Dh got a job opening notice ( NOT a sure thing just a notice of an opening that he is qualified for) we are trying to figure out if its something we would be interested in at all.

I know there are so many of you that live in the area. Can you tell me what you love and dont love about it?

Thanks! :)

Binny,

I've lived in the Chicago are my whole life. Outside of some day maybe living in Florida I can't think of any other place I'd rather live.

For those who love big cities - Chicago is one of the biggest and the best! Something for everyone from sports, to night life, to great theatre. Great shopping and a very wide range of food choices.

For those who love to get away from the city - Chicago has that too. From the individual neighborhoods in the city that have their own feel to the sprawling communities far from the city but still part of Chicagoland. I live in a village just North of the city and grew up in a village just West of the city. Both have a more relaxed feel than the city itself. Tree lined streets with large front lawns and a slightly slower way of life.

Chicago has two world class zoos in the area.

Chicago has a major league team in all sports as well as some wonderful minor league teams as well.

Hope that tells you a little something about this wonderful area. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to PM me.

Does your husband know what part of the area the job would be in. The Chicago area is so large that if you give an idea of the area you can get a better idea of that specific area.

Forgot to tell you about what I don't love - traffic, traffic, traffic. Can't complain too much as I work only 5 minutes from home :)

from Chicago and just went there today for a hotdog with my SO. We go and go often as we are so close. We LOVE the theater, we are season pass holders.....we love the sights, the smells (sometimes) and the hustle and bustle...we also love that we live 45 minutes away from the city. Trafic is a problem, but there is a lot of public transportion in and out of the city. We always drive in, but we could easily catch a train fro an hour commute each way. If you are really serious, pm me and I will send you a copy of the real estate section of the Chicago papers and the papers by our house, just so you could get an idea of cost of living and all that. Even if you get a job in the city, it does not mean you have to live there!!!!!! You definately have a lot of options as far as where to live as you can always find a way to the city.

Liz

Gino's East/Uno's/Lou Malnati's Pizza, Vienna Chicago hot dogs, Scala Italian beef and sausage combos, Eli's cheesecake, Portillo's Polish. That's the food.

I too have been here all my life, amost 60 years now. Chicago seems to have whatever one needs. A beautiful lakefront, great employment opportunities (the center of many industries), super transportation hub (awful traffic as said above). Good sized, large, but not New Yorkish (sorry NYC folks, I do like your city too :)). Wonderful entertainment, theater, sports, golf. And lots of DIS'ers, LOL, and meets.

Let us know when you are coming here for an inspection, we'll get a group together to tell you guys all about us.

LOL, Nick, or is it Cindy. Just adding with an edit here, I really am bad for these 'what's good about Chicago' or I'm coming to Chicago, what to do' threads, as I have been here all my life and most things I take for granted. Here are a few links I standardly put in these type of threads, they seem to help too.

Hi Binny,

I'll add a couple of things that haven't been mentioned. There are some very good school districts in the suburban Chicago area. Being you have little ones, this might be a consideration as to where you might want to live.

Another thing....there are wonderful museums in our area just for children. Kohl's in Wilmette, HealthWorld in South Barrington, DuPage Children's in Naperville, Children's Museum at Navy Pier. We spend a lot of time at them. Definately hands on for the younger crew. And, like Mary said, 2 wonderful zoos as well as all the fantastic museums in Chicago (Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science & Industry, Field Museum).

If you do end up looking to move out in this area, PM me if I can help.:D

I can't be of much help, because I live in Florida, but I visited Chicago in the summer of 2002 and LOVED it. If it weren't for the hassles of Wintertime (and the fact I already live near some of the greatest themeparks ever), I'd probably move there.

We visited northern Chicago, I believe (near the Sears Tower and Navy Pier), and the city was CLEAN and friendly. I must say, I was impressed. I now LOVE big cities! I thought I'd be uncomfortable being around so many strangers, but the place was just wonderful. We went on a boat ride at night at the Navy Pier and saw all the buildings lit up...truly beautiful.

I am definitely going to make Chicago one of my regular vacation destinations when I'm older. :)

I too, have lived in the Chicago area all my life and LOVE it! It seems like everyone else has covered all the highlights, so I won't repeat it. If you have an idea of which part of the Chicago area you are interested in , we can probably be of much more help. :D Don't hesitate to ask more questions--we're a friendly bunch!

Thanks everybody.

:)
He is applying for it, I dont know if he'll get it but we'll see. :)
