Tell me about Elk Hills/Bakersfield

Well dh received a job offer. We are still considering. It is based out of Bakersfield. Can anyone recommend a nice decent family area to purchase a house? We also have three kids going into grade 2, 8 and 10 so schools are a consideration also!! TIA
