I need to have 4 crowns but the cost is so high. I was wondering and for some reason I can't find a straight answer online, how long to temporary crowns last?

I am not a dentist or a dental assistant so I don't know the answer to this question.

I just through crowning 6 teeth though. :) Temps are not meant to last a long time. I had mine on 3 weeks and they stull functioned and looked very good with no breaking or falling off.

However, several years back I had 4 crowned and the dentist had me in those temps for 6 months!!! Bad idea. No, horrible idea. I never had one break but they did fall off way to often and I was super careful.

The thing is besides looks and function is the gum tissue around the crown. It is so important to keep that very, very clean. It is hard to do with temps that are on too long and because your gums with change (recede, I guess) around a temporary crown. They are just not meant for long term.

If I were you, I'd sit down with the dentist and ask him to help you with some suggestions for payment. Most likely he/she will try to help in some way. if you have temps put on and wait to long, damage will be done and you might be looking at gum surgery/treatment and alos crowns that may not do as well as they should have/would have.

I was so thrilled that I did not have to wait 6 months this go around. 3 weeks was a breeze! Good luck. Dental work is no fun and costly too but it is important to just "get it done". :)

That is exactly how long I would need them 6 months. I am going to have them put on next month, but I can't have the permanent crown put on until January. Was there a lot of pain and sensitivity?

Sometime when I was in my early 20's - I started a crown procedure, for WHATEVER reason - I didn't finish it. My memory is very fuzzy, but I know that I HATE going to the dentist, and I think that the dentist I was working with left the practice, etc. Anyway... flash forward 20 years - I STILL have that temporary crown in my mouth! I get questioned about it often - "Did you know you have a temporary crown?" Yes, I do. "How long have you had it?" 20 years. :scared1:

So... while I wouldn't recommend it - I'm sure that it would last you 6 months!

Good Luck!

Wow! 20 years. I gotta say that sounds like a great dentist if his temps lasted that long!

I still would not recommend it. I think having 4 crowns makes it more risky than just one. Are they random teeth or all together?

No pain. Why are you waiting though? Are you getting the $$ in 6 months? Ins. will cover after the new year? If either is the case, I'd really sit down with the dentist and talk about it. With 4 temps. an infection has more of a chance of setting in and, well, that is just plain dangerous. If it is for the ins. to renew and cover it, the office might be able to advise you on this and your options. My office was very good about the money to me. Mine was 10,000. and as we both know, that is a lot of money--I don't care who you are!

Don't try flying with temp crowns. When you get to a high altitude, the air pressure forces air under the crown and it hurts a lot!!!! I had to fly for work once with a temp crown and thought I'd die. I was fine until we climbed to our cruising altitude. We had a layover in Denver. On the ground, I was fine. Got back on the plane and was in terrible pain for the rest of the trip. Same thing on the way home. Temp crowns do not fit like permanent crowns.

Brenda is right. It's not a good idea. Temps are meant to be on as little as possible. They will cause inflammation and they are not molded to fit exactly. I had a temp that was killing me. The moment she put the crown on it felt SO much better.

Brenda, sounds like we are in a race for the million dollar mouth. ;)

I have all but 6 of my teeth crowned in the past decade. There is no way I could have lived for months with my temporaries. I have had sensitivity issues with each one and it was much worse when I had a block of teeth done at once (the temporaries were actually all one piece, not each individual tooth was capped). I am definitely unable to eat on temp crowns. I also had one where the perm crown got lost in shipment and they had to leave the temp in for an additional 3 weeks while a new one was being made and I ended up with an infection on that one.

Temporary crowns = temporary cement; made to come out (without doing damage) in a short time.

Permanent crowns = permanent cement; not supposed to come out.

I just had three crowns done. One was by itself on the side of my mouth I chew on the least. It was on for 5 1/2 months no problem. The other two crowns would be right next to each other on the side I chew on. They had the temps placed on both with 5 days of each other. One broke within two weeks, I had it replace and the next week the other one broke. Then about a week before the permenant crowns came in (about 4 weeks after the initial casts and two weeks after the temp was replaced) my cement came loose on the second crown. It stayed on but I couldn't chew on that side, because it shifted. I had sesitivity on the two together because they were not root canaled and the temps are not as good at covering up all the way to the gum line.

Do not trust it to last. At the very least get them done one at a time if you need to wait.

I have a "kiddie cap"(over a baby tooth that never fell out, no second tooth underneath) and it's been on for 15 years!! Never got loose, never had a problem with it.
My dentist just keeps checking and telling me "If it ain't broke we're not fixing it!"

I also have a lot of teeth with crowns. My dental insurance is horrible so I have to spread things out.

I had one temp crown in my mouth for at least 4 years. I never had any pain at all. The tooth had a root canal with a post and core. The temp never fell off. My dentist used 1/2 temp cement mixed with 1/2 perm cement. I'm not saying that this is an ideal situation but for me, it worked. I've since had a perm crown put on and things are fine.

I would talk with your dentist and explain your situation and see if he/she thinks that it's ok to go 6 months with the temps.
