Temperature control in staterooms

Are you able to set the temperature of your stateroom, is there a thermostat in the room? Or are all the staterooms centrally controlled to a certain temperature?

Not a thermostat, but there is temp control in each room. You have a dial and can move it a couple of "clicks" cooler or warmer. I know on the new ships it also has a Quick Cool function that gives you a more concentrated dose of cool air for a short time. We like a cool room, so we got in the habit of doing a quick cool any time we walked in the door or got up at night.

We did the same thing with the quick cool function. Worked great as we like a cool room too.

The only bad thing is that if verandah doors are left open, it makes entire blocks of cabins not be able to cool - and that includes interior cabins. There are signs all over - and our stateroom hosts told us - to not prop the verandah doors open, but there's always someone who thinks the rule doesn't apply to them (or they just want to fall asleep to the ocean, or they want fresh air...) and others suffer.

So if you have a verandah, please keep the door shut except when physically using the door.

Not really a thermostat (no actual temperature numbers). You can only change the setting "cooler" (snowflake) or "warmer" (steaming).

As noted, the base temperature is the ambient temperature set by the ship's controls for the area of each room. Leaving the verandah doors open will change that ambient temperature, causing the climate controls to be less effective.

They need to have a speaker system so you can hear the noise from your balcony without having to open the door. That would be a nice feature and maybe stop those that leave the door open from doing so.

Thanks for posting this!! I have been wondering about this myself!!

Or have a way to disable the HVAC if you want to sleep with the door open on your balcony. You say "Fresh Air" and "Sound of the Ocean" like it's a bad thing. It's a huge reason I take cruises. I love sleeping with the door open and the fresh sea air in the room. Had no idea it was even a concern!

Unfortunately, opening your verandah door doesn't just affect your room. It affects the rooms in the area of your room.

This was from one of our verandah rooms onboard the Fantasy:

I copied this from another poster who knows more about the workings onboard than I do:
All modern cruise ships are designed with many fire safety features to save your life in case there is a fire onboard.

One of those features is air pressure.

Cruise ship cabins are designed to have a slightly higher air pressure inside the cabin than outside the cabin. If there is a fire outside your cabin, the over-pressure inside will cause smoke and flames to move away from your cabin rather than move into it.

This system works great until you or your neighbors open the balcony door.

With the balcony door open, the air pressure drops in your cabin. The A/C system is designed to compensate for the lower air pressure by pulling air pressure from your neighbors' cabins into yours. This also pulls the cool air from their cabins into yours. And if your neighbors are smokers, it also pulls their smoke into your cabin.

The problem is that with your balcony door open, the A/C system never is able to compensate for the lower pressure. It keeps pulling more and more air from your neighbors, trying to compensate for your cabin. That's when all your neighbors start calling the front desk to complain that their A/C is not working properly.

A few cruise lines tried to counteract this problem by installing magnetic switches on the balcony doors. These magnetic switches automatically turned off ventilation to the cabins that left their doors open, making it safer and more comfortable for those smart enough to read and follow the signs on the door asking them to keep it closed.

Then some genius found a way to circumvent the system by placing a small magnet near the magnetic switch on the door, making his neighbors uncomfortable and less safe, but ensuring he could leave his balcony door open and have A/C at the same time.

The cruise lines gave up and removed the magnetic switches. Now you can leave your door open and ruin your neighbors' cruise without the help of the magnet.

But from someone who has been on the Fantasy in a verandah room.

You open the verandah door and the air con does stop and there are signs there to that effect!

Someone's I have to have a serious gulp at some of the things posted.

Wow, I had no idea about the balcony door thing! Doesn't really apply to me since I am in an inside room, but I can definitely see how it affects everyone when others leave their doors open. That is not good, I hope we don't run into that problem! We like our room pretty cool, so it's good to know we can adjust it, at least somewhat.

I'm surprised that sign doesn't mention it affecting other passengers. Or is that information somewhere else? I definitely would have never guessed that!

Ah but if someone in your cabin block with a verandah leaves their door open, it DOES affect you.

Yeah, it seems like it might have more of an effect (slightly? if anyone cares about others? lol) if the sign mentioned that it would affect cabins around you as well.

I'm sure I'll be fine in my room, but it would be nice if everyone followed the rules!
