Considering Mickey's Backyard BBQ as our arrival day meal/activity instead of going to a park on arrival day. For anyone that has done this, can you give some info and your thoughts on it? These are the questions I have in mind:

Is the food good?

What characters are there and is the character interaction good?

Can you get photos with the characters?

Is it considered a dinner show? Does it require 2 TS credits?

Would it be too hard to get there from AS Music?

I know this is a lot of questions; but this is one meal I don't see many posts about on the boards.

thank you! ;)

The food is filling, but no great shakes. The kids will probably enjoy it. It is a good time for kids, but myself and DW mostly endured it for the young-uns. :thumbsup2

I'd much rather do HDDR myself, since it take 2TS credits for either.

Here is a menu for it.

We went to the Backyard BBQ for the first time on our trip this December. DD loved it! The character interaction is a little like a free for all....it is more like a "dance party" than the traditional meet and greet. You can get pics but characters do not stop interacting with the kids to pose for pics. There are no autographs either. My DD loved this so much because she loves to dance!

It does take 2 credits for this one. The food was pretty good...nothing too spectacular but lots of it and filling. DH's favorite was that you good eat as many Mickey ice cream bars as you possibly could!:rotfl: There was also beer and wine as well as tea and lemonade.

The characters that were there were Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Chip and Dale. There is also and band and two Emcees that lead the show. A roping show was also included...which was really cool. He did all sorts of lasso tricks!

I am not sure the best way to get to the BBQ from ASMu. I would suggest taking a bus over to the Magic Kingdom and then a boat over to Fort Wilderness. If you have a vehicle, you could drive to FW and then take the internal bus system to the area where the BBQ is held.

Hope this helps! Have a good time!!

Ditto SCDISFAN, almost.

The only area I would disagree is that the food was not great at all. DD7 loved it. DS 11 and 14 hated it.

Is the food good?

It was ok....hambergers, hot dogs, beans and other picnic/BBQ food Plus there is beer and wine

What characters are there and is the character interaction good?

Hard to say as we did this back a few years when the characters interacted and danced with the kids, the trip after that one we went to schedule it and they said that the characters stayed on the stage

Can you get photos with the characters?

see above

Is it considered a dinner show? Does it require 2 TS credits?

It is a dinner show and does require 2TS. They also will ask to put a hold on your CC

Would it be too hard to get there from AS Music?

No, but not exactly 'easy' either. We took a bus to MK then took the boat over the Ft W and walked to where we needed to go. The kids enjoyed ot boat ride

I also wanted to add we did this on our 1st night and thought it was a great way, after 16 hours in a car, for the kids to blow off steam. If they were loud or couldn't sit still we thought it would be fine...and it was!!! ALthough the kids behaved!

We went in July and would NOT do it again. Very hot and very crowded. It is in an open air area. There are fans but they did not help with the heat at all. When the characters come out it is a mad dash to get near the one you want. Very difficult to manage with the crowds and the heat. I kept losing my five year old in the crazy crowd.

The food was fine. regular BBQ stuff. The corn bread was good. Although I heard lots of people complaining that for all that money no flies on the food would be expected. They had ice cream mickey ears and fruit pops but it was so hot that they melted way too quick.

The show was okay. Nothing special to us.

Now we went with a large party of friends that had been before and LOVED it the first time they went and HATED this time. They said the time of year made all the difference. The first time they went was in October and they said the heat made it too difficult to enjoy.

One side note: You have to get there AT LEAST an hour before it starts if you want a good table. Seating is first come first serve. We got there one hour before and we were third on line. Thirty minutes before the line was very long. To their credit, they CM brought out drinks to the line because it was so hot.

I never wanted to go because of all the draw backs that I knew about. We went because that is where our friends wanted to go and were only had one chance to see them on the trip. DH thought it would be great to see them and that would be enough. But it was difficult to enjoy our time with them again because of the heat and crowds. It is noisy too. So I guess my thoughts on not going were right. Oh well. Now DH knows to listen to me (ha, ha)!

We love the HDDR for all the reasons we did not like MBTB. Inside with air, assigned seating so no need to arrive early, great show, and good food!

JMO ;)

Oh I forgot, we did get pics with Chip & Dale. Mickey was in a crowd of people so he was a no. I have a pic of my son sort of near him but no direct pics. They also had a line for people to take pics with Minnie and Mickey at one point. But that line was really long.

I like regular character meals where the characters come to you and no lines are required. When we go to Disney we encounter enough lines. We don't need them while paying lots of money or using 2 credits.

Again, JMO. Sorry for the bad review

all the negative reasons listed here are what has kept us away on all of our august trips... but we will be visiting in january and i just tried to book this meal online and it's saying not available... does anyone know if it is seasonal?

thank you everyone for your honest feedback. I think we will pass this. I can't imagine paying that much oop for what my kids would think is a character meal and not really get to interact with the characters without a hassle. Also, we are planning on going in late August, so since this is outdoors and we would probably need to schedule an afternoon slot, the picnic area where the meal is held may be wet and muddy from the August afternoon rainstorms. We will probably just do DTD on our arrival day. Thanks :thumbsup2

I think it is seasonal and it's not offered everyday like the HDDR.

Not interested in the HDDR?

Also, you can always hop on a boat the the CR and go to Chef Mickey...Very quick and easy...CM has great character interaction if that is what you are looking for.

Good suggestion!! HDDR is great and so is Chef Mickey's..and only 1 TS opposed to 2.
