Teens & winter coats

I don't regularly wear a winter coat either. I dress in layers and/or in high quality, insulating clothes.

I make sure my 14yo dd wears layers plus a stylish hat as an alternative to wearing a winter coat. She doesn't like bulky coats either.

I am 30 years removed from being a teen and I don't even own a winter coat (upstate NY). Never could see the sense in it. I go from my house (heated) to my car (heated) to work (heated) or a store (heated). Now am I am person who loves heat and hates the cold but it seems stupid to me to bundle up because I have to spen a minute to walk across a parking lot. My DW on the other hand will be in the car with a parka, hats and gloves. You don't sit in your house that way why would you dress that way any other time? My teens also don't wear coats much to their moms dismay.

My boys don't like wearing coats either. I have to fight my 12 yo all the time to wear a coat. He'd rather just wear a hoodie. :rolleyes1

LOL, I just posted about this in the "life choices" thread:

Funny story related to this. My DS has never wanted to wear a winter coat, not because of being cool or anything, but he's always had some sensory issues. We always made him wear one, but it got more difficult as he got older. One winter when he was 9 or 10, he became particularly difficult, and I wasn't there in the mornings to get him ready for school, so my mom would bundle him up best she could and send him on his way. This preacher saw him at the bus stop every day and talked to one of the mothers about maybe having a clothing drive for him. Fortunately, the mother was a friend of mine and explained to him that my son did, indeed, have winter coats but just refused to wear them.

I'll never forget that.

And at 14 he still won't wear a winter coat except in the most frigid of weather.

I bought him a jacket of his choosing last winter and he probably only wore it a handful of times when it was absolutely necessary.

My boys (9th & 10th grades) wear hoodies, but refuse to wear a winter coat to school. They said it won't fit in their lockers, and they aren't allowed to carry them from class to class.

My DS, a senior wears his North Face fleece to school. He carrys his books around all day and doesn't go to his locker, so he wears his coat all day. My kids have to walk the entire 3 blocks home, so they get a little cold.

My DD is such a skinny minny. She's been wearing her down coat to school for a while. She is always cold. She will not wear a hat or gloves either. I did buy this jacket for her for Christmas. http://www.rei.com/online/store/Pro...2&parent_category_rn=4501810&vcat=REI_ON_SALE

I hope she likes it. It is nice and light but has wind blocking. I have one and wear it all the time except in the bitter cold. It doesn't seem like it but it's really warm.

Oh, and as far as myself, yes I wear a winter coat when it's cold, light jacket other times.

I leave work fairly late at night and it's freezing! My steering wheel is also like a block of ice. I hate wearing gloves though.

Anyone else have problems getting their teens to wear coats? I've tried to explain to my DD that she can't make it through the winter on hoodies alone. We bought her a new coat last year. Though she picked it out, she won't be caught dead in it this year. She did pick one out from Hot Topic, but it looked like it would be more used for bondage than warmth. :confused3 Any solutions? What do you teens wear?
No just DH.

That's pretty much me too. Several years ago when I was much younger I had a boss who made me promise I would at least put a coat in the car in case it broke down, and I had to walk.

I often carry a coat or jacket to the car. Then it's too much trouble to take it in where ever I am going. I don't want to carry it around the mall or a grocery store. If I'm going to someone's home, I will probably forget to take it when I leave (done that more than a few times). If it's a movie or theatre there's no room for it in the seat.

Then I forget to take it out of the car. Next thing you know I have a van full of jackets, sweaters, and coats that have never been worn.

I did wear a coat when I lived in Pittsburgh and had to take the bus to work. I had to walk a couple of blocks and stand in the blizzard of the day waiting, so I would bundle up from head to toe.

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem. Guess I'll lay off & stop making an issue of it. When she gets cold enough she'll put one on. :)

I can't believe teens won't wear a coat because it "makes them look fat". Good grief. Let 'em freeze. They'll put the coat on when they need it.

I just don't like them. They are very bulky, and I tend to get too hot in them. It has nothing to do with making me look fat... :confused3

The locker issue is a real problem. The only time my son needs one right now is in the morning, but then he has to find time to get back to his locker in addition to the band room for his instrument - and still make the bus! He wears a sweatshirt or fleece.

I made him buy a new one that fits so he'll have something, but it will probably only be worn when we do something that is an outside activity like sledding, etc. I don't feel too bad since my younger son will wear it too.
