We seem to always have had cats.
When I was younger we had Mitzi ... story on Mitzi... she used to like to get up in the motor of the family car on cold winter days. Well, one day, she got up in the motor, and my dad went to work. When my folks didn't see her they figured out what had happened, and were understandably upset. They looked all over for her. About six months later, my mom heard a faint meow at the window. It was Mitzi -- very skinny, filthy dirty, and purring up a storm - she found her way home, and it took her six months to get there.
We had another kitty named Puddles (heck if I know why my parents named him Puddles), but he was my buddy, and I spent all day long with him. My dad tells me I used to share my ice cream cone with him ... one lick for me ... one lick for my cat (hey, I was only 4 at the time).
Next, we had chocolate Siamese, and named him Coco. He was mean, though. Then we had another Siamese, Queenie - Seal Point. The best pet I have ever had in my life. She used to follow me around like a dog, and would jump in my arms when I whistled. I still miss her.... Next was another Siamese - Minga - named after a place in Spain, where my grandfather was from.
Beeper - a black and white kitty. My ex used to say Beeper for nerd, and so we named our cat that.
Our cats now are Lucky -- she's Lucky we found her, and Diamond, for the diamond marking on her head.
