Tell me about using a Blackberry @ WDW!

We were looking at iPhones to use at Disney, but too expensive, so on hubby's corporate plan, he can get a Blackberry. Rogers' employee explained that Blackberry's are so much better for data transfer. Is this true?

We want to get some wait time Apps, send emails/photos and check weather.

Anything you can tell me about your Blackberry would be great! Tiger :)

No personal experience with the Blackberry but I believe they do use bandwidth more efficiently. I was told the same thing by Rogers people then I noticed they were all carrying iPhones so I ended up getting one for myself!

Lots of those apps for the iPhone, like "Lines" from touringplans.com. I love my iPhone for this reason.

I'm sure others will be along soon with more Blackberry specific info.:)

Dh has a blackberry for work. He likes it okay (except that it's a tether and once you have one you're working 24-7, even at WDW!!!)

The Disney apps are all Apple apps only for iphone, and *I think* some of them can be used on an ipod touch.

The only thing to watch for, as with other mobile devices, is the roaming charges while down in the states, both for the phone and data (which I believe e-mail falls under). It may be more efficient, but you may want a handle on that before heading down so there are no surprises for you when you get back.

How true! When the iPhone first came out a guy from Edmonton was on holiday in Mexico and he came home to a $6000 bill.

Most carriers have US voice and Data plans that are really cheap considering the above. I have Rogers and the US plans I pre-bought for our Xmas trip worked like a charm.:)

DH and I used Blackberrys on our last 2 trips to WDW. We had no problems whatsoever in terms of speed of access & communication time.

But. To save $, we did not call or email each other. Instead, we stuck strictly to IM only. Worked just fine that way and avoided extra fees. There were some small "dead zones" (mostly in Epcot. Don't bother trying to IM in the waiting room for Crush - all those tanks!), but for the most part we were able to stay in touch quickly and easily.

Dh and I both have bb. There is a setting where you can turn off roaming on the phone. We just pin (bb messenger) each other when down there as it is free to pin (bb messenger):thumbsup2

Thanks all - we are in the process of researching, so this is helpful.

To those who have used BB @ WDW for emails and photos, and checking weather or wait times, did you find it cost a lot?

Thanks, Tiger :)

I have a BlackBerry Tour from Bell and when I am at WDW I always purchase this Call USA plan, which gives me 100 minutes where I am not charged any roaming fees. Plus I also purchase a USA texting plan that gives me 100 texts so I am not charged 60 cents, because my unlimited texting plan is not good while I am in the United States. However they don't have any plans like that for e-mails so I am charged roaming fees whenever I need to write one, although not sure how Rogers is with that. Plus if I were to go on an app like Maple Leafs Mobile I am charged roaming fees since it's considered to be internet access, so once again I am not sure how Rogers deals with that.

Not sure what Rodgers plans are like, I'm on Telus. but before I go to the US, I add on a US plan for calls, and data or it's really expensive with Roaming.

Thanks everyone - my husband's corporate phone rep called him back, and once we add a data plan, we have to pay the system access fee, so no go.

Currently, we get all fees for free, as part of his corporate plan, so no reason to cost ourselves money just to use it at WDW.

We don't even use our cell phones here at home, so this toy would have been for WDW only.

Thanks again for all info, Tiger :)
