I'm not quite getting DH onboard with DVC...yet. He's worried that we'll have Disney burnout and not want to go year after year. I've only seen the online video so far, so I'm still learning too.
So, have you used your points anywhere other than Disney?

TIA! :flower3:

I have been a member since 2005. I have high hopes of using my points outside of Disney, but I haven't even made it to WDW yet. I have used my points for my family at disneyland, and we are going on the med cruise this summer on points. I also gave my good friend her honeymoon at WDW with my points and 2 one night stays for birthday presents. I am now "out" of points for 2007! Like I said before though, I have high hopes of returning to hawaii after my "cruise" break, but I might just check out the rest of disney first and then use for others. This, so far, is a great vacation value for my family!
Good Luck on your decision. :)

Not really 'outside' Disney, but we used points to stay at Disneyland Paris (which included park tickets), and twice we've used points to stay at the Grand Californian, Disneyland, CA.

This year DD and I will stay at the Tanque Verde Ranch for Spring Break in April and the Marriott Ocean Club on Maui for Christmas. That being said, I'm already having Disney withdrawals!

We did the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson too, and loved it. Also, the Grove Park Inn in Ashville. Don't forget, that even though HHI and VB have the disney name, it is nothing like WDW. We go to a WDW resort about once every 2-3 years.

We have enough points (200) to give us a nice 3 trips over 2 years. Otherwise, we like to go to the national parks. So about 1 in 4 trips for us is completely non-Disney.

It has been a nice balance for us.

In addition to WDW, we've stayed at HHI, the Grand Californian, and the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. We've been very happy with the accomodations everywhere that we have stayed.

We've stayed at the Disneyland Hotel in 2000, twice at The Plaza and once at Shelburne Murray Hill in NYC and two Disney cruises. All other trips on points have been at WDW - our favorite place. I'm planning our trips for the next year and it looks like we may make it to the world 3 times between August and January! :cool1: :cool1:

Outside of WDW we have used points for:

Disney Cruise Line
Disneyland Hotel in CA
Newport Bay Hotel in Disneyland Paris
The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs
Keystone in Colorado
Kapalua Bay Hotel in Maui (no longer an option)
Tanque Verde Ranch in AZ (loved it so much two years ago, that we are going again this year)
Arizona Biltmore in AZ

Many folks will tell you that using points outside of the DVC resorts is not a good value. We, on the otherhand, use DVC as prepaid vacation accommodations, and choose to use them however our fancy leads us. We have loved every trade we have done, and may not have chosen to stay at many of these resorts if we did not have DVC.

The Plaza Hotel, NYC
The Royal Islander, Cancun, Mexico
Upcoming - Grand Timber Lodge, Breckenridge, CO

Shelburne Murray Hill in NYC!

I've used DVC points to stay at the Mauna Lani on the Big Island. This spring I'll be staying at the Grand Caymanian Resort on Grand Cayman, courtesy of my points. :cool1:

Keep in mind, DVC has a pretty robust program that allows you to use points for more than just stays at DisneyWorld. You can go to Hilton Head and Vero Beach for nice beach vacations. With more points you can cruise, go to various hotels, even go on the Adventures By Disney tours to exotic locales (Europe, South America, etc.).

And with 160 points, you can trade into Interval International for a one bedroom unit in peak season. II is "the" primo timeshare trading organization. You can literally go anywhere in the world with that. All the big name timeshare companies participate so you can use Disney to stay at Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton, Westgate and other timeshares.

I already own several Marriott weeks, so I routinely use them or II to reserve vacations. I've been to HiltonHead, Williamsburg and other places to name a few. The trouble with that ownership is that I cannot get into Disney. It's a lot easier for DVC owners to stay in Disney or go outside via II than it is for anyone else.

Disneyland Hotel twice, GC once and daughter used a trade for a week at Vail a few years agao.

I haven't traded outside DVC using my points but have extensive knowledge of timeshare trading in general. Given you have the opportunity going in to structure the best setup for you and your family, you should know there are other cheaper and better ways to get the non DVC options. If you could buy just the number of points you'd use at DVC and look to other options for the non DVC options, you'll have less stress in the long run, a significantly lower overall cost and a lot more options. My suggestion, buy less DVC points and see how it goes. Pay cash for DCL, other Disney hotels, Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection. Consider renting from other timeshare owners privately for a change of pace or even research and buy another timeshare for those off years. If you find yourself needing more points for DVC stays, you can easily add on later.

We have stayed at HH, VB and taken a DCL cruise. All still Disney, but not WDW.

We also used points to stay at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, and will be staying at the Grand Wailea in Maui during spring break.

The Dorchester London UK

Has anyone traded into any resorts in Sedona? We're very interested in going back there again. We loved the place.

We're staying at the Charleston Place in April. Been to HH and VB.
