We usually rent a locker for our passes, camera, extra money, etc. We have always brought our own towels. Not that there is anything wrong with renting, I just never have. We usually stake out some chairs for our towels, suncreen, coverups etc and have never had a problem. With that being said, we don't leave anything there that would cause too much of a problem if it was taken.

...does anyone know how it works when surfing is done if we want to stay for the morning in TL? Do we have to leave and re-enter when they officially open? Or can we hang out?
