Thinking of going there for lunch instead of dinner, what is the good, bad and ugly on lunch only.

I have to be honest. I love Mexican food, but don't think San Angel is that great. The food is average, and the seating is way too crowded. The one thing it has going for it in my opinion is the atmosphere. It is a pretty cool setup, with the indoor ride and the "outdoor" ambience.

I may go back some day, but probably not for a while.

I agree with the previous poster. If you are set on going there, then lunch is pretty much the same as dinner. I'd probably do lunch.

I hate to sound negative but GROSS, I would skip it. If you really want mexican food, try to cantina outside. The food is a little better than inside.

Oh man what am I gonna do? DH wants to try it for lunch, he said the menu sounds interesting with the corn soup and the pork with corn tortillas and stuff...

We ate at the outside CS twice and it was so gross we had to throw it out.

Another place he wants to try for lunch is Sci Fi.....why is he picking all the places that get negative reviews??? :(

Nicki, we had lunch at Sci-Fi and it was fine - we just stuck with burgers and boozie milkshakes but it was quite tasty and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. Not a place we'd go back to all the time, but certainly fun for lunch (I think it's overpriced for dinner).

So just as you are replying to my post I am reading your past reviews of Sci Fi! I am so going to order those booze concocted shakes and I dont even like shakes!

I guess I shouldnt complain, DH is really getting into this ADR thing with me but he is messing with all the plans that I already have! Can you believe he actually said to me, "Is the food there good for pictures?" Oh boy do I have this kid trained!

Hope it helped a little. The milkshakes were great, and that's not something that Jay and I typically like to order, either. But they really hit the spot that afternoon. :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: That's great!

Jay and I were out at lunch today and I said to him, "I wish I'd brought the camera so we could take pictures and post a review of this place on the blog."

And Jay says, completely serious, "We can use my cell phone."

Bless his heart! We didn't, but I considered it for a moment. :lmao:

It's the mark of a good man that he wants to encourage you in your new hobby. He lurves you! :goodvibes

We like San Angel for lunch! It is a nice cool break!:rotfl2: We think the food is pretty good also!:rotfl2:

I have to agree. We were a bit apprehensive after reading negative reviews but we really enjoyed our lunch there. I'm not crazy about mexican food so I ordered some sort of chicken and cheese dish that was delicious. The atmosphere in there is terrific too. Our adult DS was celebrating his birthday and was wearing the birthday badge his fiancee' made him wear. Our waiter must have seen it because at the end of the meal he came with three other waiters singing and clapping carrying a dish of ice cream with a candle in it. They placed a napkin made into a crown on DS's head. It was hilarious. I think his red face lit up the dark restaurant. If your DH really wants to eat there give it a try. You may be like us and actually enjoy it.

I think you need to think what you are comparing good Mexican food to. We went there on our Honeymoon 10 years ago and loved it. We also went back for dinner 18 months ago, and loved it. We have another ADR set up for this trip for lunch.

I think there are different regions of Mexican food, so you have to take into consideration that this is supposed to be authentic. I grew up in California where Mexican food is served with shredded beef and is more tomato-ee, and then moved to Texas where Mexican food is served with ground beef and is more Tex Mex- more chili based. I live in Utah now and every one "swears" by the Mexican food here, and honestly, the best Mexican food here is Taco Bell. So I think it really depends on what kind of Mexican food you are expecting and used to. I personally love San Angel Inn and it is one of our favorites.

I have to agree. I love the "Mexican Food" here in Texas and realize it is different every where. I'm sure different regions have their own unique flavors just like people's accents.
We were in Utah (Moab) last summer and every one we talked to swore by a particular restaurant. We were very unhappy with it compared to what we have here. I know when we try San Angel in a couple of weeks, I am going in with an open mind and no expectations of comparing it to Tex-mex.

Whew! I was expecting to get a little back lash from that comment. It is nice to see people have the same understanding! I was born in Texas, raised in California and moved back to Texas and lived there another 10 years before moving to Utah. And "MAN do I miss me some Mexican food!" When I fly back to Dallas, I eat Mexican every meal. People just don't understand. :) My mom and I will fly to Los Angeles just for Mexican food. I would say that I am pretty open for Mexican, and I have eaten Mexican in some hole in the wall places, and sometimes it is great, and sometimes it is NOT. But San Angel Inn is one of our favorites. My brother, who lives in Colorado (again, not a great place to get Mexican food), is dying to go there and was on the list of must dos while in Epcot. So I really think it depends on what you have been exposed to and are used to. But my mouth is already watering for a margarita. WOO HOO  :cool1:

LOL I'm from NJ and have been wary of making going there based on the negative reviews. Guess I will try it out next trip. Can't beat the atmosphere!

We did not like San Angel Inn. It was too dark and the food was not as good as we get in Texas. We live in the DFW area so we have Mexican rest. everywhere. The flan was good at San Angel which is why I reserved it because that is my husbands favorite dessert.

Thanks for all your responses but I think we are going to give it a try...DH loves the atmosphere there and since we have never had Tex Mex just local Mexican restaurants by us, we have nothing to compare it to....will let you know how we did or didnt like it come Oct!

The last time I ate there was a number of years ago- around 4- and although I don't remember the food as being anything absolutely amazing, I also don't remember it as anything awful either. I think it was just generic decent Mexican.

The thing I love about the place is the ambiance. I love the volcano, and the boat riders going by, and the "stars" in the ceiling- it's all very magical to me. Mom and I are totally planning on eating there when we go this summer just for the atmosphere. Ok, and the margaritas.

I say go for it... if you go in with the right attitude ("this is not going to be the best meal of my life and I'm in a crowded theme park") then you can have fun with it. No restaurant on here seems to ever get all high marks. Do what makes you happy and don't stress about it!

We actually prefer LUNCH to dinner :thumbsup2 (Plus if you aren't super hungry, have a cocktail and some munchies and "eat" later somewhere else for dinner!)

We are going to try lunch in July. I'll keep you in mind and let you know how it went. I think the lunch menu looked more like what we are used to.

We're also going to try this spot during our Christmas trip. We stopped in last year and it is beautiful with the Christmas decorations. Is there anywhere special we should try to sit? Thanks!
