even when you are on the do not call list, AND you tell them to stop calling....

My buddy and I are talking about this and he says he has a company that calls him every single week. He has told them not to call. He is on the DNC list. And he actually reported the company ( no response yet )....

So, he has taken to keeping a police whistle near his phone... Even though I absolutely LOVE the idea, I told him I wouldn't do it... What "if" the person on the other end actually had their hearing damaged? I thought "maybe" he might be liable. He hasn't used it yet, but said he will if they call again.

Do you think he would be liable? I'm guessing "no", but I wouldn't bet on it.

Ooh, I don't know about that; it sounds like it could be dangerous to me. On older phones, you used to be able to hold down a key and it would beep continuously until you let the button up, which could be a possible alternative. My boyfriend and I used to beeeep each other when we got tired of what the other was talking about or as a teasing kinda thing. Stupid, but it made us laugh.

This would not happen to be Dishnetwork, would it? If so, tell your friend to google Dishnetwork illegal telemarketing to see that he is not alone--not by a long shot. I recently went through this with them and would be happy to share how I handled it.

It makes me crazy to get telemarketing calls. I figure if I want your services, I'll find you. (We need a foot stomping smilie!)

No, it is a company that wants to redesign his website.

I don't know if I would do that or not, but I may try something else. One thing that sometimes works is to ask the telemarketer if she would mind holding on for a sec......then just walk away from the phone. Or say to the person I am kind of busy right now, but if you give me your name and your number I will call you back when YOU are eating dinner with YOUR family (or something similar).....that usually gets them off the line quickly.

Here's what we do:

(1) Say, "Oh, yeah, hold on a minute" then set the phone down and play obnoxious music until they hang up.

(2) Say, "Um, you just called me yesterday and I signed up. What? You have no record of that? What kind of company are you? I'm notifying my credit card company right now!"

(3) Say, "I'd love to do that, but I don't believe in it (whatever it is -- cell phones, having your web site upgraded, satellite TV -- whatever it is, I claim not to believe that the technology is possible, that no one has proven it to me scientifically, and I have yet to have anyone try to explain to me exactly how "voices can travel over the air without a line, like traditional phones.")

(4) Say, "I have to check with my cat. You have to understand, my cat is a Methodist." (This answer isn't meant to be offensive to Methodists. It's meant to make a statement so illogical, there's no way to respond to it logically. Anything along these lines will do. "The voices told me to consult the Great Pumpkin before I make any commitments." "The nearest fire hydrant to my house is a half-block away and I have to move the light post before I can do anything else.")

The important thing is to have fun. :)

Is there any chance he has ever done business with them? I was in a DVD club years ago and still get calls from Columbia House occasionally. Maybe they are a company not required to follow the DNC list?

I was hammered and I mean pounded with calls from people running during the election yesterday.. Tom Ridge called me 4 times. I feel speical.. are they exempt?? By noon I had already got 8 "unknown caller" I usually dont answer but they woudn't let up by then I was worried it was someone I knew.. they would hang up call back hang up call back 5 min. later.. finally i decided to answer.. driving me crazy!!!!!

You know, I like these so much...especially number 4. I think I'll start using this...."I have to check with my psychic. I do nothing without the advice of Lady Zolt and her magic 8 ball"....is that okay with you? am I using your name in vain, or anything?

LOL! Go for it! :cool1: You know, I might use that one myself. After all, none of the telemarketers even know I'm LadyZolt. LOL!! :rotfl2:

Politicians ARE EXEMPT.

I give the phone to my kids with the instructions not to be nasty and don't say yes to anything other than that I let my children talk to them. they have done it since they can talk.:woohoo: :rotfl:

I guess we've been lucky. We had one company that kept calling after we got on the list. On about the 5th call, I said, "This is the 5th time in 3 days that you have called. I am on the National Do Not Call list. If you call one more time, I will file a harrassment complaint!" They stammered, apologized, and never called again! :thumbsup2

I report every single call I get to the donotcall.gov website. If people on the list don't report infractions, telemarketers will keep trying. It is a 10K per instance fine if they actually break the rule, so if everyone filled out the 2 or 3 questions on the website, it really might make a postivie impact for everyone.

and I tell them that I have filed complaints if they happen to call back again...you can also check out..whocalledus.com...lots of those strange #'s that call you are listed on there and you can sometimes find out the name of the company that called

Between never ever ever giving out my phone number (when cashiers ask, I just say it's unlisted), having my number on the DNC list, and having my number unpublished by the phone company (which is different from having it unlisted, it means they can't sell your number or in anyway give it out) I actually no telemarketing calls. The only ones I get are from companies I do buisness with (who are exempt). For those few, I have caller ID and once I see that toll free number on the name display, I just turn on my fax machine!!! Since I've started to do that, I've noticed even those calls don't happen much anymore.

I was getting sales calls every day from AOL. Telling them no didn't help, nor did telling them I had cable internet stop them from calling. I tried not answering, and they would call a little later. Finally, I answered the phone and when they asked for me I told them they had the wrong number. They apologized and haven't called since!

A lot of telemarketers call at my office, but we are a government entity, so I let them say their whole spiel, then drop that we are part of the government. I told my mother in law that I do this, and she now says that she is with the government (even though their co. isnt)

But what is funny is that being part of the gov. doesn't exclude you from purchasing services, I guess the callers just think it is and they say sorry and hang up!
