I'm a WDW vet but have never been to DL. We are heading out for 2.5 days at the end of July. I don't want to do a sit down meal but should I do the picnic lunch?

We did picnic once and it was nice - especially good if you don't want to deal with the hassle of getting a FP early....

Only reason to get picnic lunch is if you're not going to be at DCA when the park opens to get early FPs. IF you're gonna be in the park anyway - get the free FPs.

I just want to stress that you definitely don't have to get there at opening to get free FP's. That's how it was the first couple of weeks that WOC existed 18 months ago, but it's nowhere near that way now. You can still get free FP's well into the afternoon.

Sorry, I guess I meant Blue FPs. The Blue FPs were definitely gone before 11am. The picnics give Yellow as I understand it and the reserved dining the center spot.

The picnics do give yellow, but in August I was able to get a yello FP for free at 6 PM. Blue FP's can be picked up for free in the morning, or by reserving a sit-down meal package at WCT for lunch. Preferred viewing is through dinner at Ariel's or WCT dinner packages. I just wanted to avoid people thinking that they MUST buy a picnic if they can't be at DCA at opening because the truth is you can get free passes well into the afternoon.

Is this true even when there is only one showing of WOC.

That has been my experience. Weekends and holidays, obviously, will go more quickly (but those are usually the days there are two shows). Obviously the sooner you pick up the pass, the better, but don't think you have to make a run for it at rope drop to see the show, because it's not like that anymore :)
