Thanks to all who replied to my first thread...there's a clear preference for Dell. Since I'm not very computer savy, should I worry that I may not order just what I need since it's done online.

You might also give them a call and work with a consultant over the phone, then order it there, or go back to the Net and order what you decided upon. They are very helpful.

I would call as well.

I am not all that computer savvy, but our philosophy is to buy as much computer as we can afford, then try to make it last as long as we can. We don't add memory or components that were not originally included.

May be crazy, but it works for us!

Good luck and you will love Dell!

They are very helpful on the phone. When I was shopping I built it on the computer, then called to order. They were very helpful, they even told me I didn't need some stuff.

Ok, I can't resist. Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!!!!!

You might want to check the Dell website for any deals on "overruns". Sometimes Dell is contracted to build a number of units for a company as part of a bulk sale. For whatever reason, they occasionally have "leftovers" from these transactions, and they sell them for slightly less than you would be able to buy them if you custom ordered the exact same PC. Of course, you have to take what they have, but you might save a buck or two.

You get My Points rewards for shopping at Dell. Are you a My Points member, check it out:

Also, and not sure if it can be done in conjunction with mypoints, or if similar, but you can get 2% rebate by linking to Dell through www.ebates.com I use them for many Net purchases and get money (cash) back for linking through their site.

Again, happy shopping. :sunny:

Anyone with any experience with the refurbished ones?

We just purchased a Dell in February (Valentine's gift) and are very satisfied with it. My husband called and got everything put on it so I can't help you with that. Good Luck!

We just ordered a Dell for my daughter on Sunday. They had a great deal advertised on the back page of the "Parade" magazine in the Sunday paper. It's for her to take to college in the fall. I was amazed that we could get a computer that she was satisfied with at a price that DH found acceptable.

THEN, IT WAS DELIVERED BY UPS YESTERDAY!! Barely more than 48 hours after we placed the order!

DD has it all set up already and is very pleased. The only "surprise" was that it does not have an "A" (floppy disk) drive! I guess you're just supposed to save everything on CD/RWs?? It makes sense, but was still a surprise to us.

Good luck on your decision.

Yes, it appears an A drive will be an "add-on" in the future. For right now I think that stinks. If you happen to be using a computer without a writable CD drive, then you have no simple way to copy a file to the A-driveless machine.:(

And if the one you're using DOES have the CD-R drive, then you also need a BLANK CD, which IS harder to come by than a floppy....AND you can't format it!

I noticed that about the new computers.....and although the cost of an a drive is minimal....you still have to be aware it's an extra.

If you still feel you need a floppy drive, it can be ordered when you order the machine. Dell research shows they are almost never used, but if needed, can be supplied at a very low cost. Like cigarette stuff in some cars today I guess. I never use mine anymore, just the CD.

Just got a refurbished Dell a few months ago. The only thing wrong with it is that it has a dent in the side. At the time they were offering free shipping and $100 off. I did not need a monitor so I only paid $345 for the PC. I don't tink you can beat this price anywhere. It took about five days for the PC to arrive.

The refurbished inventory on the web site changes constantly. So check back frequently.

It is being shipped right now. I will let you know how it goes once I get it!

I have three computers, all DELL and I have not had much trouble with them , but last week one of their reps made me do some tests , and told me after all that , that my hard drive was gone. The next day I had another hard drive at home and this one is upgraded , but the surprising thing is that the old one was NOT dead, my husband got it working again.
We sent it back though because if it's starting to go , then it's time for another one while it's on warranty.
We are thinking of getting another one within the next year and yes you guessed it , it will be a DELL. I had IBM before and I had nothing else but problems.

love my Dell ! Got it last July after my crappy Gateway died after 18 months. I hated that thing. Anyway, no problems at all with my Dell.

I do believe that computers are like cars though - you can have 100 of the same make, model and year, and a few of those will just be awful while the others are perfect.

Dh has a no name computer (Pionex - from qvc) and has only had to replace the CD rom drive on it in 4 years. No other problems.
