ANDERSON, Ind. In response to a police investigation into a fight between Anderson residents Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley that occurred while the couple was filming an episode of Teen Mom, MTV reports that the situation was monitored by on-scene staff to ensure the safety of both individuals.
Portwood and Shirley are both featured in the reality show, which follows the lives of young mothers who became pregnant as teenagers.
Portwood is one of four teenage mothers originally documented in the show 16 and Pregnant, which also aired on MTV.
Teen Mom is a spin-off of the show, and is in its second season on the network.
In Tuesdays episode, Portwood is shown hitting and punching Shirley seven times before kicking him in the back as he walks down a set of stairs.
Anderson police caught wind of the fight when they received two anonymous e-mails on Wednesday urging them to investigate Portwood for domestic violence.
On Wednesday, Lt. Paul Boulware of the Anderson Police Department confirmed that police have opened an investigation into the incident.
On Thursday, Sgt. William Casey of the Anderson Police Department added that Indianas Department of Child Services had been notified of the incident and the ensuing police investigation.
Casey said no charges have been filed.
Det. Mitch Carroll of the Anderson Police Department said the police have been called to the Portwood home in the 1800 block of Fletcher Street once before.
On April 10, police were called to the scene when Portwood began arguing with a neighbor. No police report was filed, he said, because the situation was diffused by police at the scene.
Police were not called when Portwood struck and kicked Shirley, as depicted in Tuesdays episode.
Melissa Baretto of MTV gave a brief statement about the incident. Our role in Teen Mom is to document how incredibly challenging and difficult being a teen parent is. In this particular instance, we monitored the situation to make sure no one was in imminent danger and that the child was not there.
Although the couples child, Leah, was present during a verbal argument, Baretto said Leah was not present when Portwood hit and kicked Shirley.
The Herald Bulletin requested an interview with Portwood and Shirley but MTV denied the request.
