morning all-:surfweb:
just saw in my local paper that Aldi's is coming to my area-what is this place like? Are the deals any good? I usually shop @ Shop-Rite so if this place has good deals I might use them to supplement/stock my pantry
Trish

We are getting one also..:woohoo: Do you happen to be in Morris County?

I used to shop at one in West Virginia a few years ago when my mom lived there. I loved it.

I'm not familiar with Shop Rite, but I shop at Aldi frequently. I'll give you the highlights of the store:

--One choice for an item, (ie. one peanut butter, one syrup, one cream cheese), etc. Saves time on shopping.

--No brand name items unless they are running some sort of special

--bag your own groceries

--pay a quarter for your cart, get your quarter back when you return cart

--discounted prices on all their items, so you are able to cut your grocery bill

--don't take coupons, as they usually don't carry name brand items.

With the exception of lunchmeat or most other fresh meats I get a large portion of my groceries at Aldi. I have found their products to be of good quality & they have good prices. It's worth checking it out to decide if you like it or not.

We have an ALDI's near us. We are ShopRite shoppers too.
It has a mini warehouse look to it. There are no bags. You have to pick up boxes along the aisles or bring your own. A good percentage of the food are no name brands. Once in awhile it might get a name brand in at a discount.
You also have to have a quarter to rent the carts and it gets returned when you put the cart back where it belongs.
We have found that we didn't like the taste of some things and yet enjoyed others. I think you will just have to find out for yourself by trial and error.

yes I live in Randolph and the Daily Record had an ad yesterday looking to hire cashiers($12/hr) for their new Rockaway store
I heard others talk about this place but have never been to one
BTW- also heard a pretty accurate rumor that Trader Joe's is also coming closer to us also -I love TJ's but hate traveling to Florham Park

I love aldi's - bring your own bags or boxes and a quarter for the cart. I pay $2.29 for gallon of milk there when it's a dollar more at other stores. $1.55 for eggs when $1.99 elsewhere. A box of 4 6 oz. filet mignons (frozen) for $6.99 and a 3 lb. bag of frozen boneless/skinless chicken breast for $5.49. Those are some of my fave buys but cheese and bread are also a lot cheaper.

wohoo a trader joes.any idea where? I used to go to the one in Florham Park years ago when I worked down that way.

I am in Dover. Yeah, Aldi's is going to be behind the new Walgreens across from McDonalds. That whole intersection is already becoming a nightmare.

Aldi's is a good place to stock up on staples, and things you use a lot of. There are no name brands, but the food is nearly identical to what you would get at Pick n' Save, Sentry, etc. There is a meat case, but we buy our meats at Pick n' Save.

Our Aldi only takes cash, unless they've changed it. I am not impressed with the place. I frequently buy Kroger brand so I am not a brand snob, but some of the canned goods are just not good. I have had seed pieces in several cans of peaches and apricots. The green beans had stems and tasted off, I found a little stone in the yogurt. I still mostly with the fresh produce and fruit when I go.

I love Aldi. I'd buy everything there if I could. Because of some dietary issues, we don't buy food with artificials in them. But I do buy most of the basics there. Our store is in a nice part of town and it is very clean. If you do shop there, keep your receipts until you have tried the items you have purchased. If you are not completely satisfied they will give you double your money back. At our store you have to have the origional container and receipt. It is a store that can really help your budget. Also, they accept cash, food stamps and debit cards. No checks or credit cards.

I've been making sure I go to Aldi's now for the basics because I do see a big difference in my grocery spending. There are a few things there that we've tried and don't like, but we run into that at Cub Foods, too. Milk is $1 a gallon cheaper, eggs are 80 cents cheaper, fresh fruits and veggies are alot cheaper.

Like others said, it's a no frills store. You can take your own bags/boxes, or buy bags there, and/or pick up empty boxes throughout the store as you see them. The lines sometimes look really long, but the checkers are really quick. I can remember Aldi's before they had the scanners.....they had all the prices MEMORIZED and had to punch them in manually.

I'd definately try them out.

I buy cerial there for the kids. I noticed when baking at Christmas time that all of the baking supplies were almost 50% less than the regular store and that was for things like brand name choc. chips, sweetened condensed milk, coconut flakes and such.

Fruits and vegetables are much less.

I sometimes even let the kids get some snacks there....they have inexpensive rice cakes that are their own brand.

I don't care for the canned vegetables. Most are full of salt and sugar and they don't have canned friut without heavy syrup.

I absolutly love their boneless/ skinless frozen chicken breast/ tenderloins! My ex-boyfriend was kinda a food snob, so I never told him where I got them from until one day when we were out, and he grabbed a bag from Super Walmart. He took one bite of the chicken he bought and said - "this isn't the chicken you normally buy is it? this stuff is gross!" - so I had to fess up on where I bought our chicken from. He was quite suprised. He went with me a couple times - but just couldn't "handle it". :rotfl: Which I find completly hilarious since his mother shops at food 4 less, (and of course Mama is ALWAYS right) which I see as on the same level as Aldi's!
Give it a shot - like other posters said - their baking products are a lot cheaper than regular grocery stores. And the brownie mix is the best!

Shopping at aldi's has cut my grocery bill quite a bit, on everything but fresh meats. they have a very cheap frozen section, like waffles, chicken nuggets, french fries, ect. it is a quick grocery store shopping, because there are no choices. you go there with your list, and grab the one option they have available. you will save money with their generic cereal. the kids don't notice the difference, but they are all under 2.00 a box. bring bags from home. i was never a fan of packing a boxand I am sure everyone on here has those annoying plastic bags lying around.

Everyone on here loves it.

I went once. NEVER AGAIN. Dirty and disorganized...... I don't want to shop at Dirty stores!

CarolA,
They are disorganized, but after a while you figure out where everything is. I will say that stores vary in cleanliness. I like to shop at a new one right by my house. The manager is always on top of staying clean

NJersyians. Check out your Aldi's carefully. There was a rumor (last summer) of them being sued by the state and FDA for selling below grade meats and produce. Evidently there were many complaints of bad meats and the NJ state attorny generals office was investigating. I did not follow the report because the one in Somerdale is horrible, so I stay away from them. I don't know if they are independantly owned so you may have better quality at different Aldi's
Personally I find I do just as well or better price wise with the shoprite generic brand, weekly specials and coupons.

I love our Aldi. Clean. Wonderful staff. Great prices.

As one with a family member in the food industry, generics/store brands are generally made by some brand name company or another. Last I heard, Del Monte was their canned fruit and veggie supplier and Malt O Meal makes at least some of their cereals. You get an idea of who makes their store brands based on their "special purchase" items.

Consistently low prices on basics like flour, sugar, milk, eggs, oil, powdered milk.:thumbsup2

 Ours has great produce. Pretty good regular prices, but the weekly specials are great. I got one-pound cartons of strawberries there last week for $.99 each. (I just wish they had green leaf lettuce in addition to the iceberg and romaine.)

Ours takes debit cards in addition to cash (not credit).

BYOBags or you can collect the empty boxes as you shop or buy bags. Ours charges $.04 for paper and $.10 for a pretty good sized plastic one. (I've also just put my groceries in the trunk without bags.)

I keep a quarter in my car since I go to our Aldi's so often. The kids fight over turns to put the quarter in the lock.

I love it that they are adding more "Fit and Active" products with their regular line. (ie reduced fat generic wheat thins, snackwells, yogurt, etc.)

I'm posting without reading what others say ... I really can't stand my local Aldi's. I'm sure that some are nice, but mine is dirty and gross. I don't mind buying off-brands, but I find the Aldi brands to be even more "off" than my local "Roundy" brands. The meat is scary and the veggies are not fresh. I really don't save a whole lot of money when I shop there, and it's probably because I'm fairly fussy.

My DD *does* like the whole cart rental thing :).

Oh ... on the last Aldi thread I found out that Aldi's and Trader Joe's are owned by brothers of the same family! I *heart* Trader Joe's!

Oh, as it gets closer to opening day, keep an eye on store flyers you get in the mail. The last time one opened near us, they had a coupon in their ad for something like $10 off of a $30 purchase at that location only. We have one very close to us, but went to the other location's grand opening since we got two coupons. DH and I filled up two carts and checked out separately. (Great deal since it was at Thanksgiving time.)

I have heard different degrees of store quality at different locations, but ours is fantastic!
