Tell me about Wawa

I just read that our city is getting a Wawa. I've heard of them, and have maybe even been in one, according to my kids. Every year, we travel from North Carolina to New York/New England--I've been in a ton of rest stops of varying quality, and they all pretty much run together.

One of my kids mentioned that some people go nuts over Wawa, so I'm asking--what's the deal?

Food and coffee. I have one walking distance and even though gas is higher, people flock.

Their food (subs mainly) is pretty good and cheap.

Its just a gas station that also sells sub type food. You order on a kiosk. Now, if it was a Buc-ees thats different. Those are massive gas stations (that ban tractor trailers) that also sell fresh BBQ, snacks and touristy stuff and also have very large clean restrooms.

And you can pay for fuel at the pump using the mobile app (same with Sheetz) and Wawa had a special offer during October 2022 and currently doing it again until May 2023 that paying for fuel with mobile app gives 15¢ per gallon discount.

We have Wawa and Sheetz everywhere in our area, we think Sheetz has the better app and Wawa has the better food.

ETA - and to echo PP's observation, the coffee at Wawa is far better than at Sheetz.

Their soft pretzels are wonderful! We enjoy them with mustard, Philly style!

I'm from Maryland. We have different camps here, there's Royal Farms, Sheetz or Wawa people. I'm a Wawa person. It's all about the cold made to order subs. I get lunch there about once week. Every flavor of chips too. The bathrooms are usually in good shape if you're road tripping.
I have all three within a mile of me now. I'm with you that Wawa is the best of the three. I'm not a RF fan. They can keep their chicken 🐔

We have been disappointed in their chicken as well. Dry.

DW also refuses to go to Royal Farms, says the coffee is the worst.

I didn't know that about trucks! Thanks for posting that! Although, DH can't take the general masses either lol.

I second the Buc-ees phenomenon! My husband from NJ swears WAWA is the best thing ever. I grew up with 7-11, but not all 7-11s are created equal.

I don't recall seeing a Buc-ees along our route, but definitely saw Sheetz. We aren't familiar with the route enough to have specific stops along the way, although we usually do Cracker Barrel for lunch--once a year is enough for me with that, although the kids are fond of it.

I will pass on the coffee/pretzel info to my interested family members. I don't drink coffee. I do like a good sub, though.

It’s a tradition to stop at Wawa with my kids after their braces appointment to get a frozen drink. They either get a matcha smoothie or a milkshake. There’s not really one convenient to where we live so we don’t go there regularly.

I think Wawa is a Philly-region thing (or it started off that way). They have good hoagies. DH and I love their tuna hoagie.

Wawa are your local gas stations with made to order food/drinks. Don’t know what your local ones are. I am in Atlanta area and we have RaceTrac and Quik Trip (QT). I grew up in Pittsburgh so we had Sheetz. Philly on the other side of the state is Wawa country.

Bucees is a different story sort of like a big Pilot Truck stop without the tractor trailer trucks. They started in Tx and are working their way into Southeast. They are more to be on the interstate where there’s a lot of land because they are huge. By me there is one about a hour north of Atlanta on I-75, there is one on I 20 by Talladega AL, one on I75 in Fort Valley Ga just south of Macon. They are building one in Ocala, FL of I75 , which will be 3rd on in Florida other ones in Daytona and St Augustine off I 95.

983 Wawas in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, and Florida. About 775 also sell gasoline.

The 1000th store will be opening this summer, but it’s uncertain which location will achieve that milestone.

North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama are in the future.

Thanks to all who patronize Wawa. For every cup of coffee, hoagie, or whatever you buy I get like 1/10,000 of a cent in my profit sharing.
