Cold Case moves from 9:00 pm, and goes up against Brothers & Sisters -- but this is a procedural going up against family soap. Cold Case just barely made the cut this year. Brothers & Sisters was all over the map last year, but perhaps that's helped the show.

We've watched a few episodes of Cold Case in the past, but lost interest. I'm one of the folks unimpressed with all the fabricated angst in Brothers & Sisters. My wife still likes it, so we'll record it, and it'll probably eventually make it to the top of our Now Playing list.

Okay, so we've come to Saturday... last as you would expect it to be. Saturday has become a grand waste of time on television. There is nothing of interest here for my wife or I. Nothing at all. College football, reality shows, reruns. Ho hum.

I think I mentioned earlier how I felt that networks tend to let new shows go a bit longer if they own the show, while they're more likely to cancel a weak show if the show is not owned by the network. I did a quick check on that, and remarkably, among the new dramas on the big broadcast networks (including CW), the only ones that are not owned by the network broadcasting them are three on ABC: Eastwick, The Forgotten and V. All three are Warner Bros. productions.

The chart above includes both the most commonly-talked-about cable shows, being presented this fall, and the "second tier" -- other shows that, while not talked-about much, I have at least read a little about them in the industry press, so they're clearly getting some attention. But do folks really watch cable in the fall?

For us, it's typically about 15%. That's pretty-much the opposite of summer, as you can well imagine, where 85% of what we watch is cable.

For the last couple of years, we've toyed with the idea of ditching cable come the fall. We live 18 miles from the transmission towers on the Needham flats, with line-of-sight. While we don't necessarily have a good arrangement for placing our antenna (it has to receive signal through a solid wall), the few times I've deliberately recorded off the antenna instead of cable worked out fine -- just a few glitches here and there. So it does seem practical. We've found one reason or another not to, usually having to do with wanting to watch Mad Men through to its season finale.

We'll record Mad Men, Psych, Sanctuary, and Stargate Universe. We'll probably watch the first two and keep the first two for the winter lull.

Friday
8:00-9:00 pm
__________ABC: Supernanny [10/16]
__________CBS: Ghost Whisperer [9/25]
__________CW: Smallville [9/10]
__________Fox: Brothers [9/25] / 'Til Death [10/2]
__________NBC: Law & Order [9/25]
The big news, here, is the puzzling move of Smallville, perhaps one of CW's strongest programs, to what is arguably a lesser timeslot. By all rights, this should be CW's best chance to win a time period. If it doesn't, well that's really a clarion call for CW, and most likely the death-knell for Smallville. I think that's very likely, since Smallville is going up against programs all of which (except for the one new program) earned better ratings (in whatever timeslots they were in last year) than Smallville.

Supernanny moves an hour earlier, to 8:00 pm. Fox inserts new comedy Brothers and returning favorite 'Til Death, relocated here from Wednesday. In the "I can't believe they actually renewed it again" category comes NBC's Law & Order, also relocated here from Wednesday. And finally, the only incumbent program in this timeslot: Sappy, expensive veteran Ghost Whisperer, which actually improved in ratings last year. Is Ghost Whisperer's success attributable to never having had any serious competition? Could be...

Friday
9:00-10:00 pm
__________ABC: Ugly Betty [10/9]
__________CBS: Medium [9/25]
__________CW: America's Next Top Model (rerun)
__________Fox: Dollhouse [9/25]
__________NBC: Southland [9/25]
__________Syfy: Stargate Universe [10/2]
__________USA: Monk [summer]
Wow... busy timeslot. And I think perhaps a missed opportunity for NBC/Universal. FX presents their original dramas and comedies this fall weekdays at 10:00 pm. Why doesn't NBC/Universal do something like that? Instead of presenting three original programs at the same time on three of their networks (Southland, Stargate Universe, and Monk) along with the two programs NBC/Universal presents on cable, an hour later (Sanctuary, and Psych/White Collar), why not put the four cable shows on up against Leno, one each day of the week?

Anyway. Here's another timeslot with a set of transplants. Ugly Betty, after poor ratings last season, gets moved here from Thursday. Medium not only relocates here from Monday; it relocates from NBC to CBS. Southland relocates here from the ER timeslot on Thursday. Combined with Dollhouse's very surprising renewal, I think one thing we can conclude about Friday is that it is a special type of dumping ground. Not the abject dumping ground that Saturday is, but a more rarified dumping ground: A place where networks seem to be sending programs that they want to have lower expectations for, programs that they can keep alive despite lower ratings.

Friday
10:00-11:00 pm
__________ABC: 20/20 [9/11]
__________CBS: Numb3rs [9/25]
__________NBC: Jay Leno Show [9/13]
__________Syfy: Sanctuary [10/9]
__________USA: Psych [summer] / White Collar [10/23]
Okay, final timeslot. And quite frankly, Number3s is being pitched a softball. NBC has given up completely, and ABC presents a news magazine. After a really crappy season two years ago, Numb3rs came back strong last year (despite, quite frankly, the show getting so bad, story-wise, from our personal point-of-view, that we actually put off watching episodes until we ran out of other stuff).

Something else really interesting here is the premiere of White Collar in October. It isn't the first time that a cable network has put an original drama into the fall, but in the past it was mostly shows that established themselves over the summer or in the spring, trying to bring its audience into the fall. Now, there does seem to be a greater willingness on the part of cable networks to put even a new series in prime time during the fall.

Updated the first message in this thread with some cable networks' plans.

Added ION to the first message in this thread.

Updated the second message in this thread with more links to show-specific threads. Please let me know if others should be added.

What's happening to NBC: Law & Order: Criminal Intent? Is it no longer going to air on NBC? Only on the USA network?

Law & Order: Criminal Intent has completed the first run of its 8th season on USA; and is in the middle of a run of rebroadcasts on NBC. It will not be presented this fall; it has not yet been renewed for a 9th season on either USA or NBC.

Wow. That will be a big blow to the TV industry here in NYC, that depended on the jobs from that show for several years now. I don't care for the show, myself, (too plodding,) but I do care about keeping what shows we had in NYC going. :(

I noticed you didn't add the TNT or USA networks. I really like the show, In Plain Sight, which just had it's season finale a couple weeks ago, and won't be back till next spring some time. :( I also like Royal Pains, which is on Thurs at 10 pm. That should be ending it's season soon. Both were on USA. Dylan McDermot's show, Dark Blue, is on Wed at 10pm on TNT.

Will there no replacement series for them in the fall? I find I'm watching more & more cable series as shows like Desperate Housewives & Grey's Anatomy has jumped the shark.

All the cable network series that I know about are already reflected in the first message in this thread, except for one TNT series, Men of a Certain Age, which has not yet been scheduled.

USA will present the new series White Collar this fall. It's been listed on the first message in this thread for about a week I think.

Would there be room for a more general BBC America thread given the specials for Doctor Who (I would also be willing to set up an Offical Doctor Who verse thread as well).

Word on the street is that Mythbusters will have some new episodes this fall. More info to come.

When you've had a chance to review the blurbs all the new shows, please post your predictions, in addition to what you personally are interested in checking out.

Please follow just one rule for predictions: Please post your prediction only before the series you're making a prediction about premieres. (So for most shows, that's three weeks from now.)
1) Which shows will be big hits (and surely renewed for 2010-2011)?

2) Which shows, while not necessarily big hits, will be at least renewed for 2010-2011?

3) Which shows will be canceled before episode 13 is broadcast?

4) Which comedy and which drama will be the first canceled in their respective genre?

I'll probably ask folks to re-answer questions #1 - #3 sometime in October...

You'd think, having asked the question, I'd be really confident in my own answers. Nothing could be further from the truth. I haven't kept track of how well I've done, in this regard, but I suspect that my track record isn't necessarily that stellar. My wife and I do tend to resonate, with regard to dramas (only), with what the general public ends up liking, but that only ends up with us picking up series that I misjudged early on later. Some examples of this include Lie To Me and NCIS -- both shows that I didn't pick as winners, that we didn't even watch when the premiered, but that we ended up watching religiously afterward. And paralleling that, my wife and I have several times gotten really excited about a show, only to drop it pretty quickly, followed soon thereafter with a network cancellation (i.e., Harper Island, Dirty Sexy Money). And there are those cases where we're just totally off base (Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies). [What's interesting is that we tend to not end up in a situation not liking what the greatest number of Americans like. While we do not watch the very popular CSI or L&O shows (and I include Cold Case and Without a Trace in that group), it isn't because we don't like those shows -- we have liked the few episodes that we have seen. We just don't watch them for other reasons.]

So my safest prediction is that I'm going to be about 50% wrong with my predictions below. :)

1) Which shows will be big hits (and surely renewed for 2010-2011)?
I'm going to be optimistic here, and put Flash Forward on this list. There are so many reasons why this is a bold choice, but I think there are enough Lost fans who will check it out and if done well this could be as successful as Fringe was last year (and I consider that a big hit). The other show I'm going to put on this list is one I think is a no-brainer: NCIS: Los Angeles.

2) Which shows, while not necessarily big hits, will be at least renewed for 2010-2011?
As I go over the list, I'm a bit spooked. As much as I think there are a lot of good choices this year, I think that success might be much more random than quality. I'm going to put The Beautiful Life on this list, and The Good Wife. Because I need to be sure I get at least one correct, I'm going to list Stargate Universe here, but I think White Collar will also earn a renewal. Also, Melrose Place. And I'll go out on a limb, and list The Forgotten, but that's probably going to be wrong. For comedies, I'm going to guess that Modern Family will achieve a renewal.

3) Which shows will be canceled before episode 13 is broadcast?
My bold choice for this list is Eastwick. I'm also going to list "either" Trauma or Mercy (not sure which one). For comedies, I'm going to guess that The Middle is going to fail.

4) Which comedy and which drama will be the first canceled in their respective genre?
Drama: Again "either" Trauma or Mercy (not sure which one).
Comedy: The Middle.

Okay, now someone else roll the dice...
