A guy in the office I work at commutes 170 miles each way every day. (He commutes from Petersburg West Virginia to Rockville, MD). He goes through mountains, rough roads, heavy traffic and then through Washington area stop and start Interstate traffic. He leaves for work at 3:30 am, arrives at work at 7:00 am and leaves at 3:00 in the afternoon to beat the heaviest afternoon rush.

He loves small town West Virginia and all his family lives there but is resigned to the trip because there are few good jobs in the Mountain State.

Do you know anyone else who can beat this man's commute each day. Tell us about commuting horror stories!

Don;t know anyone personaly but I remember the BIG earthquake in SF many years and because of roads collapsing people had to commute 4 hours each way

unless this guy is making bucu dollars its not worth the money. Gas alone is like $30 Dollars a day.

Well I drive a school bus...does that count??? I drive well over 200 miles a day...lol...but I love it. Traffic and all!

I know a guy who works at the World Financial Center in New York City while his wife works two blocks from the White House in DC. They live in Delaware and have a full-time nanny for their three kids. When he took the job, the company agreed to pay his round-trip daily Amtrak ticket from New York to Wilmington, as well as to treat his food on board as a company expense. The firm really, really wanted him. He goes through most of the state of New Jersey, top to bottom, and I think it takes about an hour and a half each way on the express, two if he misses that one, and costs the company about $150 a day or so.

I had a friend who lived in Daytona, but went to Miami to work everyday. It's a 4 1/2 hour drive each way. YIKES! :earseek:

The longest commute I know of personally is a guy that drives from Harper's Ferry, WV into DC every day.

I don't understand what motivates people to commute 6-8 hours a day because they live in another town. I know jobs are scarce, and jobs that pay mega bucks are worth making a sacrifice for, but wouldn't it be better to find a cheap apartment and stay during the week? Maybe they can work from their car? Maybe they just like being in the car the same way we like going to WDW:earsboy:

I hate my 30 min commute!

Our Director of Housekeeping lives in Macon and works in Atlanta. I find that incredible even though it's about 2 hours away. He has an apartment in Atlanta during the week and only goes home on the weekends. I woud NEVER do that!

A gentleman that lives here in Plymouth Massachusetts is a pilot for a corporate jet. The person he flies lives on Long Island but they let the pilot take the plane home to Plymouth. It often passes over my house in the evening.

Wow, and I thought that my 1 hour each way was bad!!!

SO I switched and right now I'm 15 minutes away from my work, I LOVE IT!

Wow that is a bit much to drive every day! I have known some people who work one place during the week (stay there) and go home on weekends... usually temporary as they work out living/spouse arrangements.

A few years back, for about 8 months, my DH used to drive from home (Hamilton) to Oshawa. It took him 2 hours each way. He hated it...of course!!

:)

DH used to drive 60 miles each way to work several years ago. That was insane, especially in winter.

When I was in college at Clemson University (in Clemson, SC), there was a girl in one of my classes who lived in Atlanta. It took her about 3 hours to get to school. She didn't do it every day, though. She had someone in Clemson who she stayed with a few days a week and mainly went home on weekends. It was just a short-term thing for her because she married a guy with a job in Atlanta while she was still in school. I think she just did it for both summer sessions, then she graduated.

I really wonder what motivates people to drive so far to a job. If the money is that great, wouldn't it be easier to move closer to the job? Or if the money isn't that great, aren't you spinning your wheels?

When DH had his long commute, at first, he thought it was kind of fun. He likes to drive. But after the first few snowstorms, that got old really quick, and he found a job closer to home.

In the San Francisco Bay Area there are a lot of folks who commute upwards of 200 miles each way. Housing prices where their jobs are are just too damn expensive. I've known of techies for Cisco who "plane-pooled" from the central valley to work in a small plane.

I also heard of a fire fighter who lived in Hawaii and commuted to the bay area for his 3-4 day shifts. He'd usually try to double up his shifts. Of course, that isn't a daily commute. :)

My dh knew someone sho was a mailman in dowtown brooklyn (which is right next to Manhattan) and lived in Pennsylvania. He commute with no traffic (LOL) was 21/2 hours each way .

Does it have to be someone with a solitary office or do sales reps count? I live in Richmond but my territory stretches from the Roanoke/Christiansburg area in western VA to the Tidewater area and Kitty Hawk, NC. Roanoke and Kitty Hawk are each 3 hour drives one way, Tidewater (Chesapeake, VA Beach, Norfolk, Newport News and surrounding areas) is approx. 2 hours, and I rarely if ever stay overnight.

Quite frankly, I'd much rather be at home with DW Lauri than in a hotel room.

Back in the 1990s I heard about a DJ who commuted between Chicago and Dallas to do a morning show in one city and an afternoon show in the other. I did a google search, and found this bio of Tom Joyner, who did this in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Was there someone else who did this? Because I thought it was later in the 1990s that I heard about someone doing this.

For 8 months I commuted from Boston to Washington DC. Every day. I made very close friends with all the flight crews! Then I got the okay to stay there during the week so I'd fly in on Monday and leave on Friday. For another 6 months.

That was when I was young and stupid. And had far more energy :)
