*** Television, Fall 2009 ***

ABC ordered a third season of Wipeout for next summer on July 22. TNT ordered a third season of Leverage for next summer on August 27. (Six episodes of the second season will be broadcast this winter, even before that.)

Durham County premieres tonight on ION.

Bicker...do you know whats happening with Drop dead diva?....we started watching this during our WDW vacation in July and now watch from the internet every week (we are in the uK).

We LOVE it...I don't know how many are left in this season..or if it will be back..I hope so...:)

It isn't one of the shows I keep track of, but from what I can tell, it continues through mid-October, and has already been renewed for 2010.

Durham County

What I will be interested in seeing is whether ION broadcast this show widescreen or pillar-boxed. We do have ION in HD here, but I don't know if they have ever actually broadcast anything in HD. I'm pretty sure this series was produced in HD, so maybe it'll be broadcast in HD.
Strike One: No closed captioning! Hello! Are there no deaf people in Canada? That's usually enough to turn a television show into a reject for us, but we gave Durham County more of a chance.

Strike Two: How incredibly dull and depressing.

Strike Three: How incredibly pixelated! This is an OTA broadcast channel -- it is not compressed by Comcast; it is not 3-muxed. (It never even makes it to Comcast's HITS.)

And if that wasn't enough: I'm normally pretty tolerant of station identification bugs (overlays), but for some reason that orange dot that is part of the ION logo really bugged me.

Fail.

That is upsetting about Maura Tierney. I think she's a really talented actress and she seems like a genuinely nice person. I wish her all the best.

My Thursdays are going to be frustrating with all of these new shows. Flash Forward will be on opposite Vampire Diaries (which we watched and enjoyed tonight). I already have my heart set on Flash Forward and we are still on the darn waitlist for the DVR from Charter...ugh.

And then they are putting Community up against Fringe which is always a must-see for me.

Now DH tells me he wants to start watching Survivor this season again (we haven't watched the last 4 seasons I think). We do have 2 VCRs in the house still but life would be so much easier if Charter would just get on the ball with the DVR!!

That's very sad about Maura. I've loved her since she was on News Radio.

Premiere of Ghost Whisperer ... in Syndication (Syfy, Women's Entertainment, ION)
So the verdict here, in our house, is that Ghost Whisperer is worth watching. We missed it in first run, and really enjoyed the first episode, so we'll be recording as much of the rest as we can, and as our DVR can store. I suppose we might spend next summer filling in the gaps, via Netflix, as we have done in the past with X-Files, Alias, NCIS, and most recently Smallville.

Series Premiere of Durham County (in the US) (ION)
We rejected this show mostly on principle, i.e., that ION was not providing closed captioning for it. However, I think that this show might have gone over our heads, anyway: We just want to have some enjoyment, from television, and this show didn't seem like it was going to deliver that.

The twist with Jeri Ryan was excellent. We're really jazzed to see this show return in January.

Series Premiere of Vampire Diaries (CW)
Good enough to watch, but not good enough to make a point of watching. Just to give you some idea where this show ranks in our estimation:

Our plan was to stop watching after Episode 2 because after that it'll be on against Bones and Flash Forward. Now, Flash Forward is going to be rebroadcast on Friday for at least the first two weeks. Doesn't matter to my wife and I; we're still going to record Flash Forward on Thursday (thereby bumping Vampire Diaries) "just in case" there is a problem with the Thursday recording of Flash Forward we have the Friday broadcast to make up for the problem.

So essentially, Vampire Diaries is worth watching, but not as much as having a backup plan for recording Flash Forward, a show we haven't even seen yet.

So the fall television season begins officially tomorrow. Finally! We've been looking at the bottom of the barrel here for weeks, so it'll be nice to have a good amount of great new stuff to watch.

We've been working our way though the take-down of SD-6 from Alias's first and second season. I think we have three hours left, so we'll just barely finish that off before the fall season starts backlogging.

I've been doing my back of the napkin computations again, and it doesn't look to me that we'll be watching many of the new series, even if we do record them. Between lots of new responsibilities and time commitments at church, I figure we'll barely be able to keep up with the returning series. So essentially, all the new shows (except for NCIS: Los Angeles and FlashForward) go into storage. And, of course, if they're killed early, we'll probably never watch them. Convenient.

Going back to the back of the napkin... even with all that, we're still going to run out of room on the DVR in November. Hmph.

That's very sad about Maura. I've loved her since she was on News Radio.
What do you think about the idea of having Parenthood built up around Helen Hunt instead? That's the word on the street -- that that's almost a done-deal already.

I think it's a pretty good idea. Helen Hunt's been gone from television for a while, and I think this could be a great way for her to make a return. And I think her movie career has been kind-of iffy since Pay It Forward and What Women Want.
