's for the no-fridge-folks' whine".

(Only because she knew that there will those who will claim
Disney ruined their vacation for something totally our of
the control of WDW.)

I don't think you understand, no one is disagreeing. She was explaining the before scenario because people questioned why someone would order food ahead of checking in, she was not explaining what would happen now and you keep arguing about the now. We all know there won't be room now. She was explaining why/how people used to order ahead at Garden Grocer and it was never a problem. If people aren't notified in advance and order this way, they will not be pleasantly surprised at check in. Wasted food! And then it will become a "who is at fault" issue.

People around here are anal and will complain about every issue to no end. No fridge is now one of them. But there are thousands out here who book vacations and aren't being notified. It isn't a big deal to not have a beverage cooler, fridge, whatever you call it. It the fact they are not making it public very strange.
