Tell me about the Royal Family 5k

I did the bus last year from ASSp and it was easy. Not nearly as big a crowd as the half, so don't worry about that. I walked up and on my bus right away- no waiting. I think I left at whatever time "they" suggested on the race info. It was between 5:30 and 6 when I got on the bus.

If you drive, I think you want to be in the parking lot by 6:15. You really should get there earlier though- it's a big party!

Took the bus back home to ASSp as well. Easy!

We are running the Royal Family 5k this year and this thread has been so helpful! Thank you!

I ran my first 5k this past weekend and really enjoyed it-- it sounds like the Royal Family will be even more fun!

If you want to find your true pace, don't run at Disney. There's way too many people, the stroller pushers will mow you over, and the "medal" is cheap rubber. Nobody lines up at their real pace, I was running over 3 year olds that were in the first wave at marathon weekend.

I wish they had lanes for the people who want to stop and stare and get pictures with characters so they wouldn't stop dead in front of me.

I've run MANY 5Ks that were billed as family races. Disney's was the worst and way too expensive to do again.

Just checking in again. I realize this will not be a true 5k "run". I have decided my goal is when my feet are moving, I will be jogging/running. I hope that while I wait for the pictures, I can catch my breath, and start back up again.

For those who are dong the 5k, what are you planning to wear? I was planning on just shorts and a top, but now wonder what else I might want or need? (I doubt I really "need" anything for this race) I have black sleeves I might wear also. I thought about a tutu over my shorts, but don't know if I would like running in that.

Also, how many 5k people are planning to do the ToT run or the 5k that weekend? I will be there and at a min. will be doing the 5k. I really want to do the ToT, but 10 miles scares me! :scared1:

I did the Halloween 5K last October. It was my first race ever...I felt the same way. It was great!

It ended up being SO much more than the race.

Enjoy the expo....it was fun....and, I met SO many people. Great to hear how all prepared.

The buses are REAL early, true. The excitement level.....makes it all ok. Getting off the bus and seeing all the people and hearing the DJ was awesome....I never planned on that.

Also....go see as much as you can of the TOT 10 mile! I went to watch/see all I could of the Wine/Dine 1/2.....it is an inspiration and very motivating! I am going to run it this year....never thought I ever would even consider it!

Enjoy it all.....it;s all well done.

I'm keeping it on this thread, since I dono't know where it should go...

I saw someone's blog (and I am pretty sure they are here on the boards about how to tie wings for when you run. I remember the concept, but wanted to share it with a friend. Does anyone know who that is?

I don't know if this is the same blogpost, but this is the wing wearing post I've read in the past.
http://www.according-to-kelly.com/2012/01/how-to-wear-wings-while-running/

Also, I wouldn't be too scared of the 10 miler. I'm sure Jeff will be encouraging everyone at the 5k to think about training for a 1/2 at Disney. He successfully talked my mom into doing the 1/2 last month when we were there for the Royal Family 5k last year.

Hello. I'm post here because I'm not sure where else to post. Thank you for this thread - DH and I signed up on FRIDAY to participate in the Royal Family 5K in three weeks! Ack! But we're going to walk every day between now and then to prepare for it, and hopefully get some jogging in there, too. We walked briskly for 4.5 miles around (and around) Epcot's World Showcase yesterday in our first training walk...hehehe. I downloaded C25K app on my iPhone and am going to follow that plan for the 3 weeks...regardless of how much jogging I can do, I'll be able to do more than I can today! We've been talking and talking for years about doing it - so Friday I just decided to stop talking and sign us up! I'm going to JoAnn's today to get tulle for a tutu...and I got my tiara yesterday at DTD. By gosh, I'm doing everything I said I would if I ever ran this thing...I know a 5K isn't a big deal to 'real' runners, but to me, this is everything! (And I hope it will be the start of training for next year's 1/2!) Anyway, I just wanted to post and say hi, and thanks (and I've got my fingers crossed everyone is right that the sweepers are generous in this 5k). I hope I see some of you there! :goodvibes

You and I have something in common...I have always loved the "idea" of being a runner, but never thought I could do it. DH surprised me with a belated anniversary trip in Jan. and after seeing everyone with Marathon medals, he encouraged me to sign up for the 5k. This is my first race also. I am doing the c25k program, using the 5k101 podcast and Robert Ullrey's. (both on itunes) They differ on how they progress, so if you choose to follow one, listen to both. I had to switch back to Robert's because the 101 had week 5 jogging for 8 mins and though I probably could do 8, I need more of a recovery time.

I also want to train and someday do a 1/2. I am hoping that by the time the 5k is here, I will feel sure enough that I can do the ToT and sign up for that. I really want a medal from that race.:thumbsup2

Keep up the good work! You can do it!!:cool1:

For those who are dong the 5k, what are you planning to wear?
It'll totally depend on weather, as far as clothing goes; I'm Floridian and chill easily! I have a running skort and could just wear tights under it if need be. I'm undecided on a tiara - I have one, but don't know if I really want to deal with it or not. We'll see.

I'm considering it... it'll really come down to finances, though, since I've already got the Royal Family and Everest Challenge lined up. We put in 4 miles this weekend and felt GREAT - I know I could have done a few more miles, so 10 by Nov. seems totally plausible!

Also....go see as much as you can of the TOT 10 mile! I went to watch/see all I could of the Wine/Dine 1/2.....it is an inspiration and very motivating! I am going to run it this year....never thought I ever would even consider it!
:thumbsup2 I have to echo this - we've wound up at WDW during a few halfs/fulls and it's soooo inspiring to watch and cheer for the racers!

:goodvibes I feel the same way - this 5K is a big deal to me, and definitely the doorway to more!

Stitchfan, thank you! That is the blog I was looking for.

Next question: how do you travel with wings???:confused3

Thanks PrincessV for the info on what to wear. I bought some running shorts, but they tend to get bunched up and I don't like that, so now I am leaning towards longer shorts under them or just the longer shorts. I bought a skirt, so the capris might be enough.

This will be my first race ever! I'm excited and a lil nervous lol...

what are the "dreaded sweepers" that are absent from this race?

I have the same problem with loose running shorts - hate that! I started walking/running in fitted, capri-length yoga pants and it was a much more pleasant experience, so now, aside from a skort, all of my running bottoms are tights/capris/long, fitted shorts. :thumbsup2

My first, too - I'm sure it'll wind up being a great experience! :yay:

The sweepers are the folks who pull racers who aren't keeping up with the required pace (16:00 mile) from the course.

Capri length yoga pants are my racewear of choice as well! :thumbsup2

God bless those of you whose thighs don't touch...or rub. :rotfl:

I have wings that I bought for a tink outfit that never came to fruition. If I did travel with the wings I would put them in my carry on and just bend them gently where I needed to to make them fit. The wings I have are wire and not plastic though (think wire hanger with lime green stocking over.) You can always carry them on if they won't fit in a bag ;)

I would also recommend fitted capris if you are having problems with shorts. I wear a running skirt when I run because I hate bunching, but layer capris underneath in cooler months. I probably don't need the skirt over the capris, but it helps me feel a little less exposed when I layer.

I found some right above the knee fitted shorts in my drawer and wore them under the running shorts and it was too hot. Last training time I wore just the longer shorts and it was much better. So longer shorts or capris seem like the best choice forme. Thanks! Does fabric matter? I have cotton, moisture wick (so they say), but I have seen some that are more nylon than cotton.

Also, since you been so helpful: tell my about socks? I have always bought cushioned cotton, but advertised as moisture wick socks for my trips to Disney, but was reading that cotton socks are not good for running. :confused3

Welcome to everyone who is following this thread. Feel free to ask your questions too. :thumbsup2

So does that mean if I'm over 16mile I still will get to finish and get my metal? I'm soooo close to making time but I just can't seem to get there!

Also, since you been so helpful: tell my about socks?
Oh no, you opened the door - I've been dying to tell the world about my new socks, lol! Somewhere I read of people raving about Smartwool brand socks, swearing that they A. provide great cushioning/support and B. are so much better than cotton for keeping feet warm in cold weather, cool in hot weather, and as dry as is possible. So I added a pair recently when I bought new running shoes online... O.M.G. I never knew it was possible to feel such love for socks! :rotfl: For real, I don't want to run in anything else. Wore them on a chilly day - kept my toes warm. Wore them on an 80-degree day - feet never felt overheated. And folks were right-on about cushioning and support. :thumbsup2 I still use my cotton socks for short runs, but it'll be Smartwool all the way for anything over a couple miles!

I have no experience, but from what I've read here, it sounds like they'll be pretty relaxed about the pace for the 5K. Still, we've been aiming for under a 15:00-mile, just to make sure we'll have time for picture stops.

My mom and I finished with about a 16:30 pace last year and didn't see any sweepers. In fact, people were still finishing when we were walking to the buses about 15-20 minutes later! Definitely a laid back race, so no worries if you aren't at a 16 min/mile pace yet :goodvibes

Thanks PrincessV for the sock info. I will look into them.

I have had a change of plans and now will have to drive to the race. Does anyone have any idea how early I need to leave? I will be at Bonet Creek.

Also, (I might need to ask at the 1/2 thread) I have to return the rental car to the CCC on Sunday, by 1:30. I would like to get it there as early as I can, but don't know enough about the road closures to know if they will have any be an issue. Does anyone have any ideas?

The 1/2 people received an email from Run Disney. Did anyone you the 5k runners receive anything? I was able to follow the link they shared on their thread to get my Wavier, but I didn't actually get anything personally.
