Tell Me About Boston Terriers

I am so thinking of getting a Boston Terrier. I have been reading up on the breed and found that they are supposed to make great family pets. I did read they are prone to respiratory issues.

We do have Shih Tzu he's a year old. He's very easy going w/ other dogs but can be "snippy" w/ some humans he doesn't know.

We are home often- or take our dog w/ us and would continue to do so if we get another. Shih Tzu's are notorious for being extremely difficult to potty train. I couldn't find any info 1 way or another on Boston Terriers in regards to trainning. I know I'd consider my dog now about 98% housebroke. Sometimes he'll have an "accident' for no reason what-so-ever. Also, everything I read says the Boston Terrier has a great disposition and is great for families. Do they have the hyperness that some terriers are known for? Not the puppy hypers- but as an adult- are they real restless like certain terrier breeds? I'd appreciate any info. Thanks.

We have a 16 month old Boston and have had others over the years. Our dog is very smart and he has adpoted us into his pack. Super easy to train and stays in the cage from 6:30 until about 4 with only one problem in the time we've had him. We love ours and I'm sure you will too!

Can I ask- what is the shedding like? I know they're going to shed. As opposed to the dog I have now- which doesn't. I've been throwing this around for the last few months. However, I needed to wait until the breeder I was recommended to had pups. Which they do now and will be ready right before Christmas. The breeder normally doesn't adopt them until after the holidays (she doesn't want the pups as Christmas gifts). However, my aunt (who is a former Champion lines Springer Spaniel breeder) is excellent friends w/ the breeder. We are a very "dog" oriented family (we have quite a few professional handlers in our family that have made it as far as the Westminster Dog Show). The breeder knows this and is willing to make an exception. The biggest thing- is nobody in the family has been into the Boston Terriers and really couldn't give me any insight.

Oh goody! My favorite subject! I have two Bostons right now and had another that we lost about 3 years ago. They are the best dogs. I hope to never have to live without at least 1. They are very smart dogs. That makes them a bit on the more difficult side to train because they are stubborn and have minds of their own. Now, don't let that discourage you. All it takes is consistency. We had Missy trained within a month, Oreo was easy because she followed Missy around. Coral was a bit tricky because she was too little to fit out the doggy door. She would get hung up! :rotfl: She was probably the hardest of the three. She's great now. They do shed. It's not a horrible mess though. If you wear white, their black hairs shed and if you wear black, they shed their white hairs. It's a neat trick they do. We don't worry about it. As for their breathing, yes they have some problems. They snore and snort. They can't be in extreme temperatures because of this. They are definately indoor dogs and will stick to you like glue. They are also funny! We laugh all the time at things they do. I just love my girls so much and would be happy to answer any more questions. You should definately consider these dogs!

Is staying caged this long pretty common for most working people who own dogs? :confused3 I don't work so I've never really stopped to think about it.

My MinPin stays caged from about 7am till about 2:30pm when DS15 gets home from school.

My current dog stays crated for about 6 hours- twice a week- when I work. I feel that it's only twice a week- and he's fine. He goes in his crate on his own all the time to sleep. I've gotten to the point I don't even lock the door at night because he sleeps the entire night anyhow. He goes most everywhere else w/ us.
It would be an indoor dog anyhow. Other than walks and playing in the park.

I was very concerned about keeping him in the cage all day, but he seems to really like it. He goes there in the evening to lie down and we don't even have to lock the door - he won't try to get out! In the morning, I just tell him to go to his room and he usually goes right in.

They are really a great breed, love to play, love people and are very smart.

We got our Boston, Mason (see picture below) about 4 months ago. At first I was a little worried because we have cats and no dogs, but it has been great. Yes he know how to push the cats buttons, but Mason has been so much fun. Granted the first 3 weeks of having to go outside every 2 hours wasn't fun. But we love hime so much we can't wait to get another. Boston's really are wonderful dogs. I recommend them to any family.

Just wanted to say I had two Boston Terriers when I was a child and both were wonderful companions. They are so loveable! :goodvibes
