Tell me about the Mickey Lamp Post!

I just read a thread talking about a Mickey lamp post, and I have seen a few pics with the lamp post in them.

So, tell me how to make one.....or, tell me, so I can show DH (or my Dad, since DH is not handy!) so that I can have them make us one. I think that would be cute to put out at any camp ground!

Try searching this forum. You might be able to dig it up. Otherwise, maybe someone else can provide the link. Thought I had it bookmared, but I don't guess that I do.

CDNCruiser's instructions are great, I used them about a year ago to make mine. I did make a few tweaks though one was using 8in globes for the ears instead of the 6in, just a preference...

Anyway seeing this thread reminded me I needed to thank CDNCruiser for the instructions. Thank you!

On another note CDN Cruiser, I found your link on here one time and have to tell you I always enjoy your trip reports that you and your wife do, ya'll look truely happy! Thanks again!

Yep, THANKS for the instructions!! I made one also doing something very similar. I also made the wire Mickey Head with rope lights last night!!

I agree, I just recieved his instructions and they are great!!!!!! I am also doing the 8 inch globes for the ears, all cut out just waiting to glue.

My husband made one for us and one for our folks -- we take ours everywhere camping, not just at the Fort! We love having that little piece of Disney with us on each trip and the mickey head end of the post rides safely on our bed between our pillows!!

My sister bought most of the components to make a Mickey Lamp post for our upcoming July trip. CDNCruiser's instructions sound great and we look forward to starting this project!

Any ideas on the best way to cut out the ear holes if you don't have a hole saw?

I use a dremel tool with a cut off blade and then custom fit my fittings for the ears with a sanding drum. However, mine is a lot different than most since it has lights in each each and the head which are isolated from each other so I can change the colors and not have them bleed over. Mine is also on an electric eye, a completely detachable head and a water proof receptacle also on the eye to plug it things like Xmas garland that we use in our Xmas setup.

Below is a pic of the one I made for our home in it's Thanksgiving color:

And in Xmas mode this last Xmas at FW:

Next Xmas I will see what a green head and red ears look like.

Thanks and if anyone is interested I have all the pics, how I made it and where I got the various parts in THIS ALBUM. Last year at FW I just had it sitting in front of the awning like in that pic and one A.M. while taking the dogs out on those expanding leases I didn't have it locked and our "ratter" Yorkie took off and knocked the light pole over and it did a "FULL NELSON HEADER" onto the concrete and broke the head and one ear and for the rest of our stay I just had a "MICKEY EAR" lamp post Now I have a way of ensuring that can't happen in the future so live and learn and that cost me another $50 for two more 12" globes.

How do you keep water from collecting in the lamp base? It looks like there are holes in the supporting ring. Mine fits close, in a 4x3 adapter, but still gets water below the socket. The socket is elevated in the globe, so no elecrtical problem yet. Some have suggested a large gasket for that joint. Just wondered if you have a problem. I have the materials for a second lamp and want to avoid mistakes from the first one.

I think you are talking about the white metal base that the head attaches to and if you look at the below pic there is a hole right where the base goes up for water to drain out of the base. The hole is at about the 10 o'clock position. I did install gaskets on the ears since they are removable just to cut down any water getting in there and draining into the head. Also, when I redid the portable head for the trailer, I replaced those candelabra sockets for regular sockets so I could use the common CFL that come in colors and I use the 13W versions.

If you use the "Globe Fitter" described in my instructions there is no water problem. The fitter has drain holes in the bottom and any water which seeps in drains right out.

I've had mine for four years and it's gone through many thunderstorms with no water accumulation.

Somebody had 8 or so of these that we saw on our recent trip to FW and they made them change colors-purple, blue, green etc. I would like to know how they did that. Anyone have any idea.
