DS has not been eating as well for the past few days (in fact the daycare called to say they really can't get him to eat much at all) and he has definitely been more fussy than usual. I am thinking that he is teething pretty hard right now because he is so much more fierce about chewing on things, the drooling has increased and I think I feel a lump on his gums.

Does teething cause a lack of appetite and/or is it just painful to eat for them? Should I call the doctor's office?

Well, it's been awhile for us but I seem to remember them not eating as well. DD got an ear infection with each new tooth, but she'd have 3 pop through in 2 days. She always got them in "groups".
It wouldn't hurt to call in and just ask if it's common. You could also ask what the minimum he should eat is, before bringing him in.
BTW-Love his new picture!;)

My son didn't eat as much when he was teething, it is not uncommon. Two good things that helped us when DS was teething was giving him the hard end of a wedge of parmesan cheese or a piece of crusty bread. A lady I know here whose son is teething teethes on pickles, maybe it has something to do with the salt in the cheese and pickles that helps I don't know. All I know is it worked a lot better than Oregel.

The poor baby. i can't remeber hat teething was like, my son is 20 but I know that teething did cause disomfort but as far as not eating. I myself would call the doctor and just run it by the office, doesn't hurt to call. I hope he gets his teeth soon that are ready to pop out, tell him santa is coming soon. :D

It's definitely not uncommon for teething toddlers to not want to eat anything. He'll be fine, just keep offering him food (try things like frozen bagels for him to chew on) and he'll be ok. He'll likely make up for the lack of eating now during the periods of time when he's not hurting.

Hang in there -- teething is NOT fun (for him or you!)

Poor baby! Teething is just the worst. I would first check with the doctor to get his advice (he should always come first.)

If you haven't tried teething drops - go to your nearest GNC store and get their brand of teething drops. Worked ten times better than the OTC medicine for my daughter.

The last piece of advice, brace yourself - teething seems like it goes on forever. Now my "baby" is four. Next thing I know she will be losing her teeth......

Good luck and let us know what works for your beautiful DS!

My DD (now 14 months) got very cranky with the 1st few teeth. The first one came thru around 8 months, but she was grumpy for months before that. Her eating decreased a little and the doctor had warned me that may happen. We tried everything, and nothing worked real well, other than some infant tylenol to help her. Also, I bought one of those net things....its like a plastic handle, and you put food in the net on top of the handle (I forgot the name, but you can buy it at Babies R Us or Right Start)....anyway, you can put frozen fruits, or ice in it for him to chew on, and he won't get any chunks of food off. She loved that thing. Good luck.

becka-Teething is so painful for little ones! DD had started eating some baby food, but when those teeth started hurting she wanted nothing to do with having a spoon shoved in her mouth. And she became really clingy and wanted to BF all the time. She just needed lots of comfort time. She also chews on anything she can get her hands on.
She has been teething since she was 6-7 months. Now she is 16 months and just cut 5 teeth in the last month! Including 3 molars. She is dealing a lot better with it now.
We did use baby Oragel with her. Mostly at night. And give him anything cold to chew on!

Good Luck!

DD#2 had the most discomfort. My doctor gave me a prescription 'Orajel' for both the girls. I know a lot of doctors won't, but my doctor says there is no need to be in pain. Once I put this on DD#2 she would immediately ask for something to eat and she would sleep so much better.

Oh yes, I remember this from just a few short months ago. Definate decrease in appetite. Don't worry, he'll make up for it later, trust me! :)

My 20 month old now seems to be going through some night time thing. Crying and whining and up for usually 3-4 hours per night. Usually 1-5 ish AM! Talk about suffering... all of us suffer.

I hope you don't have to go through that! Ugh.

Your doc "may" suggest infant Tylenol or, mine suggested Motrin for infants. That really seemed to help. I didn't give it to him alot, but when he was really bad, not eating, not sleeping and with a fever... he took it... and it worked.

Good luck!!!

Some people swear by Hyland's Teething Tablets, a homeopathic remedy. I don't think they worked for my DD, but every child is different. I gave my DD "chewies" ... plastic rings filled with cold water to chew on and baby motrin.

I TRYED THE FROZEN BAGEL SUGGESTED, Dd CHOCKED SO BAD I HAD TO DO THE BABY HYMLICK!! It was the Scariest!! At least I had taken a class on how to do it!!

Forget ALL the food suggestion.

Call the Dr. to see what you can give him for pain. Then go to the store on the double to get the teething toys you can Freeze. The cold numbs there gums lessening the pain while giving them something SAFE to chew on!!
