Teething troubles

and we leave in 3 days.

DD (4 mos) has been a bear these past few days. She's getting all upset when I try to give her a bottle..literally screaming. I have to massage her gums, have her chew on a cold cloth or give her tylenol just to get her to eat.

She's drooling like a faucet, she just keeps gnawing on anything that gets near her mouth...even her poor little fingers which causes more screaming.

Any suggestions? My first DD might have been a little cranky but nothing like this.

And how long will it last?? I'm not seeing anything poking thru yet.

Maybe a quick trip to the Pediatrician to rule out any ear troubles, a few months back we thought my youngest was teething and she was just miserable took her to the Dr. for some reassurance it was her teeth, turned out she had fluid in her ears and alot of pressure so she was just plain miserable.

I agree. A lot of things get blamed on teething when something else might be going on. At home i might ride it out but going to WDW, i would just get her peeped at.

ITA. A month ago DD was absolutely miserable for two days. I thought she was teething but something told me there was more to it. Finally, I tried to nurse her and she screamed and refused. I called the Dr and she had a double ear infection. I would call the Dr, especially if you're flying. You don't want to do damage to the ears. Good luck....

Thanks. I agree. We are seeing him tomorrow anyway for my other DDs 4 year appt. I was going to have him give me an opinion on the baby and check out her ears.

She doesn't have any cold symptoms nor any fever..

The way she's acting I'd be very surprised if it was something other than teeth..but I've been surprised before ;)

If it is teething, I recommend using Hyland's teething tablets. You can buy them a the grocery or drug store, and they're homeopathic. They instantly melt in the babies mouth. They're the only thing that helped my daughter. Here's the link about them:

Once you're sure it is teething, here's my favorite remedy:

Hit the supermarket freezer section and pick up some frozen mini-bagels. (Lenders makes some, although there are also some genrics.) Thaw enough so that you can separate the halves, then re-freeze.

They make GREAT teethers!! They're cold, taste much better than plastic, and eventually become a nice soft gooey bagel. One $2 package gives you 24 halves.

Best wishes, and enjoy your trip!

I know how you feel....DD didn't have any symptoms either...no fever, stuffy nose or anything...she was just miserable....I hope your little one is fine for your trip :)

This may not be the answer for everyone, but my daughter LOVES her little vibrating teether. I think we got it at Walmart. It is a little star shaped toy with a handle and it vibrates when she bites down on it. It seems to be more soothing than her frozen teethers...but causes even more drooling.

Yeah, we got the same one at WalMart. Our son didn't really chew on it much when he was teething, but he'd pinch it to make it vibrate and giggle at it, or he'd wedge it under his foot and just zone out. I think he put it under his head once, too. (Yes, I have a very strange little boy, lol) Hey, anything that distracts him from teething, right? :thumbsup2

That sounds really cool. I'll have to check it out. I did try the bagel with my oldest DD but this one hasn't had the okay for real food yet..so I'm not sure if I can do that.

So Ped says ears look great...he thinks teeth too. I'm glad I got it check out though.

I pray those teeth poke thru soon!!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I remember them! I used them with my older DD. Jeezz its amazing what you forget in just a few years.

I'll pick some up for the trip.

You might want to call your Dr and just check to see if the bagels are ok, since they're "real food". You could also try refrigerated baby carrots, but be sure to keep an eye out for worn spots so nothing breaks off. I'm trying to think of what we used for our kids....

Orajel doesn't last very long. Some people recommend rubbing a drop of whiskey on the gums, but I'm not too sure about that one. That's probably from before it was recommended not to give infants or children alcohol.

I can't remember, can you give infants Ibuprophen? I know you can't give them aspirin. If Tylenol is all you can give, then it would be a good idea to keep on time with doses.

I'm glad it wasn't an ear infection, and hope you all have a great time on your trip! :)

Homeopathics worked beautifully..DS teethed heavily from before 4 months, but we never needed to give him anything with side-effects.

Now, the Hyland's don't always work, b/c homeopathy won't work if it isn't the correct remedy. Once we realized that, we would look at the strongest symptom, check it in a homeopathy book to find the best remedy (which was usually ONE part of Hyland's), and give him that ONE remedy. That always worked.

One time when I had no time, or maybe no Hyland's, or maybe I just wasn't thinking...he was teething and screaming and HUNGRY, but he didn't want to nurse and frankly I was scared to put my body between those gnashing gums, LOL. For no good reason I had a freezer stash of expressed milk, and I just pulled one of those "tubes" of milk (I was using the bags), snipped off a corner like a pastry bag, and let him suck on that. Gave him nourishment AND a nice icy treat. It started melting VERY fast, so soon I just plunked it into a bottle, and he had his very first bottle, of very very cold milk. Made BOTH of us happy.

Since you only mention a bottle, doesn't sound like you'd have a stash of expressed milk (unless are solely pumping which is amazing and I bow to you b/c that's crazy-hard!), BUT maybe, assuming, you're using formula, you could mix it with cold milk, or perhaps mix some up and make "ice cubes" of it to go into normally mixed up formula...would give the calories and comfort for the belly, as well as the nice cold on the gums.

That is a really neat idea with the expressed milk and thanks for the bow I did exclusively pump for DD (4) because she was a poor nurser.. and it was tough but not too bad... This one is on formula..she had a milk allergy + I had to be switched to medication for hypertension that wasn't conducive to breastfeeding so two strikes for us. She's currently on a crazy expensive hypoallergenic formula.

I'm definitely going to refer to her as my sensitive baby

Anyways I stocked up on anything CVS had to offer for teething..and hope for the best. She actually seems better today..we've got a trick to allow her to suck on her hands first then slip the bottle it..doesn't seem to bother her as much. :thumbsup2

So glad to hear it's not the ears!! That would have been miserable with a trip coming up....have a wonderful time in WDW....
