What kind of a finish do you have on your home's ceiling?

Smooth? Orangepeel?

My builder is asking and I'm :confused3.

Help!

We have smooth finish. I don't really like the orange peel or stippled ceilings.

Our house was built in 1965 and we have the typical "popcorn" acoustic ceilings for that time period. I know they're not fashionable now but I'm fine with them.

We have sheetrocked ceilings. The bad thing about plain ceilings is that the acoustics stink. If I were doing it again, I'd do something different.

In another house we had ceilling tiles that were made to look like painted wood. I liked those a lot. The tiles were probably 6" x 3 ft. We bought them from Lowes.

We have sheetrock with regular smooth paint on them. I really hate the "popcorn" type ceilings- my dad did them once back in the 70's when they were "in" (if they were ever really "in" lol) and man what a jon when you want to go back to normal paint- the scraping and mess is unreal, easier just to resheet rock I think!!

They are textured (like someone just started dabbing a sponge all over) and they suck! Hard to clean, as they make a mess each time, and will be a pain when we want to repaint.

Go with a smooth finish of some kind. We have popcorn and HATE them. We have them painted to coordinate with wall colors so that helps hide the popcorn some (our downstairs is a light tan to go with the dark tan on the walls for example). Orange peal will hide nail pops better so that would be an option too.

Our ceilings are tongue-and-groove cedar painted white (still wood-colored in the living room only).

I'd go with smooth.

Most ceiling were done with the popcorn ceilings because it hides nail pops and any imperfections where seams my be.

That been said in our basement that we just finished we did knock off. Not sure if that is the orange peel people are talking about. :confused3 We were going to leave it smooth but you could see some seam lines. Knock off is quite pretty with a smooth line along the edge to border it.

Kitchen and bathrooms are always smooth.

Orange peal is similar to knock-down.

Go with a smooth ceiling and use a flat paint so that the ceiling pulls upwards. Too many people use a eggshell or even semi-gloss on a ceiling which means the slight sheen will lower the ceiling. Only 14 foot ceilings can support sheen, texture or decoration.

I have 8' ceiling (because they are my preference so that is a hint that will be helpful hossll.

Knockout! That was the other one I could not think of.

I think I will try to google knockout and orange peal and see if I can tell a difference.

So many people are doing the walls and the celings with these finishes and I think the builders like it because the wall doesn't need to be smooth and "perfect".

Thanks for these opinions so far. I am taking them all to heart.

Our old house had "chicken pox/popcorn" ceilings on the second floor (flat on first). We hated them and refinished them ourselves to flat. Turns out there were no nail pops or major problems to cover up, but it was still lots of work stripping and painting them. Also, before we redid them, there were a few spaces that had been hit by furniture and knocked off. We never could find a good product to reproduce the popcorn over those spots.

Our new house has all flat ceilings. Lovely.

We have smooth ceilings in the kitchen, mostly for clean-up purposes. I figured, with my cooking skills, there's gonna be some sauce or batter up there at some point! :rotfl:

But in the rest of the house, we have textured ceilings. They're "stamped" in a starburst design -- does that make sense? I really like them.

Our builder advised us not to do smooth ceilings throughout the house, simply because they're more expensive.
