Tell Me about Horror Nights

It's a great time to go, you'll get to see Halloween AND Christmas…mostly Christmas, though. They switched over on 11/2 this past year. I was stunned how quickly it happened.
My birthday is 11/1 and as much as I love Halloween I think it’ll be so cool to see both. Plus it’ll be our first run Disney event.

Happy Birthday! Great way to spend it :-)
I begged dh to go last year at that time but we were waiting to see if I would get a full time teaching job. The school I love doesn’t think they will have an opening next school year so we should be in the clear.

See, I don't like that you go through the houses in a conga line. You always know a scare is coming up because you saw the reactions ahead of you. I personally felt that all the houses were underwhelming and you pretty much had to buy express pass to see them all. What I did like was the themed zones that are just out int he park. They are very nicely done!

OP, if you don't like haunted houses with jump scares (such as they are), then I wouldn't go for HHN. It kinda becomes a large "bar scene" too and wasn't quite my cup of tea. MNSSHP is more my style.

Lots of the scares are staggered - ghost jumps out from the left at the person 4 ppl ahead of you, and then when you get to the same place, BOOM a different ghost comes at *you* from the right. Some of the bigger scares do depend on timing, but most of the ones are staggered and unpredictable the first few runs fo the house.

They've also seemingly tried to tamper down the "bar scene" - reducing the options at the popup kiosks, no more shot girls walking around, etc.

Well, that is a good thing for sure. Like I said, it's been years since I went, but that was one aspect I didn't like.

Shot girls....?

Now that you mention it I didn't even notice their absence last year. They didn't bother me either way...I just go with the flow at HHN.

We will be there for a Thursday- Sunday in October (5th-8th), and I'm undecided about HHN. Will IOA still be open as a "regular" park those evenings? I would be upset to have nothing to do after 5pm or so (and it makes my multi-park ticket seem much less valuable).

Yes, IOA will be open as a regular park. It will be open later as UNIVERSAL will close at 5pm Weds thru Sunday during HHN.

If you don’t want to do HHN then just take the Hogwarts Express over to Hogsmeade and continue your fun at IOA.
